Our Master of Teaching is unique. Our innovative curriculum brings together theory and practice in a way that will give you powerful insights into children and young people, and how they learn.

We are the only teaching degree in Australia to use a genuine clinical framework. As a Teacher Candidate you will:

• become an active member of a school or early childhood community from early in your studies, with close support from school and university mentors throughout. This means you can connect what you learn at university with what you learn while teaching, in a similar way to trainee doctors or nurses in a training hospital

• develop the professional skills to assess and diagnose students’ individual learning needs, and to work with learners of all abilities.

Our graduates feel very well prepared for teaching and are highly sought after by schools and early childhood services.

The Master of Teaching difference

Pari Gupte on placement at Malvern Central School

Annika Clarebrough on placement at the Katha Lab School, Delhi

Our courses offer flexibility, allowing you to choose between coursework or research pathway options in your final year.

The coursework option includes a capstone experience and electives to expand your professional knowledge in areas of relevance in schools today.

You may also be eligible to complete an enriched placement* and spend time working with indigenous or disadvantaged communities in outback or rural Australia, overseas, or in an alternative setting, such as a hospital, museum, or art gallery.

In the research pathway option, you will learn how to plan, implement, interrogate and disseminate research in education, preparing you for further research degrees with us. *Subject to meeting academic requirements.

Qualification outcomesGraduates of the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood) and the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) are eligible to apply for registration as an early childhood teacher with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). This qualifies you to work in children’s services in Australia with children aged birth-five years.

If you intend to teach outside Victoria, we recommend you check registration requirements with the relevant body.

You may also choose to pursue a career in areas like:

• children’s services coordination • early childhood research • policy formation • quality regulation and assessment• early intervention for children with special needs.

Early ChildhoodThe Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) is designed with a new type of early childhood professional in mind – one who operates in a multi-disciplinary field involving care, education and health. This course focuses on learning and teaching for children aged birth–eight years.

StructureThis program may be undertaken through either full-time or part-time study. It comprises four full-time semesters over two years, or up to seven semesters over three and a half years in the part-time option. You can choose to exit after the first 150 points with a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood), which will qualify you to teach in early childhood settings (birth-five years).

Alternatively, you can continue to complete the Masters, and choose to follow either the coursework or research pathway option:

1. Coursework option: complete a capstone project and three electives (with the option of an enriched placement)

2. Research pathway option: if you achieve an average of 75 per cent or above in the first year, you can research an area of interest via a substantial research project, as well as taking an elective (with the option of an enriched placement). Completion of this option allows progress to a PhD (subject to meeting academic requirements).

4

PrimaryThe Master of Teaching (Primary) qualifies you to teach across all primary years as a generalist teacher, with in-depth knowledge in literacy and mathematics, and a specialist area.

StructureThe program consists of four full-time semesters completed over two years (200 points). The first three semesters focus on your development as a primary teacher, equipping you to teach across the curriculum and personalise learning to meet students’ individual needs. You will become familiar with different approaches to teacher-led research and based on your previous studies and semester results, you can choose to specialise in one of the following areas: the Arts, Health and Physical Education, Humanities, Languages, Literacy, Mathematics, Science, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

In the second year, you will choose one of the following options: • Coursework option: complete a capstone project, core subjects and an elective (with the option of an enriched placement)

• Research pathway option: if you achieve an average of 75 per cent or above in the first year, you can research an area of interest via a substantial research project, while finishing 12.5 points of core subjects. Completion of this option allows progress to a PhD (subject to meeting academic requirements).

Career outcomesThe Master of Teaching (Primary) will enable you to apply for provisional registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as a primary teacher. If you intend to teach outside Victoria, we recommend you check registration requirements with the relevant body.

You may also choose to pursue a career in a related field, such as:• policy formation• education research• assessment and evaluation• youth health and wellbeing.

Anthony Curnow, grade 1 teacher at Footscray City Primary School, Master of Teaching (Primary) graduate

“Without doubt, the most valuable aspect of the course was having the opportunity to bridge the gap between cutting edge educational research and how this materialises in the everyday classroom. The clinical teaching model is the backbone of my teaching practice, enabling me to effectively meet the individual needs of all children in my class. Given that a huge component of the course included practical placements in schools, I was able to build a suitcase of teaching strategies to support me in my graduate year.”

SecondaryThe Master of Teaching (Secondary) prepares you to be a highly effective teacher with specialist knowledge in two learning disciplines. You will complete 200 points of study over two years full-time, or you may have the option of accelerating your studies to complete the course in 18 months*.

