How to quote mezzanines and work platformsMezzanines and work

platforms are an afford-able way to increase floor space when building an addition or relocating to a larger facility is not an option. Mezzanines can vastly increase warehouse efficiency by allowing for utilization of overhead space, while maintaining the floor level space. Offices, storage, work space, catwalks, tool cribs and dust covers are just a few applications suitable for mezzanines.

Following is the standard information we ask our customers when quoting a mezzanine or work platform:

• What size mezzanine is being requested? W x L x H as well as either the clear height requirement below the mezzanine or the deck height requirement.

• If a specific column spacing is required, we will need to know this. Otherwise, the most economical will be used.

• How will the mezzanine be used? For example – storage, equipment, personnel or something else?

• What is the capacity requirement per square foot – PSF (pounds per square foot)?

• Does the mezzanine need to meet a specific building code or be ADA compliant? Although the International Building Code (IBC) governs most of the US, it is important to dou-ble check requirements. This is especially true for Western States that have high Seismic requirements.

• What type of deck is required? Wildeck provides a good summary of decks available.

• How many internal and / or external stairs will be required and will they need to open or closed risers? Standard width is 36". We will need to know if a custom width is needed. Will any landings be required?

At WPRP, our goal is to help you and if you have additional questions about how to quote a selective/structural pallet rack system, do not hesitate to contact us. Our pallet rack specialists are happy to help you through the quoting process.www.wprpwholesalepalletrack.com

J.W. Speaker announces partnership with J. Fuehr GMBHJ.W. Speaker Corporation (JWS) has announced a new business

arrangement with J. Fuehr, GmbH to establish J. Fuehr as its distri-bution partner and order fulfillment center for products sold into the "industrial" aftermarket in Europe, Russia and the Middle East. This new arrangement complements the business J. Fuehr already enjoys in the material handling market, in which capacity the firm rep-resents JWS with select original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as well.

Established in 1972 and located in Hamburg, Germany, J. Fuehr is a leading distributor of high-quality material handling vehicle lighting, switches and accessories, providing value-added "systems" for OEMs and aftermarket customers. J. Fuehr serves as the market "expert" in providing applications-specific solutions for OEM customers, with the ability to specify customization required to solve problems. The firm has also recently expanded its capabilities and services to support other markets, such as construction and agriculture.

J. Fuehr will operate as an extension of JWS, designated as our distribution partner for products sold to certain OEMs and into the "industrial" aftermarket in the territories in scope. Additionally, J. Fuehr will serve as the order fulfillment center for JWS' N. Ameri-can-based distributors who export industrial-related lighting prod-ucts. To this end, J. Fuehr has invested in developing resources while maintaining an inventory and expertise to support existing customers and targets alike.

Tim Speaker, Co-President of J.W. Speaker Corporation, explains: "Our longstanding partnership with J. Fuehr. has been elevated, wherein our partner will take care of distributors, as well as small OEMs, in Europe, Russia and the Middle East. We're excited about the prospects of jointly growing our business with J. Fuehr, particu-larly in the industrial aftermarket, for which we've recently launched many innovative new products."

According to Alexander Fuehr, "J.W. Speaker is a very reliable partner with whom we have been able to realize many exciting projects with our customers. Their willingness to develop new, inno-vative products has helped us grow and differentiate ourselves from the competition. We are happy to further intensify this partnership and raise it to a new level. We're confident that J. Fuehr's extensive experience in the 'Industrial' market will enhance the success of this business arrangement between our two firms." www.jwspeaker.com

Creamer’s Corner

Simplify my life, pleaseMike Creamer

A big issue of my customers is that the sweepers and scrubbers of today are so complicated. Many of my colleagues regularly ask me if it is all necessary, or why they can’t make it simpler.

Th e short answer is that it could be simplifi ed in several ways. Th e long answer is that many items added to the design are for safety and very necessary.

So, let’s talk about some of these issues. When I entered this market years ago, one problem that had occurred time and time again was fi re in the hopper as a result of sweeping hot cigarettes into the hopper. Th is problem was very dangerous and had to be solved. Tennant solved it by installing a fusible link that broke when heat was introduced and closed the air intake of the hopper. Th ey fi gured that no air, no fi re. It worked beautifully and was used for years. Today, an electronic heat sensor replaced the old fuse design and is required to be installed on all models.

