Teaching Mathematics Emphasis Courses EDUC734MathematicsSeminar 3unitsDesignedtofamiliarizestudentswithrecentresearchandmajordevelopments,staterequirementsandrecommendations,andprovideareviewonthecontentofelementaryandsecondarymathematics.Thecourseemphasizesthedevelopmentandpracticeofstrategiesfordeliveringmathematicalcontenttodiversepopulationsofstudents.StudentslearnabouttheCaliforniaStateMathematicsframeworkandotherimportantdocumentsrelatedtomathematicseducationanddevelopplansforimprovingthedeliveryofitscontent.Theseminarsettingallowsstudentstointeractwiththeirinstructor(s),classroompeers,andexpertsinsubjectmatterandpedagogy.

EDUC735AdvancedMathematicsSeminar3unitsAcquaintsexperiencedteachersofmathematicswithnewerdevelopmentsinmathematicscurriculum,materialsandtheuseoftechnologytosupportstudentlearning.Emphasizesmathematicalbasisforcoursesinmathematicscurriculum;organizationanddesignofmathematicsprograms;anddesignandconstructionofcurriculumand/ormaterialstomeetspecificneedsoftheteacherorschooldistrict.Topicsmayvaryfromsemestertosemester.Emphasizescurrenttrendsandconcernsofschoolmathematicseducation.

EDUC762MathLab:AssessmentandInterventionCandidatesobserveandparticipateinalocalK-12orcollegeclassroomtoexaminehowstudentslearn,exploremethodsforassessingstudentunderstanding,thenexploreandapplytheirknowledgeinthelabsetting.Participantsteachlessonstheninterviewstudentstoexploretheirmathematicalthinking.Aculminatingactionresearchprojectwillcapthecourseandwillincludeacomprehensivecasestudyofatleastonestudent,analysisofstrengthsandchallenges,alearningplan,lessonsconducted,andassessmentsofprogressovertime.

EDUC783AssessingMathematicalUnderstanding 3unitsExaminesmethodsforassessingk-12students'understandingofmathematics.Coursewillanalyzeandinterpretstandardizedtestdataandfocusonalternativeformsofassessmentthatrevealstudentconceptualizationsandproblem-solvingprocessesaboutmathematicalconceptssuchasindividualinterviews,writingtasks,performancetasks,portfoliosandtechnology-basedsimulationsandmultimedia.Mathematicsassessmentwillbeexploredasanongoingpartofinstructionandteacherplanning.

EDUC716Reading/WritingEducationalLiterature 3unitsReadingandWritingEducationalResearch:SpecialTopicsispartoftheresearchcorecompletedbystudentspursuingtheMasterofArtsinEducationdegree.EDUC716immersestheMAcandidateinreadingandanalyzingthecurrenttheoreticalandempiricalliteratureonaneducationaltopicconnectedtohis/herMAprojectorthesis.StudentsareexpectedtodefinetheirtopicandwritealiteraturereviewinanticipationoftheirMaster’sprojectorthesis.Thiscourseincorporateswritinginstruction,practice,andsupportforstudentsundertakinggraduatestudyinordertoacquiretheconventionsofacademicwritingexpectedofMasterslevelstudents.EDUC710,IntroductiontoResearchforEducators,isapre-requisiteorco-requisitecourseunlesspriorpermissionisgrantedbytheinstructor.
