What is Matter?

• Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

• It’s the “stuff” that makes up the universe.

• It can even be invisible, right?

Properties of Matter• Each specific substance has its own

properties.• Examples:

– Hardness– Texture– Shape– Temperature– Flammability– Color

Page 3: Matter Notes

Elements

• A substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means.

• Building blocks of matter.

• Made up of tiny particles called atoms.

• Represented by a one or two letter symbol.

Page 4: Matter Notes

Compounds• A substance made of two or more

elements chemically combined in a specific ratio.

• Shown by a formula.– H2O, NaCl

Page 5: Matter Notes

Mixtures

• Mixtures are made of two or more substances - elements, compounds, or both - that are together but not chemically combined.

• Substances keep their own properties.

• Not necessarily present in specific ratios.

Page 6: Matter Notes

Physical Changes

• A change in state between solid, liquid, or gas.

• Alters the appearance but not the substance itself.

Page 7: Matter Notes

Chemical Changes

• A change in matter that produces a new substance.

• Also called a chemical reaction.

• Made of same substances as original but rearranged in new combinations.
