Centreville Elementary School First Grade Plans
April 27, 2020 - May 8, 2020 Dear Parents, We hope you find these resources helpful with instructing your child at home. In math we are going to start teaching new skills to the students. There are lots of helpful tips and instructions on the papers to help teach these skills. In reading we are doing two thematic weeks on 4/27-5/1 and 5/4-5/8. The first week we will be focusing on how things are built. The second week we will be focusing on how we can work together. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher.
Sincerely, CES First Grade Team
Math
This week we will be learning two new skills. The first skill is measurement. When we measure in first grade, we use non-standard measurement. Which means we measure using cubes, paperclips, string and other
tools. The students have paperclips and cubes in their packet to cut out to help them measure. Our second week we will be learning how to tell time. In first grade we tell time to the hour and the half hour
using an analog and digital clock. Students will learn how to draw the hands and write the time too.
Date Goal Procedures Activities 4/27/20 Compare
and order a set of objects by length.
1. Grab a few simple objects around your house like a pencil, crayon, remote control, ect. Have your child order them in length from shortest to longest. 2. Today in math we are working on comparing and ordering objects by their length. Talk about the rule that the objects must all be lined up at the same starting point to compare them. 3. Once the objects are all lined up then you can see which one is the shortest and longest. 4. Complete day 1 math pages.
Complete assigned math pages.
4/28/20 Express the length of an object as a whole number by the length of units.
1. Cut a piece of string or yarn to any length you choose, smaller than 12 inches. If you don’t have string use a strip of paper. Measure objects around the house comparing if they are smaller or bigger than the string. 2. Today in math we are comparing the length of objects based on the length of the gray string provided. 3. Remember that the objects must be lined up at the same starting point. Then length of the gray string is the same for both pictures given in each problem. 4. Complete day 2 math pages.
Complete assigned math pages.
4/29/20 Express the length of an object as a whole number by the length of units.
1. Find a collection of small paperclips. If you do not have any, then cut out the paperclips provided in the packet of work. 2. Grab a few objects like a pencil, piece of paper, a small book, and measure the length of the objects by lining up the paperclips beside the object, just like it is at the top of your paper. Talk about the length using the paperclips. 3. Today in math we are measuring objects using paperclips as our non-standard form of measurement. 4. Remember when lining up the paperclips, not to leave gaps between each paperclip. 5. Complete day 3 math pages.
Complete assigned math pages.
4/30/20 Express the length of an object as a whole number by the length of units.
1. Grab 3 books around your house. Put them in order from longest to shortest. Did you line them up correctly? 2. Today in math we are measuring objects by using pennies. So be sure to grab a collection of pennies. If you do not have pennies you can use the cubes provided to cut out in the packet. 3. Be sure when you line up your pennies that they are touching side by side. 4. Complete day 4 math pages. Don’t forget to send this
assignment to your teacher today!
Complete assigned math pages.
5/1/20 Express the length of an object as a whole number by the length of units.
1. Get a pair of your shoes and a pair of one of your parent’s shoes. Measure some objects around the house using your two shoes. Then measure them with you parents 2 shoes. Did you need more of your parent’s shoes or your shoes to measure? 2. Today in math we are using footprints to measure. 3. Example: If you are going to walk across a room from side to side it may be 22 student footprints, but 15 parent footprints because the parent’s footprints are larger. 4. Complete day 5 math pages.
Complete assigned math pages.
5/4/20 Tell time in hour and half hour using an analog and digital clock.
1. Why do we need a clock? Why is it important to know how to tell time? Start a discussion about it. 2. Today in math we are working on how to use the hour hand and minute hand in the clock. 3. The hour hand is the shorter hand on the clock. When we draw the hour hand it stops right before the number but should not touch the number. 4. The minute hand is the longer hand on the clock. When we draw the minute hand it goes all the way past the number to the end of the circle. Be sure your hands are different lengths. 5. Complete day 6 math pages.
Complete assigned math pages.
5/5/20 Tell time in hour and half hour using an analog and digital clock.
1. Today in math we are going to be writing time to the hour. 2. An hour is 60 minutes long. What can you do in 60 minutes? Brainstorm some ideas of some of your favorite activities, game or family fun things you can do in an hour. Maybe you could do one of those things later today. 3. When doing your work today remember that the hour hand is shorter, and the minute hand is longer. When you write your time digitally the hour number goes before the : (colon mark) and the minutes goes after the colon. For time to the hour we write 00 for the minutes. 5. Complete day 7 math pages.
Complete assigned math pages.
5/6/20 Tell time in hour and half hour using an analog and digital clock.
1. Today in math we are going to be writing time to the half hour. 2. Talk about things you can do in a half hour or 30 minutes. What fun family activities can you do? Can you drive somewhere? What games could you do? 3. Today when you draw the hour hand on the clock. It goes halfway in between the hour. So, for 7:30, the hour hand goes in between 7 and 8 and the minute hand goes on the 6. 4. To write the time digitally you write the hour before the colon mark and you write 30 for the minutes. 5. Complete day 8 math pages.
Complete assigned math pages.
5/7/20 Tell time in hour and half hour using an analog and digital clock.
1. Today in math we are going to be learning about how to read and use a schedule. 2. Talk about your daily schedule. What time do you get up? When do you complete your school work? What about eating dinner? Talk about why we use a schedule. 3. Use the schedules provided on the paper to help answer the questions today. 4. Complete day 9 math pages.
Complete assigned math pages.
5/8/20 Tell time in hour and half hour using an analog and digital clock.
1. Be creative and make your own schedule. Make sure you don’t forget to put in breakfast, lunch and dinner time. 2. Today in math we are reviewing how to draw the hands on the clock to show time to the hour and half hour. 3. Complete day 10 math pages. Don’t forget to send this
assignment to your teacher today!
Complete assigned math pages.
Optional Activities
• Practice measuring objects around the house using different math tools. Be creative, use coins, building blocks, cotton balls, any tools you can find. • Make your own telling time flash cards. Write the times digitally or draw the clock too. See if your child can flip the card over and tell you the time without thinking about it. Practice this several times a week.

Math Lesson: Measuring Length
Circle the child that is taller.
Circle the book that is bigger.
In first grade, we compare items by looking at their length. Length is the measurement of an object from one end to another.
We will be using nonstandard units of measure to measure the length of an object. A nonstandard unit of measure is any unit that is NOT inches, feet, yards, etc.
You can use cubes, paperclips, even crayons as nonstandard units of measure!
Cut out the boxes with cubes and paperclips on the next page. Keep these in a baggy or envelope you will need them for your tasks this week.
length
When we measure an object, there are several measurement rules we must follow!
If I wanted to measure a crayon with the cubes, this is how I would do it:
Rules of Measurement
1. Line up the ends.
2. Use one measuring tool at a time.
3. No gaps!
4. No overlaps!
5.
No gaps No overlaps
The crayon is ABOUT 7 cubes
long.
