Pericarditis, inflammation of the pericardium, roughensthe serous membrane surfaces.

Consequently, as the beating heart rubs against itspericardial sac, it creates a creaking sound (pericardialfriction rub) that can be heard with a stethoscope.

Pericarditis is characterized by pain deep to the sternum.Over time, it may lead to adhesions in which the visceraland parietal pericardia stick together and impede heartactivity.

  • In severe cases, the situation changes and large amounts of inflammatory fluid seep into the pericardial cavity. This excess fluid compresses the heart, limiting its ability to pump blood. This condition in which the heart is compressed by fluid is called cardiac tamponade (tamp-nd), literally, heart plug.

Physicians treat it by inserting a syringe into the pericardial cavity and draining off the excess fluid

    Heart Sounds

1st Sound (lub)Occurs as the AV valves close, signifies the point when ventricular pressure rises above atrial pressure.

The first sound tends to be louder, longer, and more resonant than thesecond

2nd Sound (dup)It is a short, sharp sound heard as the SL valves snap shut at the beginning of ventricular relaxation (diastole).
