Enbridge has interests in 13 wind farms—in Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Colorado and Texas—with a combined total capacity of 1,662 MW of electricity. Approximately one-third of that total is now in Quebec, which is the largest wind power market in Canada.

In January 2014, we announced Enbridge will invest approximately US$0.2 billion in the 110-MW Keechi Wind Project in Texas. Construction commenced in December 2013 and the project is expected to reach commissioning in 2015. Texas is the leader in wind energy generation in the United States both in terms of installed capacity and number of turbines, and this investment represents a natural extension for Enbridge’s growing U.S. renewable energy portfolio.

Wind-generated electricity is the fastest-growing sector of electricity generation in North America, as substantial technological advances, cost reductions, renewable portfolio standards and availability of long term power purchase agreements have enabled wind projects to become economically attractive investments. We expect future wind opportunities to come through the securement of construction-ready or operational projects, expansion of our existing operations and development of new greenfield projects throughout North America.

As one of three partners, through NextBridge Infrastructure, Enbridge is developing the new East-West Tie Line, a new power transmission line proposed for northwestern Ontario. The 430-kilometre, double circuit 230 kilovolt (kV) line will run between the Municipality of Shuniah (near Thunder Bay) and the community of Wawa, Ontario, and is expected to come into service in the first half of 2018. The Project is required to ensure the long-term reliability of the electricity supply in northwestern Ontario.

In August 2013, the Ontario Energy Board selected NextBridge Infrastructure to complete development work for the line. After development work is completed, the joint venture will submit an application to the regulator to build and operate the line. This application is projected to be submitted in January 2015.

NextBridge Infrastructure is a partnership between affiliates of NextEra Energy Canada, Enbridge Inc. and Borealis Infrastructure. Together the NextBridge partners are well-positioned to deliver transmission projects on-time and on-budget, bring additional resources and innovative ideas to transmission project development, construction and operations in Ontario and support competition in transmission to drive economic efficiency in Ontario’s transmission sector for the benefit of the Ontario electricity ratepayer.

In October 2008, Enbridge acquired the 190-megawatt (MW) Underwood and Cruickshank Windfarms. Located on the west coast of Lake Huron, in the Municipality of Kincardine, Ontario. The projects are jointly referred to as the Enbridge Ontario Wind Project. Owned by Enbridge Income Fund, Underwood and Cruickshank generate enough emissions-free energy to serve the needs of about 60,000 Canadian homes and save approximately 180,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, combined. Comprised of 115 Vestas, V-82 1.65 megawatt turbines, Underwood and Cruickshank deliver energy to the Ontario Power Authority under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

In March 2010, Enbridge acquired the 99-megawatt Greenwich Windfarm, located on the northern shore of Lake Superior, Ontario. The project generates enough emissions-free energy to serve the needs of about 34,000 average Canadian homes, saving approximately 107,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year. Constructed by Renewable Energy Systems Canada (RES Canada), the Greenwich Windfarm was completed in late 2011, and will deliver energy to the Ontario Power Authority under a Renewable Energy Supply (RES) III 20-year power purchase agreement.

Today we’re Canada’s largest solar and second largest wind power producer; and in the United States, we’re a growing renewable energy player with investments in wind, solar and geothermal. In coming years, we’ll grow our power generation capacity in a measured fashion with the objective of approximately doubling capacity by 2017.
