WPRP’s insider tips for Modex 2016 or any show
Around this time every couple of years, we start getting pretty excited around the WPRP offices. Why? Because the MODEX show is once again fast approaching. We’ve been attending MODEX shows for several years now, and we’ve always found them to be great networking and learning experiences. Now that we’ve been to a few MODEX shows and have gotten the hang of how to maximize the utility of our time there, we wanted to share a few of our tips with those who are new to the show, as well as those who simply feel like they have room for improvement when it comes to how they spend their time there. We’ve distilled what we’ve learned into a few prima-ry tips that will get you the best “bang for your buck.”
Make a networking game plan
If you’re planning on attending a show, chances are you’re not planning only on walking around aimlessly and ogling at the exhibits. While it’d be easy to do this for a few days and you could learn a lot doing it, most attendees plan on spending at least part of their time at the show making connections with peers. To make sure you get the best ROI from your networking efforts, make an effort to be deliberate about them. Make a spreadsheet or some other sort of schedule that includes the contacts you want to meet, as well as the times and places you want to meet them. It doesn’t have to be elaborate; it just needs to include the relevant information in an organized way.
Meeting rooms
Whether it’s with your own team, long-time industry friends or newly-acquainted colleagues, you’ll inevitably want to sit down to talk for more than the standard five-minute chat. When the time comes to do so, you can always book an off-site conference room. However, there’s a better way: on-site rooms. When you reserve an on-site meeting room, you’re saving everyone in your party either valuable time or money, both of which can be in short supply at a trade show. It’s easy to reserve a meeting room online so that you know it’ll be there when you need it.
#modexshow
At MODEX or any show, Twitter can be one of your most useful tools. By using the #modexshow hashtag, you can keep tabs on everything that’s going on at the show and stay in touch with your fellow attendees. By tweeting, you can learn about what’s going on somewhere else at the show, or let your contacts know when you’re already there. At an event the size of MODEX, it’s one of the fastest and most convenient forms of communication.
Are there any useful tips that we left out? Reach out to us and let us know!

Become the Exception
"Remember, it is only a movie."Mike Marchev
The three "L's" (plus 1)"Three" (3) is a number that is easily followed. Know you’re
A.B.C's. It is easy as 1.2.3. Pick a color: Red, blue or yellow. Ready, set, go.
Here are three more words to remember as long as you want to stay in business. Look, listen, & learn.
Look.In other words, pay attention. See how others are doing things and
what you might want to try.Notice what you do not like, and are not attracted to. Watch oth-
er’s behaviors and notice what draws you closer to people or drives you away. Look at your own marketing materials through the eyes of your prospects. Is the language and layout what you have in mind? Always be watching.
Listen. You already know what you already know. To become better,
smarter and more successful you must build upon your current knowledge base. This cannot be done while talking. You must stop talking and begin to listen more.
If you want to focus on any one area that will do you the most good in the years ahead, start thinking about asking better questions. Then, listen to the replies like your life depends on it. It does.
Learn. You will definitely learn a lot by watching and listening. I am sug-
gesting you raise the bar a notch by introducing what often appears to be a lost art. I want you to start reading more.
I tend to gravitate toward business books, but quite frankly I don’t care what you read. Two things will result from your reading: (1) You will learn something new; (2) You will find that your imagination will begin to run its own course and new ideas will begin to flow like a raging river. Both outcomes are worthwhile.
Plus 1. Breaking the pattern of "three" I would like to remind you of one more “L.”
Laugh. Your sense of humor will get you through many rough spots, and
if you have been in business more than two minutes, you already know that there are plenty of rough spots.
Let’s keep this business thing in perspective. You can enjoy the uncer-tainty and go with the natural flow, or you can continue to beat your head against the wall hoping that when you stop, you will feel better.
Stuff happens folks. You and everybody around you will be better off with a good laugh now and then. Don't take yourself too seriously. (The Lord knows I don't.)
I am not sure where this next quote came from or what it actually means, but when I get down and frustrated, I find myself saying to myself, “Mike, remember, it is only a movie.” Meaning ... Life is short. Enjoy the ride.
