Teaching Addition and Subtraction to Prep Students

How do we teach addition and subtraction in Prep?

Mathematics is everywhere!

• Children are using maths before they come to school.

• Some of the ways you can use maths are at home, when shopping, at the park, in the car and at the beach.


Children learn through hands on activities using concrete materials.


It is important that children start by learning to count to ten accurately, and then beyond.

Establish understanding of the language and processes of counting by naming numbers in sequence, initially to and from 10 and then 20, from any starting point.


One to one correspondence: matching each object to the count


Connect number names, numerals and quantities, including zero, initially up to 10 and then beyond.


When counting objects, we match the quantity to the numeral.
