VALUE AND IMPACT:THE NEED FOR EXTRAORDINARY LEADERSHIP

The value and impact of extraordinary leadership in an organization cannot be over stated. Author Dr. John C. Maxwell says everything rises and falls on leadership. This seems to be especially true in the world of independent schools. We often speak of the value proposition in our schools and how that impacts program, enrollment, philanthropic support, our perception in the community and much more. But what is it that determines the success of these features of schools? What is it that enables schools to live out their mission and thrive even under difficult circumstances? I believe the answer lies in excep-tional leadership.

It is with this in mind that I am grateful to Trevecca Nazarene University for their vision and belief in the value and impact of independent schools by committing to the establishment of the Master of Organizational Leadership (MOL) that emphasizes independent school leadership. Trevecca recognizes the important work these schools are doing in preparing tomorrow’s leaders. Trevecca has a remarkable track record of providing programs that meet the needs of those who seek to serve as leaders in numerous professions.

My expectation for this program is that it will not only meet but also exceed the needs of those of you who serve as administrators, teachers, and coaches in independent schools. Many of you are seeking graduate level leadership training but your options are few. Now, with the introduction of Trevecca’s MOL program, you have an opportunity to enhance your skills, knowledge, and career prospects. Plus, you will have the unique opportu-nity to be taught and mentored by some of the most successful leaders in independent schools as well as the exceptional leadership faculty at Trevecca. Ultimately your stu-dents at these great schools will be the beneficiaries of Trevecca’s dedication to service and leadership.

W. B. Yeats said education is less about filling a pail and more about lighting a fire. At Trevecca we believe this statement speaks to the critical role independent schools have in developing our future leaders. This program will fan the flames of this fire with inspiration and action.

Independent schools thrive on having the very best leaders.Trevecca’s Master of Organizational Leadership with an emphasis on Independent School Leadership may be exactly the program you need to reach your leadership goals.

Sincerely,

William R. Mott, Ph.D.Coordinator MOL Independent School Leadership Program

The landscape for Pre – K-12 education is changing. Charter schools impact the way families are make decisions about their children’s education. The scope and structure ofcharter schools suggest that those working in this environ-ment would also benefit from MOL-ISL degree program. If you are working as an administrator, teacher, and/or coach, this master’s degree may be exactly what you need to make a difference at your charter school.

I am a “satisfied customer” when it comes to Trevecca Nazarene University! Several years ago, I completed a master’s degree in administration and supervision through Trevecca’s Saturday program for educators. I had a great experience. My adjunct professors were school administrators—just as I was. This was not “ivory tower” theory. Their examples went like this: “Let me tell you what happened in my school this week” or, at times, “Let me tell you what happened in my school YESTERDAY.” These men and women were practitioners. . . and their examples were germane to a young administrator like me. Throughout the entire fifteen months of my master’s program, I was the ONLY private school administrator in any of my classes. This was not a problem—and I met many wonderful public school educators. . .some of

whom remain friends 20+ years later. Still, I was thrilled to learn that Trevecca had begun a program geared toward independent school leadership. I think that this focus will pay dividends in our area’s independent schools for a long time to come. May this course of study benefit today’s aspiring administrators—just like my Trevecca experience benefitted me in the late 1980s. Keep up the good work, Trevecca!

RICHARD B. ANDERSON, HEADMASTERCHRIST PRESBYTERIAN ACADEMYNASHVILLE, TENNESSEE

For independent schools to fulfill their missions and reach their potential, leaders must emerge from within the system and be trained in excellence. Through the MOL program, Trevecca has recognized and responded to this challenge. I am delighted to see this opportunity embrace the unique focus of the independent school setting.