Sincerely,Mike Marchev

Business Profile
West Point Rack, Inc.With quotes provided in one or two hours and delivery within two
to three weeks, West Point Rack lives up to its slogan, “We don’t just promise...We deliver!”
Established over 10 years ago, West Point Rack is a fast-growing company with a competitive price and a very service oriented man-agement team.
“Pricing is always an issue and we offer very competitive pric-es. However, service and standing behind your product once it is delivered is critical to building lasting relationships with dealers. If product issues do arise, we address those issues immediately with the goal of creating satisfaction for both our dealer and their customer,” said Terry Sroka, Chief Executive Officer.
West Point Rack only offers its products to distributors and is a member of MHEDA (Material Handling Equipment Distribu-tors Association).
“We don’t sell to end users,” said Reva Billy, President of West Point Rack. “If we get a call from an end-user, we refer them to a dealer.”
“In addition, our trade policies are geared to the needs of our dealers. West Point Rack handles freight on a prepay and add basis plus we sell on open accounts with terms of 1%/10, net 30 to accounts with approved credit” said Sroka.
The Nebraska based company provides a variety of racks to meet customer needs including:
• Cantilever racks in light, in-termediate, heavy and extra heavy-duty configurations.
• Structural pallet racks that are sturdy enough to handle any kind of abuse from forklifts or ex-treme environments. Racks are available as galvanized or painted steel to minimize rusting and can be configured to meet almost any need a customer may have.
• Portable stacking racks can be made to order. Any size for your specific needs can be fulfilled.
• Specialty products made by West Point Rack include bar cradle trucks, drum racks and handcarts.
In addition, West Point Rack has recently added new products to their line of racks. Included is a new line of Reel Racks, ranging in height from eight to 12 feet. Reel Racks come with a gray paint finish, but other colors are available upon request. Vertical racks, which will hold material from 21 inches to 12 feet, features six-inch deep arms with three shelves made of 14-guage steel. U-Racks, which come with an orange paint finish, can be stacked up to four units high to save space.
Customers can see specifications and photos of any rack they may be interested in purchasing by visiting www.westpointrack.com. And if you don’t see what you are looking for, call 866/245-3630. West Point Rack may be able to fill your need.
“I always look for things when we do specials,” Sroka said. “Does it have any potential of becoming a standard product? That is how we developed a lot of our standard products.”
West Point Rack’s motto is the reason they will continue to be one of the fastest growing companies in the industry.
“I don’t want to be one of the biggest rack companies out there, just one of the better ones,” Sroka said. “Our primary goal is to support our dealers, satisfy their customers, earn trust and be the ‘Vendor of Choice’ for rack products and racking systems.”

Performance-optimizing design lands Yale® Good Design™ award
Yale Materials Handling Corporation announces its MPR100VG enclosed end rider has received a 2015 GOOD DESIGN™ award. The enclosed end rider was selected for its state-of-the-art technology, enhanced ergonomic design and class-leading lifting capacity. The GOOD DESIGN awards are presented by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, and honor the best industrial designers and world manufacturers for their pursuit of extraordinary design excellence.
“This recognition validates the continued commitment Yale has to delivering lift trucks with unparalleled performance and operator comfort,” said Clay Taylor, Product Manager for Yale. “The enclosed end rider embodies what we strive to provide customers with when creating a new product – a design that helps increase throughput, boosts operational efficiency and reduces costs.”
Engineered for demanding multi-shift applications, the MPR100VG enclosed end rider is equipped with Yale® iSi Technology™, a common control system with consistent functionality across the Yale® warehouse product line. The system also offers programmable performance modes which allow operators to customize truck performance to their individual skill level.
Ergonomically designed for maximum comfort and productivity, the enclosed end rider compartment features a contoured backrest, fully padded compartment and cushioned, electronic floor mat. The electronic floor mat contains a center mounted brake pedal and exclusive multi-zoned operator floor presence system, helping operators achieve a more natural stance during operation. The truck also contains a multifunction control handle which provides simultaneous control of travel and hydraulic functions, while the electric power steering enables a significant reduction in steer effort.
