Lesson: Standard Measurement
Asking Questions:
Brainstorm a list of objects that come in a standard size?
*dollar bills, credit cards, envelopes, paper, dvds, etc.
Exploring Concepts:
Have students get out several items from their desk. A piece of paper, a marker, a folder, and an
item of their choice.
Initiating Learning:
Have students measure the items they chose with a form of standard measurement.
Have students measure their items with a non standard measurement.
Organizing, Experimenting and Analyzing:
Have the students record each finding in a t-chart on the chalkboard. Orally discuss similarities
and differences in the findings.
Understanding and Extending:
Have the students make a graph that shows the difference between the items when using standardmeasurement and nonstandard measurement.
