Matter

As a matter of fact…What’s the matter?It doesn’t matter…

Matter-anything that has mass and takes up space.

More Matter

Glass of water Wood pile

Chemistry-study of the properties of matter and how matter changes.

Two kinds of properties

• Physical-pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance.

• Chemical-pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances.

Physical Property

More Physical Properties

Chemical Property

More Chemical Properties

Elements-pure substance that can’t be broken down anymore

More Elements

Atom-basic particle from which all elements are made

Molecules-atoms combine to form larger particles

Compound-pure substance made up of two or more elements chemically combined.

Mixture-two or more substances that are not chemically combined.

• Heterogeneous-you can see different parts (ex: salad or pizza)

• Homogeneous-you can’t see different parts (ex: sugar in lemonade, cake)

Heterogeneous Mixture

Homogeneous Mixture

Separating Mixtures

• Some things can be separated by magnetic attraction, filtration, distillation, and evaporation.