Built to handle 10,000 pounds of product, the MPR100VG enclosed end rider delivers the greatest lifting capacity of competitive end riders, while its 160-inch forks allow customers to transport up to four single-stacked or eight double-stacked pallets.www.yale.com

Creamer's CornerThe Captor, getting to know youMike Creamer
Since its inception, The Nilfisk Advance Captor has become an ever popular machine indeed. So, in this article I will attempt to bring my readers up to speed if you will on this machine.
First of all and foremost important, it is a sweeper scrubber. That seems to be what all the users are asking for these days. I suppose the logic here is that one can use the sweeper or scrubber or both simul-taneously. Another very nice advantage is that this model Captor is available in three very practical widths. They are 43", 48" and 54". So as it goes, the size of the machine is incorporated into the model name. And it goes like this: Captor 4300 (43"), Captor 4800 (48") and Captor 5400 (54".) For you parts department people, when it is time that your customer calls and needs parts for an Advance Captor, you will need more information as that is not enough. A good example of this would be the brushes, specifically the main sweeping broom. Believe you me, a 54" main broom will not fit on a Captor 4300. Another item that is associated with the width of the machine is the rear squeegee assembly, so therefore the squeegees themselves.
Make sure you know your width when order these parts, again they are 43", 48" or 54". This fact of different parts is not always the case. There are like parts on this machine whether it is a 4300 or 4800. Parts such as tires, hydraulics and engines in most cases are the same animal.
Before ever working on these machines make sure that all safety precautions is in force. Some of these are obvious but not to all peo-ple. So I will go over a few of them. I would advise using the Hopper Safety Support (KK) in place whenever maintenance is performed under or near a raised hopper. Another good habit is to always use
safety stands or blocks to support the machine. When performing this task always make sure that you are jacking
the machine in the proper jacking locations. See your manual for this information or just e-mail me and I will assist. One thing I will say is to never jack on the hopper. While I am on the topic of safety, transporting the machine, measures need to be brought forth such as securing tie downs. But what many do is to tie-down in wrong locations, which could become devastating. Again refer to the man-ual to the correct tie-down locations. Next, let me discuss a disabled machine. Remember that these machines are hydrostatic drive and cannot just be towed or pushed when they are disabled. The drive tire will not turn without this little clever devise. It is known simply as the tow valve. There is a lever that one turns to open the hydraulic flow to manual. This tow valve allows the tire to move and turn free-ly. Refer to your manual for the lever settings. There are many horror stories I could speak that occurred because of lack of safety measures. I will refrain you the drama of these accidents.
Get to know your Captor sweeper scrubber. With questions please e-mail me anytime about the Captor or for that matter, any other machine.

CHEP: Supply chain mapping unlocks savings & growth opportunities
Skip Miller, Vice President, Customer Service & Solutions for CHEP North America, told a gathering of consumer packaged goods industry executives that innovative supply chain solutions begin with a critical, end-to-end evaluation of supply chain.
“Details matter,” said Mr. Miller. “And the best way to identify small changes that can power savings and growth is for trading partners – manufacturers, retailers, growers and suppliers – to collaborate together to conduct a thorough evaluation of their supply chain to identify gaps, overlaps and inefficiencies. Once those inadequacies are identified through Supply Chain Mapping, experts can go to work to develop innovative solutions that help your company save money, be more efficient and sustainable and even enhance shopper satisfaction and loyalty.”
Mr. Miller outlined CHEP’s strategic approach to supply chain modernization with his presentation, “Details Matter: How Small Changes Can Power Savings & Growth,” at the Trading Partner Alliance Supply Chain Conference, a project of the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturers Association. During his pre-sentation, Mr. Miller outlined five case studies where CHEP collabo-rated with customer supply chain experts to identify inefficiencies in their supply chain and to develop cost-effective solutions:
• A tissue manufacturer that saved $320,000 annually by sourcing new, sustainable packaging for its primary packaging.
