Math Family SurveyStudents will take home a math survey to
complete with their parents. The survey includes the Problem Solving procedure and how we use real-world applications to solve problems.

Learning Goals:
To understand how we use math in real-world applications.
To read and answer word problems individually , in small groups or as a class.
To write/solve real-life word problems.

Teach:
We will be learning about real-life math problems and how we can solve them. It is important for us to see how math is used in our everyday lives.
To start the lesson, I will share some math story problems and ask for students to close their eyes and make a mind movie about what is happening in the problem.
Next, students draw a sketch of what they visualize and share with the class.
Students may also role play the story problem.Explain that students will work together in collaborative
groups to write their own math story problems. Then they will act out the scenes of the real-world task to show the real-world math context in their problems visually.

Activities:Students will work in collaborative groups to
make their own word problems and bring them to life by visual representation.
Students will share feedback with each other on how the representations are relative to the story problem or task.
Students will create a mental imae of the problem, the act out the problem and take pictures of the representation.
Students will use graphic organizers to solve problems.

Assessments:Performance Assessment: Students will
visually solve problems that relate to real-world math contexts and take pictures. This will be placed in the math portfolio for documentation over time to measure student progress.
Journaling: Students will be given time to write a reflection of the learning activities. A reflective analysis indicating what students may do differently next time must be included. This will also go into the portfolio.

Extension Ideas:Have class compile problems and pictures to
make a math photo album.

Mrs. Smith’s class ran a race. The students finished with these times in seconds:
39, 29, 38, 32, 43, 35, 37, 40, 26What was the slowest time?What was the fastest time?
What was the range of these times? What was the median? What was the mode?

The 4th grade needs 48 cupcakes for the party. Wal-Mart sells packages with 6 cupcakes in each. How many packages will we need to buy for the
party?
