Film GradesAPTIV film is available in severalgrades according to the specific needsof the end use application. Withineach grade a broad range ofthicknesses are available from 6 to750 microns (0.25 to 30 mils). Thestandard width of APTIV film is 610 mm(24 in), although some films can beprovided in widths up to 1450 mm (57 in). On request, the stock rolls offilm can be further slit by Victrex to50 mm (2 in) width. Matte/Gloss andGloss/Gloss surface finishes arestandard. Other surface finishes maybe available upon request.

1000 SeriesAPTIV 1000 series films are unfilled semi-crystalline films. Available inthicknesses from 8 to 750 microns, they are typically the mostly commonlyused grades in the product range.

1100 SeriesAPTIV 1100 series are mineral-filledsemi-crystalline films with the fillercontent being available at twoloadings according to the applicationneeds. The films are available inthicknesses from 12 microns upward.

2100 SeriesAPTIV 2100 series are mineral-filledamorphous films. Thicknesses areavailable from 25 microns upward. The film is typically specified whereeither a higher modulus or lowercoefficient of thermal expansion isrequired and are often processed tothe semi-crystalline form using athermoforming process.

Secondary ProcessesAPTIV film can be subjected to a widerange of secondary process operations:

s Plasma surface treatment for thepromotion of adhesion.

s Metallization using a variety ofdeposition and lamination processes.

s Thermoforming into highlydetailed shaped parts.

s Adhesiveless heat lamination toother polymers and metals.

s Application of specialized coatings.

These secondary processes allowdesigners and engineers to obtain thebenefits of APTIV film properties in avariety of formats. (See pages 10 and11 for further details.)

The film is typically specified whereeither a higher modulus or lowercoefficient of thermal expansion isrequired.

1300 BlackAPTIV 1300 Black is a cosmetic gradeunfilled semi-crystalline film whichprovides the same properties as theAPTIV 1000 series natural color film. It is a suitable option when dark coloris a design requirement for applicationssuch as acoustic speakers. Thicknessesrange from 50 to 100 microns.

2000 SeriesAPTIV 2000 series films are unfilledamorphous films available inthicknesses from 6 microns up to 300microns. The 2000 series of films aretypically selected for processing to thesemi-crystalline state using athermoforming process, or whereductility or a level of optical clarity arerequired. When the amorphous film issubjected to temperatures above theglass transition temperature (Tg) ofVICTREX PEEK polymer (143°C/289°F),the amorphous film will revert to thesemi-crystalline form. This property isparticularly advantageous whenthermoforming parts from APTIV film.

9APTIV Film — Versatility and Performance

Application Case Studies…

Mobile Phone Speaker DiaphragmsAPTIV film is frequently chosen to meet the increasingdemands of the mobile phone speaker diaphragmapplication which requires diaphragms to handle extremelyhigh power inputs which produce increasingly hightemperatures while producing excellent sound qualityin smaller and smaller packages. APTIV films provide asignificant improvement in processability, acousticperformance – especially in low frequency response, durability, high temperatureperformance exceeding 220°C(428°F), chemical resistance, tearresistance and fatigue resistanceversus other high performancefilms on the market.

Flexible Film Sensors APTIV film has been selected for a variety of flexiblefilm sensors for its ability to withstand the exactingdemands of this application. APTIV film increases thereliability of the sensors ensuring they don’t fail whiledelivering the best combination of friction and wearproperties combined with high heat resistance, chemicaland radiation resistance, purity and electric insulation. In addition, the film is hydrolytically stable with verylow moisture absorption and permeability making it an ideal material forsensors used in a wider range of harsh environments.

Medical Equipment Laser Marked LabelsWhen labels fade or fall off equipment they areunreadable. APTIV film reduces the risk of this productfailure. As such it has been specified for highly durablelaser markable medical labels because of its excellentresistance to aggressive cleaning and disinfecting agentsused in demanding surgicalenvironments. APTIV filmlabels can be readily printedusing laser marking as wellas a number of otherconventional printingtechniques.

Hot Wrapped Electrical InsulationUnlike traditional polyimide (PI) insulation which requiresan adhesive layer, APTIV film can be directly heat laminatedaround copper wire to make an adhesive-less, completelysealed, highly durable insulation layer. The elimination ofadhesives allows for a thinner insulation wrap leading toimproved thermal conductivity. It was selected to replacePI for the manufacture of high efficiency flat wire motorcoils because it resists the high strain bending processwhich caused other materials to delaminate and fail thusincreasing product reliability andmanufacturing yield. Its outstandingelectrical insulation properties andenhanced chemical and hydrolysisresistance improve operation inharsh environments.

Heat ExchangerBy replacing metal in its spiral plate heat exchangers withAPTIV film, the manufacturer was able to enhance thedesign of the exchanger, reduce weight, improveperformance and reduce overall systems cost. In thisdesign, APTIV film provides the right combination of hightemperature performance and chemical resistance. It provides an effectivebarrier against manyliquids and gases, ishalogen-free, andwithstands lead-freesoldering processtemperatures.

Aerospace Insulation SystemsCommercial aircraft producers and insulation manufacturersare actively developing new lightweight thermal acousticblanket (TAB) insulation systems constructed with APTIVPEEK polymer-based covering film. The APTIV film-basedcovering films provide an insulation solution that meets theFAA’s performance requirements while giving the airlines alighter weight solution versus traditional covering films.APTIV film-based cover film laminatesmeet FAA FAR 25.856(a) radiantpanel testing which mandates theimproved resistance to flamepropagation for thermal and acousticinsulation blankets. Cover films canalso be laminated to specializedburn-through barrier systems thatmeet FAA FAR 25.856(b).