One item you could probably get rid of is your side brush up and down switch. All four sweeper manufacturers originally used a simple lever to control the side brush. Th e operator released forward for the down position and pull the lever back, locking it in the up position, very simple. Th e American Lincoln Model ATS46/53 still wisely uses the main and side brush lever.

Today with the switch design, of course, the switch goes bad. Howev-er, the actuator needs replaced from time to time, especially in a severe environment. Average price on an actuator is $250.00 to $300.00 and labor, which in today’s market could be very costly. Typical models would be the Tennant 810 sweeper or the American Lincoln 3366XP.

When Tennant replaced the 527II/528 generation with the Model 7400 in 1996 there were quite a few design changes. With these changes came one that few people are even aware. Unlike the manual scrub brushes adjustment the new 7400 had hydraulic cartridges in a valve to control the up and down pressure. Not only that, but there is more than one cartridge which coincides with the brush being used for your application. So, if you are using an aggressive grit brush, you need the aggressive grit cartridge, a nylon requires the nylon cartridge and so on. In short, if you used a nylon brush with an aggressive brush cartridge that brush will basically have about ½ life wear because of the down pressure applied to the brush.

Th e complications of this equipment is one of the top issues I am hearing so often that I will discuss more in the future on this subject. But think about this; as I was sitting behind the wheel of an American Lincoln Model ATS46, between the levers, push button switches, warn-ing lights, pedals and instrument gauges, there were 29 diff erent items to push, pull, press, watch or whatever else you have to do.

At this time, I also want to thank MH Network for the privilege of sharing my knowledge and experiences every month in Creamer’s Cor-ner. May all of you have a wonderful holiday season.

For your comments or questions, please e-mail me at [email protected] or call at 1-800-346-2319.

Creamer's Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear's Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber.

Tweak the TreatLucy DelSarto

To tweak is to modify, alter, change or refine. Today’s society has become obsessed and addicted to sugar which contributes to numer-ous health issues from diabetes to obesity. Holidays tend to magnify the situation. The outcome is not so sweet for your well-being.

According to the National Confectioners Association, sweets-mak-ers reap 8% of their annual sales during Halloween, making it candy's biggest holiday.

Market Research experts from IBISWorld estimate that over $6.86 billion is spent during the Halloween season. The breakdown includes 31% candy, 36% costumes, 28% decorations and 5% cards. The firm’s analysis noted that Americans spent $228 billion for all major holidays in 2010 from Father’s Day to Thanksgiving.

In 2009, Lucy DelSarto, the Health & Wellness Coach at TVH, created a community event called “Tweak the Treat.” This year, TVH partnered with TCOY (Take Care of You) Wellness by being the Plat-inum Sponsor of this annual post-Halloween event.

This family event encourages the wellness lifestyle by teaching moderation, being active and expressing gratitude. People bring in their excessive Halloween candy and treats. In exchange, they receive activity passes from local gyms such as 360 Gymnastics, Tiger Rock Karate, Prairie Life Fitness and Title Boxing. In addition, fresh fruit, toothbrushes, mini TVH soccer balls and a variety of gifts are provid-

ed. Kids and adults alike also enjoy a face-painting experience. Once a kid, always a kid!

Participants are encouraged to write a note or two to those serving in our military. The notes are included in the boxed up treats being sent to our military personal. Some packages are sent over-seas and many will be sent to hospitals in Ft. Riley, Ft. Carson and Ft. Leon-ard Wood. These locations treat hundreds of wounded soldiers who are hospitalized up to 18 months with severe injuries.

The event is always held on the first Sunday in November; how-ever, people continue to drop off treats through November 12th at various drop-off locations. TVH is one of the drop-off spots.

By involving children in the event, they are able to share and relate to what it means to share from the heart and get involved in things that will enhance their well-being, both mentally and physically. TVH employees Karen Finney and Robin Kresin volunteered at the event. Karen shared, “It’s really inspiring to see how this event is touching so many lives. People we will never meet will be given hope and know they are loved. I love that TVH is so involved in sponsor-ing wonderful events like this.”

North American robotics market sets new records for first nine months of 2015

Robot orders and shipments in North America set new records in the first nine months of 2015, according to Robotic Industries Association (RIA), the industry’s trade group.

