Math in Focus™: The Singapore Approach is the world-class math curriculum from Singapore adapted for U.S. classrooms based on updated math standards. Based on their successful program for grades 1–5, publisher Marshall Cavendish has created an all-new Kindergarten Math in Focus program for U.S. schools. Teacher’s Edition pages strategically structure Kindergarten lessons in an Investigate–Discover–Explore–Apply format.

• Investigate — invites children to sing, clap, rhyme, and discuss colorful, playful scenes presented in the Big Book while the teacher systematically elicits related math talk

• Discover — provides hands-on work in small groups or pairs to allow children to act out or engage actively with the new math idea

• Explore — reinforces and enhances concepts as children go one step further with the concept

• Apply — provides children the opportunity to work independently with paper and pencil to practice the new concept or skill

Additional Resources

Student Activity Cards Cardstock sets of domino cards, numeral cards, and more allow students to easily manipulate pictorial and symbolic representations of quantity, shape, and other attributes.

Teacher Activity Cards Demonstration-size duplicates of the Student Activity Cards facilitate group instruction involving both pictorial and symbolic representations.

AssessmentsAge-appropriate assessments provide objective measures of students’ understanding of concepts and skills. Five “paper-and-pencil” assessments over the course of the year provide a clear picture of individual progress. Corresponding interview-style assessments provide an alternative assessment opportunity that allows students to interact with the teacher and actively demonstrate understanding.

Components for Kindergarten

Core ComponentsVolume A is designed for the first half of the year and Volume B is for the second half of the year.

The direct correlation of the Big Book and the Student Books allows for age-appropriate and mathematically sound practice, assessment, and development of problem-solving and thinking skills.

Additional learning activities found only in the Teacher’s Edition complete the instructional sequence for each lesson.

Additional Components: School-to-Home Connections contains parent involvement letters in English and Spanish. These communications provide “do at home” activities aligned to curriculum and key state learning objectives for each chapter.

Transition Guide (Grades 2–5) provides a map to help transition students into the Math in Focus program. The classroom teacher can easily scan through the skills and concepts presented in prior years to identify background knowledge necessary for student success. The Transition Guide addresses three key areas: number and operations, problem solving with bar models, and mental math strategies.

Student Whiteboards (Primary 1–2 and Intermediate 3–5) are convenient wipe-off boards that help students solve and show practice problems. They are packaged in sets of five.