• A wholesale company that boosted dock space and transportation efficiency by eliminating multiple platforms and vendors.
• A beverage manufacturer that saved $500,000 annually by changing its primary and secondary packaging.
• A Canadian retailer saved $75,000 annually by streamlining the handling and transportation of fresh produce from the U.S., Mexico and South America.
Mr. Miller also told attendees that CHEP helped customers:• Save over $10 million by optimizing their supply chains.• Generate nearly $4.5 million in additional customer revenue
through transportation collaboration.• Eliminate almost 4 million empty miles and reduced their
environmental footprint by eliminating over 14 million pounds of CO2 emissions.
“Small changes really can translate into savings and growth, but it all begins with an honest and accurate Supply Chain Mapping approach,” concluded Mr. Miller. www.chep.com

When was the last time you checked out your own training program?Brian Colburn, Forklift Training Systems
Before joining Forklift Training Systems, I attended several local competitors’ operator training classes. I had hoped to pick up some good training tips, see the content of each class and learn about any weaknesses that might assist me if we went head to head for a cus-tomer. I would guess not many trainers have attended their competi-tor’s classes and I found it very enlightening.
I picked three programs at random to audit, but all were offered by dealerships representing major brands of forklifts. On the positive side, I did find some interesting statistics in several classes and got some ideas for a few new slides to add to our training. It was also interesting to watch how each trainer interacted with the classes, the questions they asked, props used, etc.
On the less positive side, I was fairly shocked to see how some of these programs were operating. Their downfalls are common and are worth noting for the benefit of our industry as a whole. Listed below are some of the things I witnessed as I attended the three classes; not each problem was present in each program.
1) One instructor started conducting a re-evaluation class, which was actually promoted as a certification class. When he found out a few operators had not been previously certified, and that one had never been on a forklift in his life, he continued on
with the same exact PowerPoint program saying he could cover all the topics they would likely need. The class claimed to cover type 1-6 forklifts in two hours of classroom.
2) In one class, I met an operator that had never driven a forklift in his life and struggled with the written test in English. I will never know how he did since he was asked to grade his own test during the classroom portion! During the hands-on por-tion, he was put on a forklift with no practice and promptly collapsed some shelving during his evaluation. Hands shak-ing, he parked the lift and the instructor told him he passed and would get his certification in the mail. Afterward I asked about the operator’s performance and the instructor comment-ed he had only failed a few people in over three years of being a full-time trainer.
3) One instructor made the comment “this is not a pass or fail thing,” it’s just training. I’m not here to make the call whether you pass or fail.” He followed that up by giving the class a 40 question test, 11 questions were taken and graded, but the other 29 he gave out the answers without having the class even attempt to answer them on their own! The final passing score reflected the total of 40 questions, not just the 11 that were legitimate.
4) Across the board, all three classes conducted the hands on portion at their dealerships and then issued certification cards to every student, which is NOT OSHA COMPLIANT. Only one instructor noted that the evaluations would have to be done again in the actual workplace and on their own forklifts. No paperwork was issued stating that the hands on evaluations needed to be done at the end users site and on their forklifts; therefore, the employers would assume, incorrectly and un-fortunately for them, that the training was complete. OSHA very clearly states in CPL 2-1.28A - Compliance Assistance for the Powered Industrial Truck Operator Training Standards: Can the evaluation required by (l)(2)(ii) be based entirely on observation of the operator in a training facility outside the workplace? No. The evaluation must take place in the workplace so that the evaluator can observe the operator under actual workplace conditions.
In summary, I thought training had come a lot further in the last 20 years, but I was very disappointed in some of what I encountered during the classes. I would suggest if you manage a forklift dealer-ship or safety training company that you stay in touch with what is happening at a grass roots level. Take your own classes once in a while, see what is happening and make sure your company is at least meeting the bare minimum OSHA requirements, if not more. Ask yourself, is this the type of training you would want for your son or daughter if they were learning to operate a 10,000 pound machine?

