SHS UIL Academics Team Continues to RollThis year as been a special one for SHS UIL and Saturday was no different. Once again the Matador UIL team brought home the gold! SHS placed 3rd out of 15 schools in the Wimberley Invitational Sweepstakes by receiving themost awards for all events combined. Sharon Booth, UIL Coordinator, writes that, “Our Matadors have been unstoppable! All of these fine students worked hard to make the win possible – everyone really contributes to the overall success of this great organization!” SHS is proud to support student participation in UIL Academics because it enhances classroom learning, prepares students for college and work, and also develops self-esteem and self-confidence. We applaud the teachers who work with our students and encourage all Matadors to explore the opportunities for growth that UIL Academics offers. Special congratulations goes to the following teams who placed this weekend:

Juvenile Violence Expert Talks with Students It’s a situation we’re all familiar with. The student sitting by himself at lunch. The questionable social media post that makes you a little uncomfortable. Seeing the signs of depression or substance abuse, but not knowing how to confront it. These are issues that are often swept under the rug, but according to public speaker and true crime writer Phil Chalmers (pictured right with students interviewd for this story), they need to be met head-on. Chalmers is a self-proclaimed “leading authority on juvenile homicide and juvenile mass murder.” Last week, thanks to Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke, Chalmers made the rounds in our area with presentations directed toward teaching students, parents and law enforcement how to prevent dangers such as teen violence, risky social media interactions, bullying, suicide and substance abuse. “My goal is, ultimately, to save lives,” Chalmers said. “What makes these guys tick? How can we save kids, how can we protect people? That’s what I’m working toward answering.” Read the whole story HERE: http://seguingazette.com/news/article_1e95d2c2-0ecd-11e8-8500-4f70e987d91f.html
Sports Round Up BASKETBALL- The Seguin boys basketball team fell short of a UIL playoff berththis season, but the Matadors concluded their home schedule on a positive note Friday night with a 57-46 win over Lockhart at Goldie Harris Gym. Seguin forward Trystin Silas led all scorers with 17 points, and Michael Mickles reached double figures as well with 13. Evan Head contributed eight points, Arturo Hernandez seven, Christian Martinez six, Justice Head four, and Brian Cash two. The Matadors are 5-10 in District 26-5A, 12-20 overall, and wraps up the season Tuesday at Dripping Springs. The Lady Matadors ended their season with a 51-25 loss to the Boerne-Champion Lady Chargers on Tuesday at Goldie Harris Gym. The Lady Matadors finished the 2017-18 season with a record of 10-22 overall and 4-10 in district.
SOCCER - The Seguin girls soccer team dropped to 0-4 in District 26-5A Friday night with a 9-4 road loss to Medina Valley in Castroville. Jade Ross scored two goals for the Matadors, while Ashley Burnett and Merary Contreras each found the back of the net once. Medina Valley's Briana Peterson produced a match-high five goals on the night. The boys also suffered their fourth district loss, falling at home to Medina Valley 2-1. Both Seguin teams continue the 26-5A schedule Tuesday with matches against Marble Falls. The girls play at Matador Stadium, the boys on the road, and both contests begin at 6:45 p.m. Source: SeguinToday.com