StructureThe first three semesters focus on teaching in learning areas with a strong emphasis on clinical teaching, preparing you to become an independent teacher who is able to evaluate the impact of your teaching.

In the second year, you will choose one of the following options:

• Coursework option: complete a capstone project, a core subject and two electives (with the option of an enriched placement)

• Research pathway option: if you achieve an average of 75 per cent or above in the first year, you can research an area of interest via a substantial research project, while taking a 6.25 point core subject. Completion of this option allows progress to a PhD (subject to meeting academic requirements).

*Students who achieve an average of 75% in the first semester may be eligible to accelerate and complete the program in 18 months (subject to meeting progression requirements). Students wishing to undertake the research option, or enriched placements, will need to complete the two year program.

Grace Wong, maths teacher at Kambrya College, Master of Teaching (Secondary)

“The clinical teaching model taught me to constantly evaluate the impact of my lessons to meet the needs of each student. During the 60 days of teaching placements I learned the necessary skills for classroom behaviour, how to deal with parents, as well as resources and ideas for my learning areas, chemistry and maths. This really helped me get through my first year of teaching.”

Career outcomesThe Master of Teaching (Secondary) will enable you to apply for provisional registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as a secondary teacher. If you intend to teach outside Victoria, we recommend you check registration requirements with the relevant body. You may also choose to pursue a career in a related field, such as:• policy formation• education research• assessment and evaluation.

Following a rigorous selection process, we match applicants who have the right mix of outstanding academic results, experience and aptitude to teach in secondary schools around Victoria.

Support Throughout the three year program, you will be provided with an exceptionally strong support network of mentors and coaches to help you transition into leading a classroom. You will continue your academic studies alongside teaching so you can constantly apply what you are learning.

Career outcomesThe Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship will qualify you for full registration with the VIT as a secondary teacher.

If you intend to teach outside Victoria, we recommend you check registration requirements with the relevant body.

Structure The program consists of 200 credit points of study taken over three years while you are employed and teaching at a secondary school. You will complete 150 points over the first two years while teaching on a reduced teaching load (0.8 FTE), enabling time for university studies. In your final year, you will transition to full-time employment (1.0 FTE) while completing 50 points through capstone studies and electives, or a research project.

Study is structured around five campus-based intensives with additional study conducted online throughout each year. The course starts in November with a six-week study program and school induction. You will then commence employment in a school the following January from the beginning of term 1.

Jodie O’Connor, maths and science teacher,Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship candidate at Footscray City College

“I really appreciated having the opportunity to have classes that are entirely my own. I felt the flexibility and freedom to try different things without fear, but also with the support from my school, mentor, transition coach and staff at the University. As I made changes in the classroom I had the opportunity to analyse their effects and adjust my teaching when necessary – that was a very important part.”

Secondary learning area guidelinesTo be eligible for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) or Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship, you must have completed disciplines within your previous studies that satisfy the requirements for two learning areas.

Literacy and numeracy test

The Commonwealth Government of Australia now requires all students undertaking initial teacher education courses in Australia to pass a literacy and numeracy test in order to obtain their degree.

Administrated by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), this test will ensure all new teachers have the literacy and numeracy skills required to meet the demands of teaching.

Attaining a satisfactory standard in the literacy and numeracy test is a hurdle requirement for successful completion of the course.

Students have up to three opportunities to pass the test, which will be offered at certain times throughout the year.

Students will be prompted to register for the test once enrolled in the Master of Teaching.

For more information, please visit the Government’s Students First website: studentsfirst.gov.au/teacher-quality

International studentsYou will enjoy our location on the northern edge of Melbourne’s vibrant city centre, with a host of cafés, restaurants, shops, theatres, galleries and bars just a short walk away.

We offer a supportive environment for international students, and our Student Wellbeing and Support Officer can provide information and referrals to help you settle into student life here.

You will be spending a significant amount of time in Australian classrooms from an early stage in your studies. If you study primary or secondary teaching, we run a free program called ‘Introduction to Contemporary Australian Schooling’ to help equip you with an understanding of the cultural and organisational aspects of Australian schools, and better prepare you for your practical placement.

Larissa Wall, teacher at Sydenham Community Kindergarten, Master of Teaching (Early Childhood)

“This course gave me the confidence to enter the workforce armed with the tools, knowledge, and experience necessary to plan and implement an effective early childhood program. The practical nature of the course allowed me to observe and learn from many different teaching mentors over the two year course, which I believe gave me a great perspective, and helped me to develop my own personal teaching style.”
