CONTENTS WHY CHEMISTRY IN
IIT GUWAHATI
Chemistry is a dynamic subject that
is constantly evolving to meet the
need of the society. Department of
chemistry of IIT Guwahati has both
distinguished and outstanding repu-
tation for research covering most of
the areas of Chemistry. It is one of
the largest research institutes in
India producing potential Chemistry
post graduates per year. Our aca-
demic programme is vividly meant
to acquaint students with basic topic
and its applications of the subject.
There is also a great balance be-
tween theory and laboratory prac-
tices in the educational semester
courses. The department also col-
laborates with various educational
and industrial groups. The main ob-
jective is to flourish new, zeal and
capable student to handle the ap-
plied and industrial requirements.

FOREWORD
3
The chemistry dept. in IIT Guwahati was introduced in the year 1995. Since then it holds a good record in basic chemistry with skill in experimental and theoretical areas. IIT Guwahati provides a uniquely stimulating environment for both scien-tific and industrial research. Immersed in this environment of scientific discovery , the post graduate program has been designed to develop students’ ability to apply independent, creative, scientific thoughts in industrial research and cultivate habits of enquiry that will ensure continued intellectual develop-ment through out their careers.
The department is enriched with 33 experienced faculty
members including 10 professors, 8 associate professors
and 15 assistant professors. They are awarded with national
and international awards like Fellow of Royal Society of
Chemistry, DAE Young Scientist Award, Swarnajayanti
Fellowship, INSA Young Scientist Award in Chemical
Science, Young Career Award in Nano Science and Tech-
nology, Young Investigators Award (RGYI Scheme), Materi-
als Research Society of India Medal etc.
