Learning to count, recognise numerals and understand and work with numbersrequires a good deal of repetition playing games is a good way to makethis repetition fun and motivating!

This game will be very effective for a small group of students to play, afterthey have been introduced to dot patterns, numerals and number words.

Before students play the game, introduce the game pieces to the students andlook at them together. Help them to become familiar with the format and rulesof the game.

Show the students the cards. Check that the students know the numbers andwords. Encourage the students if they have difficulty and reassure them thathelp will be provided during the game.

Try to make learning experiences and game playing as fun as possible. Theaim of the game is not to demand or test the students knowledge, but ratherto encourage and assist them in playing the game. Remember that the more

fun a student has the more times they will want to play thereby engaging inthe repetition needed to build solid and meaningful understanding and skills.

Playing games will not only help your students mathematical skills but willassist them learning to co-operate, concentrate, follow rules, engage with otherpeople and perhaps more importantly win and lose.

Use the game cards in the ways outlined on our instruction sheet, but alsoadapt and use them creatively. They could even be used as flashcards for aquick daily drill.

It is essential that children learn to instantly recognise dot patternarrangements (it is called subitising), in order to move to more challengingmathematicalconcepts like addition and subtraction. The aim is for children tobe able to retain a mental image of the dot patterns to assist in computation.

1 set of dot patterns cards 0-51 set of numeral cards 0-51 set of number word cards 0-5Purpose:

Students will recognise a dot pattern instantly for numbers zero to five,

recognise numerals zero to five and read number words zero to five.

How to Play:Students match each dot card with a numeral card and a word card.

There are a few ways games to play with these cards:

Have all the cards spread out in front of the players, and players take itin turn to find matching cards.

Spread just the numeral and word cards face up, in front of the players.Put the dot cards in a pile. Players take a dot card from the pile and thengo about finding the matching cards to the card they picked up.

Play with the dot cards and the numeral cards. Spread them face down infront of the players. Ask players to select two cards, and turn them over.If they are a matching pair, they are able to keep them to the end of thegame. Play continues until all cards have been matched.

Play with all cards. Play snap. Each player is dealt an equal number ofcards. Players sit in a circle and take turns to put one of their cards down, face up, in the centre of the circle. If a players card matches the one putdown by the player before them, all players may snap their hand downto claim the matching pair. The player, who claims the pair, is able tokeep these cards until the end of the game.
