Fractions

• Fractions are divided into three groups • 1. Proper fractions 1/3 4/9 5/7• 2. Improper fractions 4/3 5/2 10/5

• 3. mixed numbers 1 6/7 4 3/5 6 6/7• Now discuss about what a fraction I and what

they mean.

Negative fraction

• A negative fraction works the same as negative number if it goes below 0 then it becomes negative.

• -1/4 -5/8 -6/12

Simplify fractions

• To simplify a fraction like 6/8 you use a big 1 which works like this.

• 6/8 ÷ 2/2 = ¾• 6/9 ÷ 3/3 = 2/3• 10/20 ÷ 10/10 = ½

Comparing Fractions

• To compare fractions like 3/6 and 8/10 you can cross multiply and save you all the effort of finding the denominator.

Page 6: Math journal 4

Adding fraction• To add two fractions like 4/5 and 6/8.• You have to use the big 1 to create a common

denominator, which works like this. =62/40 =96/90

=81/88

Subtracting fractions

• To subtract a fraction you will first need to find the common denominator.

• The easiest way to do it is by using the big 1.

Multiply fractions

• Multiplying fractions is a simple process.• First you have two numbers 6/7 and 4/5.• Then you multiply the numerator by

numerator and denominator by denominator.

• 6/7 X 4/5 = 24/35 7/9 X 2/5 = 14/45• 8/10 X 3/7 = 24/70

Dividing fractions

• First you need two fractions like 4/5 and 7/8• Then you use the copy switch flip rule.• So you do it like this 4/5 X 8/7= 32/35• 5/7 ÷ 3/8 = 5/7 X 8/3 = 40/21• 7/8 ÷ 5/7 = 7/8 X 7/5 = 49/40

Number Fraction

• First you have a number in this case 5.• Then you put one as a denominator like this

5/1.• Last you can multiply or divide or do anything

else with the fraction.• 5/1 X ½ = 5/2 7/1 X ¾ = 21/4 4/1 X 2/3 =

8/3