Hy-Tek Material Handling acquires two companies
Hy-Tek Material Handling, Inc. announces the acquisition of Gems Conveyor Installation, Inc. (GEMS) and Applied Handling Equipment Co. (AHECO). The acquisitions are expected to boost Hy-Tek’s 2016 sales to approximately $125 million. Columbus, Ohio-based Hy-Tek is the premier single-source provider of mate-rial handling solutions for industries including manufacturing, dis-tribution, retail, pharmaceutical, food, electronics and automotive. The acquisitions were announced by Hy-Tek CEO Sam Grooms.
A leading installer of welded construction conveyors, GEMS serves the biggest names in the parcel handling industry, including FedEx Ground, UPS and Amazon. GEMS also provides conveyer system installation services to distribution centers serving diverse industries nationwide. With offices in Greater Cincinnati, GEMS is overseen by principals Scott Meiman and Don McDonald, report-ing to Hy-Tek Integrated Systems (IS) President Tom Mann.
“The GEMS acquisition opens a new market with tremendous opportunity for Hy-Tek,” said Mann. “The welded construction conveyor business is a specialized niche with significant growth potential. Welded conveyor frames are designed to absorb the enormous beating the parcel handling industry requires. Couple GEMS’ welded construction expertise with Hy-Tek’s support, and the potential for growth is huge,” Mann said.
“GEMS has enjoyed a successful subcontractor relationship with Hy-Tek IS since opening our doors for business in 2001,” said Mei-man. “We’re delighted now to become part of the Hy-Tek family.”
Dayton, Ohio-based AHECO is known for its expertise in providing products and services for ergonomic material handling. Renamed the Applied Division of Hy-Tek Material Handling and overseen by principal Tim Colston, it serves the automotive, aerospace, food equipment, and general manufacturing industries. Notable clients include Honda of America Manufacturing, UTC Aerospace Systems, and Whirlpool Corp.
“We’re thrilled to join Hy-Tek Material Handling,” said Colston. “Our ergonomic storage and handling expertise, coupled with Hy-Tek’s resources and reach, create an unbeatable one-two punch.”
Having designed and delivered innovative material handling solu-tions for 53 years, Hy-Tek has a history of growth through strategic acquisitions. “GEMS gives Hy-Tek Integrated Systems the opportu-nity to become a leading installer of welded construction conveyor systems for the parcel handling industry. The Applied Division of Hy-Tek Material Handling broadens our ergonomic product offerings. We look forward to delivering sales, service, and support to growing numbers of manufacturers and distributors in the U.S. and abroad,” said Grooms. www.hy-tek.net

Drive cart provides reduction in push force with push of a button
Conceptual Innovations, an engineering, consulting, and custom manufacturing firm, announced the development of a customized motorized industrial cart that alle-viates the amount of force required to maneuver. The Drive Cart is a fully custom-built cart that can be
designed to move up to 1.5 tons of material. Engineers at Concep-tual Innovations, a subsidiary of Caster Concepts, developed an easy-to-use and accessible control panel with simple forward and reverse switches, an emergency stop button, battery meter and power light. The Drive Cart's tow hitch disengages the motor, allowing the cart to be towed by bigger vehicles. Since the Drive Cart is built to order; no two are alike in design and use. The drive cart is ideal for any industrial challenge that requires a powered cart. www.conceptual-innovations.com

Hyster-Yale Group hosts economic development forumHyster-Yale Group recently hosted an economic development
forum at its Sulligent, Ala. facility that was attended by more than 20 national, state and local elected officials including Alabama Congressman Robert Aderholt. The plant tour and discussion with company executives allowed lawmakers and business leaders to see firsthand the facility’s contribution to the local economy, and a chance to discuss issues and legislation affecting U.S. manufacturing.
“Hyster-Yale Group has been a part of the Sulligent, Ala. community for almost 50 years and we plan to be here for at least another 50 years,” said Chuck Pascarelli, President of the Americas for Hyster-Yale Group. “We have made significant additions to our Sulligent, Ala. facility over the past year, investing in new machining technology and a new transmission assembly line that supports skilled, good paying jobs for Northwest Alabama.”
