Matrix Applied TechnologiesFloating Suction Lines & Skimmers
Articulated lines
When tank height is greater than tank diameter, a single arm suction line will not reach maximum liquid level height. In this case, a two-arm or articulated suction line is required. See below. A similar articulated confi gura-tion can be used for skimmer lines.
Skimmers
These are designed to skim off a layer of hydrocarbon liquid fl oating on top of water. Essentially, a skimmer is designed to remove the top layer of a 2 phase liquid stored in a tank.
Line sizes are usually 3” or 4” although Matrix Applied Technologies can make them in larger sizes. The minimum line diameter is 3”. Pontoons are designed to fl oat on their centerline at the lowest S.G. tank product. The skimmer plate is located an adjustable distance below this.

Suction Line
Matrix Applied Technologies Level Indicator:
This consists of a cable connected to the suction line. This cable is connected to a weight running up and down guide rods on the outside of the tank shell to give visual indication that the suction line is operating correctly. It also gives a quick visual indication of the suction line position.
In the case of a fl oating roof, it is impossible to see if a fl oating suction line is operating correctly or not. It is a good idea, therefore, to fi t a level indicator when a suction line operates beneath a fl oating roof.
For level indicators beneath a steel fl oating roof, a ½” pipe is welded vertically into the pontoon and the cable passes through this to a pulley at the top corner of the tank. This arrangement can be seen in the roller type suction line illustration below.
For aluminium and stainless steel IFRs, a vertical cable guide pipe can be built into the IFR.

Matrix Applied Technologies SwingMaster joints are available in 3” to 44” diameters. 3” lines use a Matrix Applied Technologies drain joint.
Matrix Applied Technologies CAN HELP SOLVE YOUR TANK DESIGN and MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS
Both the Matrix Applied Technologies Heavy Duty Pontoon Aluminium Internal Floating Roof (IFR) and Full Contact fully welded Honeycomb panel IFR have been designed for long, maintenance free service.
Pontoon IFRs are available as all aluminium, all stainless steel and as a combination (hybrid) of both these two options.
IFRs can be cable or chain suspended from steel fi xed roofs or from Matrix Applied Technologies geodesic dome roofs.
Matrix Applied Technologies manufactures the following quality products for the abovegroundstorage tank industry:
• Aluminium Geodesic FlowDome™ Roofs• Aluminium Pontoon Internal Floating Roofs• Stainless Steel Pontoon Floating Roofs• Aluminium Full Contact IFRs• Floating Roof Seal Systems• Specialized Floating Suction Lines• SwingMaster Swing Joints• Floating Roof Drain Systems
Matrix Applied TechnologiesFloating Suction Lines & Skimmers
Matrix Applied Technologies is a global leader in the design and manufacture of fl oating suction lines and skimmers for use worldwide. Suction lines are commonly used for aviation facility Jet-A1 and Avgas tanks. Suction lines can be used in power plants, crude oil collection tanks or anywhere the quality of the product to exit the tank is an issue.
Matrix Applied Technologies can custom design fl oating suction lines and skimmers for various tank confi gura-tions. Lines are either installed in fi xed roof tanks or can be located below internal or external fl oating roofs.
Suspended type suction line
Sample lines
Sample lines can be provided on the main suction arm for fuel sampling. Matrix Applied Technologies can provide ¾” or 1” dia. sample lines. Typically, sample points are located at the center of lower third, middle third & upper third of the tank liquid level.
Roller type suction line
Roller type fl oating suction line. This suction line type is fi tted with a roller. The roller runs along the steel fl oating roof underside. No special track is required, the roller can negotiate plate overlaps.
The same suction line can operate beneath an aluminium or stainless steel IFR and, in this case, a track must be added beneath the IFR for the roller to run on. As an IFR manufacturer, Matrix Applied Technologies can design an appropriate suction line track and provide extra buoyancy for aluminium or stainless steel IFRs when necessary.
There are 2 main suction line types:• Suspended type. This type, pictured above, is most commonly used for fi xed roof tanks• Roller type. This type is for use beneath a steel or aluminium fl oating roof.Available line diameters: 3” to 44”.
