Today’s PurposesToday’s PurposesAs a result of our work today, you

will understand that…

◦there are two sets of math standards

◦each standard is part of progression of learning that spans over grade levels

◦ Iowa Core Math standards will require change in curriculum, instruction and assessment

Practice Standard 3…Practice Standard 3…Discuss with an elbow partner how the

task engaged you in Practice 3.

What teacher actions would enhance that engagement?

What would you see students saying and doing during the task that would indicate they are engaging in Practice 3?

What changes in teaching and learning will be necessary for students to grow in Practice 3?

“Rather than racing to cover topics in today’s mile-wide, inch-deep curriculum, teachers use the power of the eraser and significantly narrow and deepen the way time and energy is spent in the math classroom. The focus deeply on the major work of each grade so that students can gain strong foundations.”

On the handout, talk with a small group about which component of Balanced Emphasis (procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, application) each standard seems to connect to most closely.

Page 11: Mathematics Iowa Core Implementation Network February 2013.

Now decide if each example of math work to the right captures the intent the standard.

Page 12: Mathematics Iowa Core Implementation Network February 2013.

Standards at each grade level allow students to build new understanding on foundations created in previous years.

Each standard is not a new event, but an extension of previous learning.

Standards at each grade level must be learned because future learning depends on them.

Standards within a grade level have connections that need to be explicit.
