05.05.2020LS: I am learning to recognise, describe and
build 3D shapes including making nets.
Lesson 10Arithmetic – Complete the 3 arithmetic questions on slide 10. Answers are on slide 11.Starter – 3D shape classification Use the lesson presentation to decide how many faces each 3D shape has. Discuss with someone at home which 3D shapes you know. NetsAn introduction to the definition of ‘nets’ and what they are. Complete the 3D shape net domino activity to test your knowledge. Tasks- Complete the Match the Nets Activity sheet.- Complete SATs CGP question book pages 74 and 75. - Challenge – Complete the investigation.
What is arithmetic?
Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that consists of the study of numbers,
especially the properties of the traditional operations:
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
You will be offered a set of 3 questions and will have 10 minutes to
complete them in. Please do any working
out in your yellow exercise books.

3D Shapes Classifications
Cylinder• 3 faces• 2 edges• 0 vertices
Cube• 6 faces• 12 edges• 8 vertices
Hexagonal Prism• 8 faces• 18 edges• 12
vertices
Pentagonal Prism• 7 faces• 15 edges• 10
vertices
How did you do? Before moving on to 3D nets we need to be secure in our
3D shape knowledge.
3D Shapes Classifications
Triangular Prism• 5 faces• 9 edges• 6 vertices
Square-based pyramid• 5 faces• 8 edges• 5 vertices
Cuboid• 6 faces• 12 edges• 8 vertices
Octahedron• 8 faces• 12 edges• 6 vertices
What are nets in geometry?A pattern that you can cut
and fold to make a model of a solid shape.
3D shapes have 3 dimensions: length, width
and height.

Shape Nets Dominos You have demonstrated your knowledge in 3D shapes, now let’s have a go at the 3D nets
domino activity!
If you can print this resource please find it on the Year 6 Google Drive or on the Year 6 class
page on the Smallberry website.
If you cannot print it, not to worry! Please
complete the domino activity into your
workbooks using the next slide.
Let’s get to work! Please visit the school website and click onto the Year 6 Class
Page or visit your Google Drive to download the activities for this
lesson. If you have a printer, you may complete your work directly on
the worksheet. If not, please complete the work in your yellow exercise book with the
date and learning step

Complete questions on Page 74 and 75 of your Maths SATs Question workbook.
Euler’s Rule
Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler (1707 - 1783) discovered a mathematical equation relating to the properties of 3D shapes:
Number of faces
Number
of Vertices
Number of Edges+ - = 2
Choose a 3D shape and prove that the equation is correct!
I leave you today Year 6 with an investigation…
