Foreword
This list of learning resources identifies high-quality resources that have been recommended by the Ministry of Education to support the curriculum, Mathematics 1. This list will be updated as new resources are recommended and older ones are no longer available. A list of core learning resources can be found on the
Ministry of Education website.
(CAN) indicates that a Canadian contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Canadian content. (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Saskatchewan content. (FNMI) indicates that a First Nations, Métis, or Inuit person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes First Nations, Métis, or Inuit content. Resources evaluated and recommended as support for the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol curriculum frameworks and Saskatchewan’s provincial curricula have the designation (WNCP) before the annotation.
Other resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support the curriculum, Mathematics 1. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select materials that best meet the needs of their school or community. Educators should choose resources in accordance with their school division’s learning resources selection policy.

Included are charts outlining the types of manipulatives needed, and the suggested quantity recommended (where appropriate). AnnotationThis classic wordless picture book illustrates the concept of counting from one to twelve and shows the development of a village over several years. Included in the margin of each double-page spread are cubes representing the quantity and the numeral for the number to be counted. This is a challenging counting book as the objects are not always grouped together.

Bees, Snails, & Peacock TailsAnnotationIn this DVD program, nature’s patterns and shapes are explored. The bee builds the hive using hexagons. The diamond back rattlesnake and copperhead both have repeating shapes on their bodies. Geese fly in a v-formation so they do not get tired. Some of the other animals featured in the book are the spider, the peacock, and the puffer fish.
At the end of the program are additional facts about the animals.

Blockhead: The Life of FibonacciAnnotationIn this video program, the life of Leonardo Fibonacci is examined. Living in medieval Italy, Leonardo constantly thought about numbers. People called him blockhead because he daydreamed about numbers. As Fibonacci grew older and travelled the world, he studied how other countries use numbers and how they represent a numeral.
Today, Fibonacci is famous for his word problem about multiplying rabbits. He also discovered that things in nature seem to follow a certain pattern. Fibonacci is considered to be one of the greatest Western mathematicians of all time.

The Monsters decide to send gift boxes of fruit to their relatives. They want to send out boxes of 10 to each relative, and decide that no two boxes should contain the same combination of fruit. Addition and subtraction are used to help determine how many fruits of each kind are placed in each box.

Mapping The Monsters learn that Binary Bill does not know how to get to the Monsters’ castle from his computer shop. A free form map is drawn and sent to Binary Bill by email. When Binary Bill asks for landmarks, the Monsters label all the streets in their neighbourhood.

The problems are inspired by the art work, but not directly linked. Each double-page spread begins with an artistic masterpiece accompanied by a loosely related rhyme in which the author poses a mathematical question based on an item from the painting. The problems encourage students to mentally calculate different ways of arranging groups of objects into larger numbers. For example, after Henri Matisse’s painting, The Goldfish, Greg Tang asks readers to try re-organizing groups of fish in six different ways in order to make the number nine. Solutions appear at the end of the book along with brief notes on various forms of art. Students may benefit by modelling different solutions using manipulatives.
