Matthew 18:23-35
The Parable of the Forgiving King
"THEREFORE, THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS
LIKE…”
Psalm 9:7-8
“The LORD reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment. He will judge the world in righteousness…”
Revelation 20:11-12
Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth
and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the
throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according
to their deeds.
Romans 14:12
“So then each one of us will
give an account of himself to
God.”

“You wicked servant…”
“When we are unwilling to forgive, it is because we are protesting that we have the “right” not to be treated a certain way. An unwillingness to forgive is an indication of pride, not an inability to
forgive.”
Proverbs 16:5 Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; Assuredly, he will not be unpunished.
“Forgiveness should be unlimited. For in light of the immense sin God has forgiven each of us, a professing
Christian’s refusal to forgive a fellow believer who requests it (and
demonstrates a change of heart and action!) proves so callous that one can only conclude that such a person never
truly experienced Christ’s forgiveness in the first place.” Holman Bible Handbook
“BUT I CAN’T FORGIVE!”
1. Jesus has commanded us to forgive.
Mark 11:25-26 "Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything
against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your
transgressions. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven
forgive your transgressions.”
James 4:17
“Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.”
“BUT I CAN’T FORGIVE!”
2. Refusing to forgive is spiritual suicide.
“He who cannot forgive breaks the bridge over which he himself must pass.”
George Herbert
James 2:13 For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy
triumphs over judgment.
“The moment I start hating a man, I become his slave. He even controls my thoughts. I can’t escape his tyrannical
grasp on my mind. When the waiter serves me steak, it
might as well be stale bread and water. The man I hate will
not permit me to enjoy it.”S. I. McMillen in None of These Diseases
“BUT I CAN’T FORGIVE!”
3. God has and will enabled you to forgive.
Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted,
forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”
"But if you do not forgive”“Once our eyes have been
opened to see the enormity of our offence against God, the
injuries which others have done to us appear by comparison extremely trifling. If, on the
other hand, we have an exaggerated view of the
offences of others, it proves that we have minimized our
own.” John R. W. Stott
"But if you do not forgive”
“If we don’t forgive others, we are in fact denying and rejecting God’s forgiveness
of us.”