Hyster-Yale Group is the largest employer in Lamar County, drawing workers from two states and 11 counties. Opened in 1970, the facility manufactures component parts, cylinders and transmissions for Hyster® and Yale® lift trucks sold around the world.
Congressman Robert Aderholt, R-Ala. pointed to the facility as an example of U.S. manufacturing success. He emphasized that lawmakers can help companies like Hyster-Yale Group succeed and
grow by limiting restrictive legislation. “Number one, we can stay out of the way and not cause burdensome regulations,” Aderholt said. “We also need to make sure we create the best environment to facilitate jobs in the South and especially here in Northwest Alabama.”
During the plant tour, lawmakers and economic development officials stopped at multiple stations on the production floor where individuals from various disciplines explained processes and products. This allowed forum attendees to gain a greater perspective on the types of jobs available at the facility, the skills required for each, and ways in which Hyster-Yale Group partners with secondary and technical schools to recruit and train a new generation of manufacturing associates. www.hyster-yale.com

Health Nudge
TVH is honored as a platinum fit-friendly worksite Poor diet, lack of exercise and other major risk factors for heart
disease and stroke are responsible for at least 25 percent of compa-nies’ healthcare costs. Is it any wonder that investing in the health of employees is one of the best decisions a company can make?
By creating a wellness environment, companies can help lower healthcare costs and protect their most important resource — their employees. In fact, research shows that for every $1 invested in worksite wellness, companies can receive up to $3 in return.
In January 2016, the American Heart Association recognized TVH as a Platinum Fit-Friendly Workplace and was chosen to receive the Worksite Innovation Award. Awareness, education and opportunity are three action areas TVH embraces with the Nudge Wellness Pro-gram. “With heart month awareness, employees participate in one of our three annual blood drives and next month we will offer CPR classes in which family members may also take part in. The focus is on engagement of a pro-active lifestyle and preventing heart disease” say Lucy DelSarto, TVH Health and Wellness Coach.
More than one in three adults has some form of cardiovascular disease. The good news is 80 percent of heart disease and stroke can be prevented. By embracing a few healthy lifestyle habits, you can significantly lower your risk of heart disease and improve your health. Protect yourself from heart disease, the nation’s number one killer, by following these helpful tips:
Get Active: Start small by incorporating physical activity into your daily routine more and more. Take the stairs instead of the eleva-tor, park at the farthest end of the parking lot or use your lunch break to take a quick walk.
Control Cholesterol: We all have cholesterol, a waxy substance in the bloodstream and in the cells of our body. But despite its reputa-tion, cholesterol isn’t all bad. In fact, it plays an important role in keeping us healthy. But a balance must be struck to prevent too much cholesterol in the blood. There are two types: the “good” kind (HDL) and the “bad” kind (LDL). High levels of bad cholesterol can clog your arteries, increasing your risk of heart
attack and stroke. This is where good cholesterol comes into play: HDL cleans out that bad cholesterol from the arteries.
Eat Better: Eating the right foods can help you control your weight, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. It’s important to choose fruits and vegetables over empty-calorie foods.
Manage Blood Pressure: One in three Americans has high blood pressure — yet one out of every five doesn’t even know they have it. High blood pressure, “the silent killer,” has no symptoms.
Lose Weight: Extra weight can do serious damage to your heart. Too much fat, especially around the belly, increases your risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. So give your heart a break by dropping the extra pounds — and keeping them off. Every little bit helps.
Reduce Blood Sugar: Diabetes can quadruple your risk of heart disease or stroke, so keeping blood sugar levels under control is cru-cial to preventing medical problems involving the heart and kidneys.
Stop Smoking: It’s time to kick the habit. Going smoke-free can help prevent not only heart disease and stroke, but also cancer and chronic lung disease. The payoff is almost immediate.
If you’d like to learn more about our programs or health and wellness at your workplace contact Lucy DelSarto at [email protected].