A total of 22,427 robots valued at $1.3 billion were ordered from North American companies in the first nine months of 2015, an increase of six percent in units and nine percent in dollars over the same period in 2014, which held the previous record. Robot shipments to North American customers through September totaled 21,436 robots valued at $1.2 billion, breaking the previous record set in 2014 by 16% in units and 10% in dollars.

Sales activity continued to be strong in both automotive and non-automotive industries. Automotive related orders were up six percent through September, while orders to non-automotive industries such as electronics, food & consumer goods, and metals increased five percent over 2014.

“Demand for robots is at an all-time high, and companies of all sizes, in all sectors of the economy, are realizing the benefits of automation,” said Jeff Burnstein, President of RIA. “Robots are optimizing production more than ever, increasing global competi-tiveness, and performing dull, dirty and dangerous tasks that enable companies to create higher-skilled, better-paying, and safer jobs for their employees.”

“Even with the record sales of robots, the unemployment rate in the U.S. continues to be at its lowest rate of 5.1% since 2008,” added Alex Shikany, RIA Director of Market Analysis. “This data confirms what is detailed in our recent white paper ‘Robots Fuel the Next Wave of U.S. Productivity and Job Growth’ which illustrates how increasing use of robots is associated with increased employment.”

RIA estimates that some 236,000 robots are now at use in United States factories, placing the US second only to Japan in robot use.www.robotics.org

TVH pinks out and raises over $2400 for breast cancer awareness

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, TVH in the Americas (TVH) hosted a “Pinked Out” event for all of its employees on October 23rd. During this event TVH employees wore pink and were given the opportunity to buy tickets and then use those tickets to vote for the executive, manager or assistant manager they wanted to “pink out” and wear a pink morph suit for the day. The winner of the “Pinked Out” event was TVH’s Vice President & General Manager, Frank Carter. He proudly donned on the pink body suit and walked around the building, attended meetings and showed his support for this important cause. The employees at all locations raised an amazing $1,245 that was matched by TVH for a total do-nation of $2,490 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. This was just one of several events that TVH has planned to help raise money and to support breast cancer awareness. www.tvh.com

Gregory Poole Equipment successfully completes acquisitions from three Hyster® and Yale® dealers

Gregory Poole Equipment Company announced that it has closed on its acquisition of the operations and assets of Dougherty Equip-ment Company, Inc. and VBS Inc. Material Handling Equipment and certain assets of Briggs Equipment, Inc. The acquisition process has uncovered significant economies of scale and synergies and is expected to nearly double the division’s annual revenue.

Following this acquisition, Gregory Poole has been appointed as an authorized dealer of Hyster® and Yale® lift trucks across four states and one of the region’s largest overall material handling dealers. It is now the Yale® dealer in portions of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, and the Hyster® dealer in most of Virginia and in por-tions of North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia. While Gregory Poole will no longer represent other competitive supplier re-lationships, it will continue to support its current customers through existing service agreements.

“Since our founding in 1951, we have built our organization on the core values of integrity and excellence in all that we do,” said Hal Ingram, Lift Systems Division vice president, Gregory Poole Equip-ment Company. “We have pulled from the best of several well-re-spected and high-performing organizations to create a top-notch team, and we can now provide customers with more reduced costs and lower total cost of ownership than ever before, along with a full range of Hyster® and Yale® forklift trucks from Class I to Class V.”

The acquisitions were driven by the company’s desire and directive to grow and by its strategic goal to be the recognized leader in the products it offers. NACCO Materials Handling Group (NMHG) helped to facilitate these transactions to address succession issues in several high-performing dealerships and to ensure continuity for customers, dealers and associates. The addition of Gregory Poole as a dealer, allows NMHG to expand its U.S. dual-brand distribution of its Hyster® and Yale® product lines.

“We have enjoyed working with all parties over the last 24 months to ultimately come to a resolution that is mutually beneficial without losing sight of the customer and associate,” said NMHG Vice President Dealer Business Development, Bob Sattler. “Expert technicians, industry-leading equipment and experienced consult-ing solutions made Gregory Poole one of the most respected dealers in the business. We are confident that this restructuring will bring greater support and product access to our customers, while providing valuable additions to our strong network of authorized Hyster and Yale dealers.”

Customers can expect to see the following:

• Enhanced service and support. The new Gregory Poole will have more technicians, deeper expertise, enhanced technician training and enhanced mixed fleet support.

• Larger capital investment results in more tooling, enhanced parts inventory, larger rental fleets, allied lines, demo equip-ment, service vans, etc.

