6.1 Justify the Proposed Change:

The changes are necessary to move the Faculty towards accreditation for the MBA, and to make the MBA more relevant to the needs of students, to incorporate changes in the courses offered by the Faculty of Informatics and Communication and to use the resources of the Faculty of Business and Law more efficiently.

Accreditation requires a broad business core incorporating courses such as accounting, finance and law which are not currently part of core.

Some courses currently offered overlap or are outdated and the change in structure incorporates revised courses to overcome this problem.

The Faculty of Informatics and Communication has revised their programs requiring us to change the requirements for specialisations in information systems, e-Business, and management accounting.

Environmental stewardship should be removed as a specialisation from the MBA because of low enrolments in both the specialisation and the courses offered for this specialisation.

7. State any implications or resource issues for the Faculty, students and other Faculties/Divisions, eg: (staff, library, computing, equipment, space and distance education support).

Staff: Redesign of programs and associated courses has reduced the number of courses to be offered to students. This is result in fewer demands on staff for teaching after the initial transition period. However there will be substantial work to revise courses both to ensure that we are moving towards what is required for accreditation in terms of content and to improve the general standard of courses offered. The other staff implication is in relation to specific areas of expertise. The revisions put more emphasis on commerce courses. The Heads of Departments are aware of these changes.

Page 7: Master of Business Administration

Library: In general, resources required are no more than at present. However, there is lack of access to some journals considered very important in areas which we have identified as areas of specialisation.

No changes envisaged in requirements for computing, equipment, space and distance education support.

10. Statement from all other Heads of Campus where applicable, to indicate that they have had the opportunity to review this change of program, and indicating their support for, and where appropriate, their ability to resource, the delivery of the proposed program:

13 Statement of Accreditation, where applicable. Please state what steps have been taken to ensure continued accreditation by an outside body

The program has not previously been accredited. The changes being made are to move towards accreditation with EQUIS. The following quote from the EQUIS MBA Guidelines indicates the direction necessary for this accreditation as explains why the above changes have been proposed:

“It is important that the MBA be clearly identified with a certain type of content. The MBA curriculum provides broad coverage of the main functional areas in management, namely accounting, finance, marketing and sales, operations management, information systems management, law, human resource management. It is also expected to provide basic instruction in economics and quantitative analysis. The Curriculum will normally be highly integrative and will include courses in business policy and strategy. Beyond the mere acquisition of knowledge and technical skills the curriculum is expected to put theory into practice by focusing on the personal development of participants through such competencies as decision-making, team work, leadership skills, entrepreneurial potential, negotiation skills, communication and presentation skills. The later part of the programme should make provision for electives and may include the possibility for participants to choose a major area of study.”
