K-12 Educator ConferenceReaching for the STARS in STEM Education!
Come join your colleagues across the region as they collaborate together through a variety of interdisciplinary STEM workshop sessions. Through these sessions, you will learn about the latest applications in STEM learning and technologies, network with peers, and engage in thoughtful conversations of practice.
Focusing on content and pedagogy, these workshop sessions will allow you to explore how to create deeper learning experiences and move the conversation forward with your students, providing them with the skills and resources needed to direct their own learning, communicate effectively, think critically, collaborate, and creatively problem solve.

Yewande AustinArtist, activist and honorary U. S. Cultural Ambassador
From MTV to the historic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Yewande’s socially charged music has taken center stage with musical icons from the Black Eyed Peas to Maroon 5, but it is her work as an award- winning lecturer, social activist and honorary U. S. Cultural Ambassador that has become her greatest achievement. Today, this 2018 African Women Leaders “Extraordi-nary Voices” Honoree and 2017 President Barack Obama Lifetime Achieve-ment Award Honoree is recognized as an international expert in strategic diversity leadership, multidisciplinary education, social responsibility and youth development. Under her consultancy, the Global Institute for Diversity and Change, Ms. Austin has been credited with teaching over 3,000 insti-tutions how to improve diversity and inclusion strategies, academic access and achievement, and promote social responsibility. Through an innovative combination of education and the arts, her humanitarian organization, the Change Rocks Foundation, has taught over 250,000 vulnerable youth, advo-cates and educators in 16 countries from North and Latin America to Africa
and Europe how to create sustainable solutions that reduce poverty and injustice. This 2017, 2014 and 2013 CNN Hero nominee is currently building Alheri Village - a sustainable resettlement community for Boko Haram conflict refugees in Abuja, Nigeria. K-12 Educator Conference Keynote Presenters
Rachael MannSpeaker, TEDx coach, education consultant, and founder of #TeachlikeTED
Rachael Mann is the founder of #TeachlikeTED, an organization that pro-vides teachers, leaders, and students with tools for presentation literacy. Rachael uses her message and her expertise to broaden the conversation around education reform and to amplify the voices of teachers and students. Prior to #TeachlikeTED, Rachael was the STEM Professional Learning Direc-tor for the Arizona K12 Center and State Director for EdRising Arizona. A former high school Career and Technical Education teacher, Rachael has 14 years of classroom teaching experience. Ms. Mann is co-author of The Mar-tians in Your Classroom, a metaphor for the future of education and where we need to drive the learning space of the future, written in collaboration with Mr. Stephen Sandford, former Director for Space Technology and Ex-ploration at NASA’s Langley Research Center. Rachael is a Google Certified Educator with a master’s degree in Educational Leadership.
A Rock in the Hand is Worth Two in a Book: A Geological Field Investigation
Lace up your hiking boots and get ready for some field study work as we explore the geology of Virginia! Educa-tors who teach earth science will investigate topographical and geological maps, rock and mineral identification, structural geology measurements, geological cross-sections and more during field studies focusing on urban streams, Virginia’s beach and Eastern Shore regions, as well as the Blue Ridge and Piedmont regions. Resources for the classroom and career options will be shared with you.

Fishing for STEM in Aquaponics
The challenge to feed the world’s ever-increasing population is being met with the science of aquaponics. Par-ticipants will learn the fundamentals of rearing animals such as tilapia and oysters as sources of protein. Topics include the biology and genetics of cultured organisms, designs of recirculating aquaculture systems, logistics of protein “farms,” and relevant concerns in raising animals for human consumption. Come learn how to bring the field of aquaculture into your classroom and engage your students in exciting research that may pave the way for their future careers! The Case of the Missing X: Illuminating Student Thinking about Pre-Algebra Concepts
Come unlock the mystery of algebraic concepts! Pre-algebra concepts such as knowledge of patterns and functions lay the groundwork for all of abstract mathematics. In this course, educators who teach mathematics in Grades 3-6 will explore methods for modifying traditional textbook material to increase student engagement in open-ended algebraic problem solving, learn how to analyze student work in order to understand student think-ing and develop performance assessments that support deeper learning.
