Message from Program Chair
Structural Engineering Design program (SED) at CEPT University was conceived in
1996 with an aim of providing students with sound principles of structures and their
application in real-world design problems. With a unique blend of theory and practice, it
offers unparalleled excellence through the rich array of courses designed by core faculty
members and practicing professionals. Starting from elemental level design to system level
design along with detailing of structures, our students are exposed to this rigorous journey
through models, discussions and problem solving approaches incorporating national and
international standards.
Students are trained to be professionals as the projects assigned to them simulate office
like situation where each student takes ownership of his/her project. The state of art and
creativity in designed projects are excelled through periodical reviews by architects and
structural engineers, which adds to deeper understanding of inter-connection of both
disciplines.
CEPT University provides a nurturing environment to the students to learn new skills and
gain practical experience giving access to latest software and work shop along with multi-
disciplinary learning opportunities. Structural engineering being a vast field, this program
creates a whole range of opportunities to plan their future career in designing Bridges,
Marine structures, Power Plants, Residential and Commercial buildings. Students also
choose to remain in academics and pursue further research.
With a combination of sound analytical background and practical approach, each student
of this course is well equipped with the required professional skills and can be the finest
choice for any design office.

Program Description
In the recent era, a wide gamut of ambitious structures is being designed in the world.
Structural Engineering aims to connect the demands of geometry, materials and forces for
various types of structures. The SED Program at the Faculty of Technology, CEPT University
is a reputed program that attracts civil engineers interested in the profession of Structural
Engineering. One of the major objectives of the program is to develop competent structural
engineers who are industry ready to work in the profession.
The M. Tech. program in Structural Engineering Design (MSED), having duration of two
years, is a pioneering program that offers studio pedagogy wherein live projects under
various categories are solved, designed and detailed by students under the guidance of
faculty members. The range of structures designed by students include low and high rise
residential and commercial buildings, bridges, water tanks, industrial structures such as
chimneys, silos and marine structures. The program faculty comprises highly educated core
faculty members and eminent visiting faculty members. The graduates of this program are
either placed at leading consulting firms or have also started their own practice.
The program has official understanding with the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) at
Gandhinagar, Gujarat which facilitates the students to gain an edge of seismology through
expert sessions, visits and collaborative research. The department hosts periodically the
meeting and gathering of the Indian Association of Structural Engineers (Gujarat State
Centre) that helps all structural engineering students, academicians and professionals to
stay up to date in matters of the Indian standards and professional practice implications.
Sometimes the students go out of the country for summer winter schools / research /
exchange studies to reputed organizations and universities.
Resource wise, the Structural Engineering Design program is supported by studio type
classrooms, material testing and structural laboratory and one of the best libraries that
houses many reputed journals and books in the domain.

Program structure & Curriculum
Curriculum
The two-year program leading to award of Master of Technology in Structural Engineering
Design is designed to enhance skills & knowledge of structural design for the students and
working professionals in the construction and civil engineering sector.
The program aims to train a Student in practical art and philosophy of structural design.
It also gives the insight into investigation, assessment and strengthening of the damaged
structures. The program also engages the students into the design of ongoing important
industrial structures such as chimneys, silos, water tanks, bridges and ports.
The program focuses on building professional capacities and therefore it emphasizes on
‘studios’. The studio based courses wherein all students work on live projects and come
up with their own transformed structural systems, analysis and design. The professionals
from eminent design offices are invited to teach the students and share their experiences.

1st Semester Design Studio-1 (Design of low rise buildings under gravity loads):
This course contains design for RCC/ steel structures starting with historical development
to the limit state theory. The students have to study the structural systems of different type
of structures like residential, commercial, industrial and historical buildings. The students
will finalize the structural system of the building given and will have to design the whole
building and will have to prepare neat drawings of slab, beams and columns and footings
and various connections.
Advanced Methods of Analysis:
The aim of this subject is to understand the behaviour of the structures through advanced
matrix methods, which are used in all the popular computer software. Structures like
frame, truss, and grids are analyzed using Matrix methods (stiffness method and flexibility
method).
Earthquake engineering:
The course aims to provide students concept of structural dynamics in general with an
understanding of seismology, damaging aspects of earthquake, causes of earthquakes
and the potential consequences of earthquakes on civil infrastructures. The course also
touches upon how to design, analyze, construct and maintain structures so as to resist
earthquake up to the expectations, in acquiescence with Indian building code provisions.

2nd Semester
The objective of the course is to enable the students to analyze and design multi-storey
structures (RCC/steel) independently including gravity as well as lateral loads. The case
studies pertaining to failures due to earthquake will be discussed and salient features
related to detailing of the elements will be highlighted. Students will be working on
assigned individual project and will be designing and detailing the assigned project.
Studio II: Design of high rise buildings:
The objective of the course is to enable the students to analyze and design multi-storey
structures (RCC/steel) independently including gravity as well as lateral loads. The case
studies pertaining to failures due to earthquake will be discussed and salient features
related to detailing of the elements will be highlighted. Students will be working on
assigned individual project with specific problem statement and IS clause. Students will
be designing the assigned project considering steel and reinforced cement concrete and
thereby will be able to understand the difference with respect to design and detailing of
utilizing both materials.
Advanced Design of Reinforced concrete Structures:
This course covers the advanced methods of analysis, design and detailing of RCC elements
that are sometimes the necessary components for the complex industrial structures or are
to be designed as special structural systems. Behavioral aspect, Analysis and design of
combined footings, raft foundation, pile foundation, staircases, deep beams, corbels, flat
slabs and retaining walls will be dealt during these sessions. Also the serviceability criteria
of deflections and crack widths in reinforced concrete structures will be taught during
these sessions. All the designs will be supported with neat detailed sketches as well as
models of placing of reinforcement in the same.
Advanced Design of Steel Structures:
The course aims to develop in-depth understanding of advanced structural principles of
strength, stability, serviceability and lateral torsional buckling in steel design using plastic
analysis. The course continues steel design topics dealt in semester I, covering advanced
structural steel elements and broader areas of their applications.

CEPT has been a great boon to my life. As it proved to be a milestone to where I am placed today. The practical learning under the great structural designers connected to the best Firms proved to be beneficial to us. Today I am placed at India’s best Structural Design Firm Mahendra Raj Consultants at Delhi because of the hard work that we invested at CEPT. Apart from gaining confidence, the best part of CEPT is the opportunity to interact with the students of different departments under the same roof to understand the insight of habitat related issues.
CEPT- A happy dream that came true! It gave me the stories for my life and we started here with learning together but ended with living together. Here, with the expertise of professionals & dedication of core faculty; we came up with solving problems but not to learn solutions. CEPT is not about the days we spent there but about the nights that we lived and learned together. To sum this up, In between “what is Beam?” to “Progressive Collapse” CEPT happened.
CEPT proved to be pool of opportunities for me. The curriculum was structured in such a way that it enabled me to set a strong foundation in my fundamentals and build further by learning troubleshoot real life problems encountered by professionals. It was an amalgamation of core academics and practice that made my transition from campus to industry smooth. Apart from the variety and abundant knowledge I got from my regular classes, I had great opportunities to meet people from diverse backgrounds and interdisciplinary lectures. I am forever grateful for the visiting and core faculty at CEPT for sharing abundant knowledge & expertise. To sum it up, CEPT was whole lot of fun and learning that sure trained me for life!
