Math This week we had so much fun with estimation for length, surface area, and weight. We loved using our balance scale and did a great job on our measurement test! “WEIGH” to go on Measurement Tests! Next unit will be all about Time! Reader’s Club We have been working on all kinds of stories about Weather and the Seasons during our small group reading time. Ask your kiddo about the two books they read this week. We also worked on our sight words by playing a memory card matching word game. We illustrated and wrote about our favorite weather and season. Keep working on those reading and writing skills at home too. At the listening center we had a great new book called Hibernation Station… what was your kiddos favorite part? Next week we will be working on more writing activities and sight word practice. Martin Luther King Jr This week we were able to learn all about this important man in history and how he helped pave the way so that all people would be treated equally. We enjoyed hearing a special story, singing a special song, and doing a few other projects and activities too. Plus, we also talked about the inaugural presidential ceremony that took place on Monday, Jan. 21 st . Reminders Monday, January 28 ~ Sound/letter binders will go home Tuesday, January 29 ~ New charts will go home for Not and On Friday, February 1 ~ Binders are due! FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM DAY… show your spirit and wear your FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM clothing!!! 100 th DAY special Project~ Be on the lookout for a special letter to come home with details about this amazing project!! Mrs. Jones’ Weekly News January 25, 2013 Language Arts We are truly enjoying this next unit all about What can I learn when I explore the outdoors. We have been learning all about the 4 seasons and the weather. Our Focus Question this week is: What weather can I observe as the seasons change. Also, this week’s reading strategy has been all about Making Connections Please continue to make connections at home as you read together with your child too. Letters for the Week: We are working on Letter Oo and Nn and identifying these sounds in the beginning, middle, and end of words. Plus, we are working on onset rhyme with the endings -OT -OP -ON -OX Have fun making up words at home with these endings too. Just For Your Information I just wanted to let you know that this week we had a “RED” alert practice drill and last week we had a “WHITE” alert practice drill at school. These are safety drills and procedures that we have put in place so that we all can remain SAFE if a medical emergency or other situation should arise. For a “white” drill…we stay in our classroom. For a “red” drill…we all go into the classroom closet (which is actually the size of a small classroom) Thought you might want to be aware of our classroom terminology for these practice drills at school. SIGHT WORDS We have now learned 25 new sight words. We learned NOT and ON this week. PLEASE try to have your child practice these words using flash cards, reading the charts, and writing sentences using these words too. Continued practice of these skills helps us to become better readers! Also…try using your sight word flash cards to different songs too. Like…Row, row, row your boat OR Twinkle Twinkle This is a fun way for you and your kiddo to practice these words together.