• More advanced technology systems to offer greater connec-tivity and more substantial fleet management programs.

• Most importantly, due to the economies of scale and oper-ating efficiencies, the forthcoming fleet management tools and combined expertise, Gregory Poole believes that many customers will actually see reduced costs and lower total cost of ownership as a result of this transaction.

Gregory Poole remains committed to providing unsurpassed support and service and delivering value to customers. The company’s continued integration efforts will focus heavily on making the transi-tion seamless for its valued customers. www.gregorypoole.com

Toyota celebrates 25 years of manufacturing excellence in Indiana

Toyota Industrial Equipment Mfg., Inc. (TIEM), the Indi-ana-based company responsible for building Toyota brand forklifts, commemorated the manufacturing plant’s 25 years of operations in the U.S.A. The event, which was attended by Toyota’s 1,500-plus as-sociates and Indiana’s Governor Mike Pence, highlighted the compa-ny’s further investment in the community with multi-million dollar plans to expand the TIEM campus. In addition, Toyota announced its partnership with the Columbus Express Soccer Club to sponsor a new local indoor soccer facility to be named the Toyota Industrial Equipment Soccer Pavilion.

“Toyota’s 25th anniversary manufacturing forklifts in the U.S. couldn’t have happened without our suppliers, customers, dealers and all of the Toyota associates who have helped along the way,” said Brett Wood, president and CEO of Toyota Material Handling North America. “We are proud to call Columbus, Indiana, the home of Toyota Forklifts.”

Looking ahead, Toyota recently announced a new $16 million dollar expansion and building renovation. The 50,600-square-foot addition will increase the total facility to 1.1 million square feet of manufacturing and support space. The new building and renovation will provide room to support human development activities, new manufacturing technology development, and new product develop-

ment, along with the company’s Vision 2020 strategic initiatives. The expansion includes a two-story office building, a new cafeteria, a new storm shelter & locker room and expansion space for Toyota’s on-site medical center for associates and their families. The new building will also serve as headquarters for Toyota Material Handling North Ameri-ca, the North American division of Toyota Material Handling Group. www.toyotaforklift.com

Raymond celebrates 35th anniversary of parts distribution center

Th e Raymond Corporation is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Raymond parts distribution center located in Syracuse, New York. Th e parts distribution center in Syracuse celebrated with a luncheon for its employees and special guest speakers, including Steve Raymond, the fi rst general manager of the Raymond parts distribution center, grandson of founder George Raymond Sr., and current president of Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation. People don’t think about it this way, but maybe they should. Let me tell you a story about a company where a lack of training was costing $1.68 million a year.

There was once a chain of nine floor covering stores that was doing $12 million in annual sales. They had an overall goal to increase profits, which were sitting at an average profit margin on products sold of 34%.

Knowing that they could improve their margin if they focused on training and raised pricing, they trained salespeople to use sales tools and helped customers understand the true value the company offered. They focused on solving customer problems by concentrat-ing more on the customer’s needs and helping them find the right products. By demonstrating value and being better in assisting their customers meet their needs, they increased margin and sales.

As a result, the company increased their margin from 34% to 48% - a 14% improvement. In that $12 million company, the result was a $1.68 million increase in gross profit dollars plus increased sales. The improvement in profit was demonstrable. The reality is that the true differentiator was the training. If they’d simply changed out the merchandising without doing the training, it would have had a much smaller impact.

Another way to look at it is that for years, a failure to train was costing that company $1.68 million a year in gross profit. The cost of training for this company was in essence $1.68 million per year, because they didn’t spend any money on training. You see, every company pays for training. You can either pay for it up front or you pay for it through poor results at many times the cost of doing it right.

Are you too paying for training without knowing it? Let’s take a close look at just how that could be happening to you.

Lost opportunity: You can train staff to close more sales

Let’s say that your staff should be closing 40% of sales, but cur-rently they are only closing 30%. That means you are losing 25% of potential sales; if your company is doing $10 million in annual sales, you are losing $3,333,333 in sales.

With training, increasing a close rate from 30% to 40% is a reasonable expectation. It can mean training staff how to be more polite, listen better, present products more effectively – and ask for the order. It is very, very doable. And if you are not doing it, you are paying for training without even realizing it.

Which is more costly, losing $3 million in sales or investing in training?

