MATHEMATICS UPDATE
As parents await their respective reports with their children, I would like to
remind all of the benefits of discussing their child’s education and what was
completed at school that day, or by perusing through the exercise book to see
the quality of work that was completed. This also provides invaluable
revision to the child as they are reviewing their own work.
The Australian Mathematics Competition for the Commonwealth Bank
Awards will be held on Thursday 30th July and enrolments to date have been
good. Students from Year 7 to Year 10 will join in the competition.
This competition provides an opportunity for skill testing and mathematical
challenges. It rewards students with official certificates acknowledging their
level of achievement.
The Mathematics faculty is working closer with our partner primary school
on a new transition programme designed to assist student’s mathematics with
the move to high school. This endeavour involves teachers working together
to discuss, plan and build on teaching practices. It also provides
opportunities to further develop student mathematics skills, fostering greater
participation in tasks and challenges that open career pathways in the
engineering and higher mathematics fields.
Please also ensure your child/children have the correct equipment including
book, pens, pencils, ruler and calculator.

We are in the early stages of BYOD at West Wallsend High School. We cannot confirm a date when BYOD will
be implemented in our school at this time. This is due to a number of technical and policy changes within our
system. However, if parents are looking to purchase devices for home use, they would be advised to purchase
one of the recommended devices on the www.jbeducation.com.au/byod website, as these devices will be
compatible with our school once BYOD is implemented. The password for the website is DECNSW.
