Students will ask questions that they have regarding the Verbal section of the SAT
Students will begin to understand basic test taking strategies in order to apply them in
throughout the course and on their SAT.

Key Concepts and Skills Students will organize test taking strategies in order to utilize these strategies throughout the
course when taking practice tests and honing skills in various question styles in the verbal
section of the SAT.
Learning Activities Students will present areas of concern and questions regarding the Verbal section of the SAT
Students will discuss what they already know regarding the Verbal section of the SAT by
answering questions regarding the basic structure of this portion of the test.
Students will discuss and write down answers to general test taking questions in order to
utilize these strategies on future assessments.
Assessments Students will respond to several questions regarding the structure of the Verbal section of the
SAT. Responses will demonstrate how familiar students are with this section of the exam.
Students will prepare several of their own questions/concerns regarding the Verbal section of
the SAT (What are you most concerned about-grammar, vocabulary, writing, etc.?, What do
you hope to gain from this course?, Have you taken an SAT prep course before?, What other
questions/concerns do you have regarding this test?)

Essential Questions Which specific test taking strategies should be utilized in the Sentence Completion section? Which skills will increase the retention of SAT vocabulary words? Which skills should be utilized in order to understand an “approximate” definition of a
word? Enduring Understandings
Students will review test taking skills specific to the Sentence Completion section of the Critical Reading section of the SAT.
Students will learn skills to assist in vocabulary retention (mnemonic devices, prefix, suffix, etc.)
Students will continue to review SAT vocabulary words throughout the course utilizing weekly vocabulary lists.

Key Concepts and Skills Students will understand test taking strategies specific to the Sentence Completion section
of the Verbal portion of the SAT. Students will utilize strategies in practice tests in order to hone these skills. Students will understand the use of mnemonic devices and other vocabulary skills to assist
in inferring the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary and to ensure retention of these words. Learning Activities
Students will respond to and discuss questions related to the Sentence Completion section of the Verbal portion of the SAT.
Students will discuss specific test taking strategies and practice these strategies with sample questions as a whole group and individually.
Students will analyze their process in answering Sentence Completion questions (ex: eliminating incorrect answers, identifying part of speech, recognizing the meaning of certain words, etc.)
Students will begin to document and organize various test taking strategies on notecards for future reference both for the course and for personal use prior to taking the SAT.
Assessments Students will document various strategies specific to Sentence Completion and will turn in
notecards for assessment of these notes Students will complete practice questions utilizing strategies from notecards and will
analyze the process they used to find the correct answer (focus on the process as opposed to the correct answer).
Students will take weekly vocabulary quizzes. Students will complete a practice test for the Sentence Completion section of the SAT.
