November 19th, 2013 VIA EMAIL College of Lake County 19351 West Washington Street Grayslake, Illinois 60030 Re: College of Lake County Master Plan Projects Architect’s Project Number: 214011.00 Southlake Chemistry Lab Programming Meeting #3 Minutes Summary of the Southlake Chemistry Lab Programming Meeting #3 Minutes held at 9:30 am on November 15th, 2013 at College of Lake County-Southlake Campus, Room V120. These notes record our understanding of items discussed and decisions made at this meeting. Please notify us within seven (7) calendar days of any necessary additions or corrections. PERSONS IN ATTENDENCE
Viki Cvitkovic, Dean, Southlake Campus College of Lake County (CLC) Nick Terlap, Facilities Lead Maintenance College of Lake County (CLC) Mel Israel, Campus Operating Coordinator College of Lake County (CLC) Ahmad Audi, Nanotechnology Department Chair & Professor of Chemistry College of Lake County (CLC) Mary Urban, Professor of Chemistry College of Lake County (CLC) Steve Holman, Dean, Grayslake Campus College of Lake County (CLC) Ted Johnson, Construction Manager College of Lake County (CLC) Jeff Sronkoski, Principal Legat Architects (Legat) Burcin Moehring, Director of Science and Technology Legat Architects (Legat) Jackie Rutter, Intern Architect Legat Architects (Legat) ITEMS DISCUSSED
1. The group reviewed the updated space list summary and the 3 options with associated cost
estimates.
a. Legat team informed the group that the 3 options show different layouts but all have
the same square footage, 2,067 square feet. This square footage had been allocated for
this project in the master plan in order to stay within the established budget by the CLC
team. All the options are estimated to be over the project budget.
b. Option 1: Third floor renovation.
i. This option includes a new science teaching lab, a prep lab and a chemical/mini
stock room created on the 3rd floor.
ii. Nano Lab remains in its current place.
iii. No faculty/lab assistant office is provided.
iv. No Instrument lab is provided.
v. The CLC team stated that this option does not accommodate their needs.
c. Option 2: Second floor addition on stilts.
i. Ahmad Audi indicated that the new teaching lab and the existing prep lab
should be adjacent. If the Biology Lab and Chemistry Lab will be sharing the
College of Lake County Master Plan Project Southlake Chemistry Lab Programming Meeting November 19th, 2013 Page 2 of 4
same Prep Lab, CLC team requested the Prep Room to be 1.5 times larger than
the existing Prep Lab.
ii. Ahmad Audi noted the office should be called Faculty/Lab Assistant Office.
iii. The CLC team indicated that since this option has the instrument lab, prep
room, and storage room much smaller than the required size, this option does
not meet their needs and is not acceptable.
d. Option 3: Renovation and addition on R building.
i. Ahmad Audi stated that the existing Nano program works well in the existing
area since teaching takes place in the adjacent classroom space. Therefore the
new layout would not work because the Nano Lab would be separated from the
chemistry teaching lab.
ii. Due to limited square footage issues, no designated instrument lab is shown in
this option. The group agreed that an instrument lab is necessary to teach Chem
125 and almost all Chemistry classes.
iii. The group considered various ways to have reduced lab support spaces and
decrease the square footage needed in order to meet the budget.
1. Steve Holman suggested to eliminate a separate lab assistant office and
to designate a space in the Prep Room for the lab assistant. Ahmad
Audi expressed a concern that the lab assistant storing their personal
belongings or eating in this area, which is near chemicals.
2. Mary Urban noted that when the group visited other colleges, students
at some institutions stored things in student drawers.
3. The group considered if some instruments could be stored more
densely and efficiently. Ahmad Audi informed the group that some
instruments like infrared and HPLC cannot be moved frequently.
iv. Ted Johnson suggested an option where the existing conference room be
renovated into the chemistry teaching lab and the new addition would consist
of storage, prep lab, and instrument lab.
1. Jeffery Sronkoski and Burcin Moehring informed the group that this
layout would most likely not meet fire the safety codes, which are more
stringent in science labs. Jeff Sronkoski also stated that fume hoods in
the existing space with low ceilings would be difficult for the HVAC
distribution and costly.
v. The group prefers the teaching lab to be closer to the existing building. Jeffery
Sronkoski pointed out that it is more cost effective if the existing transformer
remains at the current location. Ahmad Audi and Mary Urban noted that Nano
Lab at the existing location might not be the best option because the vibrations
from the transformers could be the reason for errors in testing.
College of Lake County Master Plan Project Southlake Chemistry Lab Programming Meeting November 19th, 2013 Page 3 of 4
vi. Ahmad Audi indicated that the existing Nano Lab is too small for the number of
students he would like to teach in future and requested the new lab to be larger
than the current one.
vii. CLC team suggested to have the Nano/Instrument Lab to be shown where
Chemistry Prep Lab is shown in Option 3.
viii. The CLC team indicated that if the Chemistry Teaching Lab will be on the first
floor, it is not desirable to share the Prep Lab with the Biology Lab on the
second floor. Users stated that it would be unsafe to transport chemicals
between the two floors.
e. The CLC faculty agreed that their needs would not accommodated with any of the
options shown, which were all driven by the budget. The CLC faculty stated that the
budget was not prepared considering all the needs and the requirements of the science
programs. Jeffrey Sronkoski and Ted Johnson will review the budget, the scope of the
work, and the requirements provided by the user groups with the leadership at CLC at a
later date.
2. The group reviewed the completed Room Detail requirement survey form for the Chemistry
Teaching lab.
i. Chemistry Teaching Lab
1. Ahmad Audi asked to have cup sinks at the student island benches.
2. Users prefer electrical pedestals and lab support stands at the island
benches.
3. A bench top with an expandable panel to be pulled out for lap taps is
preferred.
ii. Burcin Moehring asked the group to fill out the detail requirement survey forms
for the Instrument Lab, Nano Lab, and Prep Lab before the next meeting.
3. Burcin Moehring presented examples of chemistry lab types, layouts, trends and examples from
the tours of various science facilities.
a. The group favors round tables for groups of four students which enhance collaborative
work.
b. When Jeffery Sronkoski asked the group to explain the college’s science teaching style,
Ahmad Audi stated that he teaches classes in a variety of group sizes, from individual to
large groups, in order to expand students’ skills. Therefore the teaching space should be
flexible and adaptable.
c. The group briefly reviewed space adjacencies. The CLC faculty prefers Scheme A
(attached).
4. The group agreed to that the next meeting will be at 10 am on Friday, December 13th.
5. Meeting adjourned.
