This first image shows a natural form pendant light,it was inspired by a caterpillar’s cocoon

These images show some initial concept sketches for some natural formfurniture. The chair takes inspiration from the shape of a leaf andprovides a good level of back support whilst also taken the form intoconsideration. The bookcase takes inspiration from glass blowing in the wind.

Banksia pod inspired matching tableand chair. The table has a “lopsided”style to it with an overhanging tabletop, which is then counterbalanced bythe bulbous rear.

This table was my A level project, the brief was to designsomething that took abstract inspiration from nature tocreate a product. I chose to design a table that was heavilybased on a leaf and a Sycamore seed. I wanted to almostcreate an illusion of floating which is where the thin bentiron bar came into it as it was meant to be “invisible" sothat the focus was drawn to the splayed base and the tabletop. The top was made from reclaimed Elm as well as recycledglass that I fused.

Carbon fibre running bladeinspired with additional support

Rigid yet shock absorbing crutch featuringa “soft touch” handle to reduce wrist strain

Final concept to take forward

Page 14: Matthew Jones Portfolio

The O-Crutch is the final development. It includesa thin carbon fibre “O” to reduce vibrations feltby the user. The “O” also acts as a shock absorberto minimise the effect on the users joints and somaking the crutch much more comfortable to use overa longer period of time.

The foot of the crutchis a replaceable rubberfoot, located on a pivotto provide maximum gripas the crutch tiltsforward

The O-Crutch features 2semicircular shafts thatenables the foot topivot, as well asproviding additionalvibration and shockabsorption

The reasoning behind the logo was partly due to the colours used across myproduct range. The blues reminded me of water and rivers, however I feltthat including rivers in the brand name felt odd and so “FLO” came too mind. The “indi” part is because my range is designed for students, and so isabout being independent and individual. Out of “indiFLO” and “indeFLO” Ifelt that “indi” was the better option as using inde didn't seem to worktogether properly. The colour use within my products, blue and grey, isbecause I wanted something that stood out and was sleek.

Space saving corner toaster, to maximise kitchenspace whilst still giving optimum functionality. This toaster allows the user to toast either 1 or2 slices of bread at a time, with a split handleto activate 1 or both sides of the toaster.

Single slice toastie maker, cuts into four pieceswith its assisting handle. It has been designed to fit within the rest ofthe product range.

Slimline iron enables the user the iron the inside of sleeves, cuffs etc by allowing the hand to sit comfortably towards thefront of the iron. It also has a pop out handle, similar to thehandles on wheelie suitcases, So that the user can also use itlike a typical iron when ironing larger areas. Steam buttonlocated in ideal position for the thumb of the user, the on/offswitch is located on the top of the front piece, near where thehand would go.

Conventional style iron with a modern twist. The iron hasa one way flow refill tube so that water does not comeback out of the iron but allows it to easily flow inside, this is done using a flap that falls down under thepressure of the water and a spring keeps it in places sothat when the iron is tilted, the water does not comeback out of the nozzle.

Global interference checking between components. This is to determine whether any parts are interacting with each other that shouldn’t be.Components such as screws should interact withthe casing under the assumption that the threadswill engage.

Final render of the ergonimic plug. This has been designed to enable users, such as the elderly and arthritic,to easily remove the plug from the wallby allowing them to grip on with theirentire hand.