Lost opportunity: You can train to improve employee retention

Losing employees is costly. According to a study by the Center for American Progress, the cost of replacing a worker who earns be-tween $30,000 and $50,000 a year is 20% of annual salary, or about $10,000. (If you’re losing employees who earn more than $50,000, replacing each of them will cost you even more.)

Let’s assume that you have 250 employees and that your annu-al turnover rate is 30%. So you’re losing 75 employees a year and spending $750,000 to replace them.

(You’ll also be losing money by paying unemployment benefits, losing sales during the time their jobs are not covered, and more, but let’s not figure that in.)

What if you did a better job of training employees and cut your turnover rate by 5%, from 30% to 25%? That is also very doable. That 5% improvement will pay you back more than you expect. If you have 250 employees, you will be losing only about 60 workers a year, not 70, a saving of about $100,000 a year.

Incidentally, the link between training and retention is well docu-mented. Well-trained employees are happier and therefore less likely to leave. And because they do their jobs better, you will have to fire and replace fewer of them.

Which is cheaper - having a high turnover rate that costs you $100,000 a year, or investing in training?

Lost opportunity: You can train salespeople to sell just a little more on the average ticket

Let’s assume that your average customer spends $25 on each visit to one of your locations. Through training, you can increase that average ticket to $28. Your staff can learn to refer customers to other products, upsell, and apply other simple strategies.

Let’s further assume that you have 400,000 customer transac-tions a year. If you can train your salespeople to increase ticket size from $25 to $28, you will increase annual sales from $10 million to $11,200,000.

Which is cheaper, losing a $1,200,000 in sales or investing in training?

Lost opportunity: You can train to improve customer retention

If your company does that same $10 million in annual sales and your customer retention rate drops five percentage points, which means you have lost $500,000 in sales. Yet the right kind of training in areas likes sales and customer service has been shown to retain many more customers. Again, it is “doable.” And the result can be a big improvement in profitability.

Which is cheaper, losing $500,000 worth of customers a year or training?

Let’s review

You pay for training, one way or another. Every company pays for training. You can either pay for it up front or you pay for it through poor results at many times the cost of doing it right.

Your company results are affected by the quality of the training your company provides. Investing in training upfront is going to provide you a 10x or greater return on your dollar.

Additionally, training is the safest investment you can make. If you spend more money in advertising, it may or may not be effective in bringing customers to your business. Training is about improving results with the customers you already have coming to your business.

Question: every business is different, how much is poor training costing you? How could investing in training upfront improve your profits?

Kion North America launches new brand

KION North America Corporation hosted a meeting for its dealer network from Oct. 28-30 in Charleston, SC. More than 140 attendees representing 90 percent of the company's dealer network were in attendance at the fi rst large-scale meeting since the company changed its name from Linde Material Handling North America at the start of this year.

Over the course of two and a half days, KION North America shared their long-term strategy, showcased the most new products at one time in the company's history and unveiled new sales and marketing tools.

Among the new products was the Linde brand's new Series 1411 heavy truck. Equipped with a torque converter, this Class V diesel-powered forklift has a load capacity of up to 40,000 pounds and is perfectly suited for heavy manufacturing, lumber, ports and terminals, precast and concrete, steel/aluminum and oil/gas applications.

Additionally, KION North America launched Baoli, a forklift brand entirely new to the North American marketplace. KION Baoli Forklift Co., Ltd is the international, highly competitive material handling manufacturer for the economy segment.

Th e fi rst model to be introduced is the Class V Baoli D+ Series Model KBG25, which is now available for purchase. Th is model features a load capacity of 5,500 pounds and a Nissan IMPCO K25 LPG engine. Additional Baoli models are currently being developed specifi cally for the North American market and will be released over the next several years.

Designed to meet the needs of the economy segment of the U.S. market, these budget forklifts are manufactured in a state-of-the-art facility in Jiangsu province, the largest economic region in China.

Th e forklift manufacturing process is completed with extensive quality assurance testing of all functions to ensure the highest level of reliability is met according to U.S. standards prior to each new forklift truck being delivered.

KION NA is distributing and supporting the Baoli range to complement the extensive world-renowned Linde range of warehouse, electric counterbalance and internal combustion products. Th ese new forklifts are for sale through our nationwide distribution network.

By combining the competitive advantages of KION's operational excellence and German engineering with Baoli's integrated manufacturing platform, we are able to off er reliable and practical products.
