MAGNIFICENT SEVEN: The Dodgers continue their final
homestand of the season (1-0) and play the Giants in the middle game
of their three-game series following last night’s 2-1, walk-off win. The
Dodgers are a season high-tying 20 games over .500 and, with 12 games
to play in the regular season, Los Angeles leads the Giants by 6.0 games
in the NL West, its largest lead of the season. The Dodgers’ magic
number to clinch the club’s fourth consecutive division title is seven.
Following the Giants series, the Dodgers will battle the Rockies for four
games before their season-ending trip to San Diego and San Francisco.
The Dodgers’ remaining 12 games are all against divisional opponents (5 vs. SF, 4 vs. COL, 3 vs. SD) and the club has
gone 37-27 (.578) against the NL West.
Since 2014, Los Angeles is just 25-27 overall against San Francisco, but has held the upper hand in the series in the
season’s second half. During the last three seasons, after the
All-Star break, the Dodgers are 13-5 against the Giants in
games following the Midsummer Classic, including an 8-2
mark at Dodger Stadium.
Eight of the 14 matchups between the Dodgers and Giants this year have resulted in one-run games, with the teams splitting
those contests, 4-4.
RALLY CAPS: The Dodgers rallied for two runs in the ninth inning
last night on consecutive hits by Andrew Toles, Corey Seager, Justin
Turner and Adrián González, whose RBI double gave Los Angeles its
sixth walk-off win of the season. Including last night, which marked the
10th walk-off hit of his career, Gonzalez’s last three walk-offs have all
come late in the season against the Giants (also: Sept. 12, 2013 and Aug.
31, 2015).
Toles started the rally with a pinch-hit single and came around to score the tying run. He’s posted a .389/.450/.611 slashline
as a pinch-hitter this year, going 7-for-18 with two doubles, a
triple, a walk and a hit by pitch in 20 pinch-hit appearances.
Turner, who is hitting .325 (37-for-114, 13th NL) with RISP, has driven in a run in six consecutive games, the longest streak
of the season by a Dodger and tied for the second-longest run
of his career (best: 7, May 14-21, 2011).
HILL-TOPPER: Rich Hill will make his fifth start as a Dodger (3-1,
1.48 ERA, 4 ER/24.1 IP) after suffering his first loss Thursday at
Arizona since May 1, snapping a career-best nine-game winning streak.
Hill has allowed just 10 hits (10-for-82, .122) while striking out 28
against just three walks in 24.1 innings as a Dodger, and overall, he leads
the Majors (min. 100.0 IP) with a .183 opponents’ batting average. He
also ranks among the Majors’ best in ERA (2.06, 4th), WHIP (0.96, 4th)
and strikeouts per 9.0 innings (10.58, 8th).
Tonight’s game will be a rematch of Los Angeles’ Aug. 24, 1-0 win over the Giants, when Hill allowed five hits in 6.0
scoreless innings in his Dodger debut to outduel Johnny Cueto,
who allowed just one run on four hits in 6.0 innings.
CALL HIM ROY: Dodger shortstop Corey Seager already holds the
Los Angeles rookie record for hits (182), runs (99) and doubles (39),
currently has the highest on-base percentage of any LA rookie (.372) and
remains in the mix for the top marks in batting average (.313, behind
Mike Piazza: .318, 1993), slugging percentage (.522, behind Piazza:
.561, 1993) and home runs (25, behind Joc Pederson: 26, 2015 and
Piazza: 35, 1993). Johnny Frederick holds the rookie franchise records
for hits (206), runs (127) and doubles (52), set in 1929.
Seager ranks among the NL leaders in hits (182, 4th), runs (99, 5th), doubles (39, 4th), total bases (304, 5th), batting average
(.313, 6th), multi-hit games (54, T-3rd), extra-base hits (68, T-
6th) and slugging pct. (.522, 10th).
A LOOK BACK: On this date in 1961, the Dodgers played their last
home game at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, beating the Chicago
Cubs, 3-2, in 13 innings. Sandy Koufax struck out 15 batters in a
complete-game victory and Ron Fairly stroked a two-out, walk-off
single in the 13th to bring home Wally Moon for the game-winning run.
The Dodgers played at the Coliseum from 1958-61, going 172-137,
before moving into their new ballpark at Chavez Ravine in 1962.
TOP GUNS: Los Angeles has gone 11-6 through 17 September games,
tied for the best record in the NL, on the strength of its pitching staff,
which has posted the lowest ERA in the Majors this month with a 2.55
mark (43 ER/151.2 IP). Overall, the Dodgers rank among the Major
League leaders in ERA (3.68, 4th), opponents’ batting average (.230,
2nd), strikeouts (1404, 1st), WHIP (1.18, 2nd) and shutouts (15, 1st).
The Dodger bullpen combined to hold the Giants scoreless in 3.0 innings of work last night and ranks second in the Majors
in both ERA (3.29, 197 ER/539.0 IP), opponents’ batting
average (.215) and WHIP (1.14).
Kenley Jansen ranks second in the NL with a career-high 45 saves and also places among the league’s best relievers in ERA
(1.81, 5th), opponents’ batting average (.150, 2nd), WHIP (0.65,
1st MLB) and strikeouts (97 in 64.2 innings, 4th).
JUST WHAT THE D.R. ORDERED: Dave Roberts has guided the
Dodgers to the brink of the postseason in his first year as manager, using
a franchise record-tying 55 total players and 31 different pitchers (both
records originally set last year) on a club that saw 28 different players
spend time on the DL, the most for any team in the last 30 years since at
least 1987.
Roberts is attempting to join Tommy Lasorda (1977) as the only rookie manager ever to lead Los Angeles to a division
title. Lasorda won the inaugural Manager of the Year Award
in 1983 before being honored a second time in 1988, and is the
only Dodger skipper to earn the distinction.
WE MISS YOU ALREADY: Vin Scully is scheduled to call just nine
more games for the Dodgers and the team will honor him in a number of
different ways during the homestand, starting with his final bobblehead
night tonight. The Dodgers will continue to salute the Hall of Famer with
Vin Scully Weekend, Sept. 23-25, which opens with Vin Scully
Appreciation Night and special pre-game ceremonies on Friday, Sept.
23 (7:20 p.m. vs. COL). The Dodgers will also issue a commemorative
limited edition coin celebrating Vin’s career on Saturday, Sept. 24 and,
on Sunday, Sept. 25, each fan will receive a special edition of the Dodger
Insider Magazine dedicated to the great broadcaster. More information
on Vin Scully Weekend can be found online at
Dodgers.com/LALovesVin.
Scully will hold a press conference on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 3:00 p.m. PT at Dodger Stadium.
The Dodgers are urging fans to arrive as early as possible for Scully Appreciation Night on Friday, Sept. 23. The
ceremonies begin at 6:30 p.m. and with heavy traffic expected,
the parking gates will open at 4:10 p.m. and the stadium gates
at 4:40 p.m.
DON’T MISS IT!: Limited single-game postseason tickets are on sale
now for potential home games for the National League Wild Card, the
NL Division Series and the NL Championship Series and can be
purchased online at Dodgers.com/postseason. The Dodgers are seeking
to reach the postseason in four consecutive seasons for the first time in
franchise history and could become the first team in the history of the
NL West to win four straight division titles.
