ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Admission Requirements

1 The common regulations governing the Masters degree in all Faculties of the

University of Nairobi shall apply.

2 Holders of at least an Upper Second Class Honours Degree in Building Economics,

Quantity Surveying, Architecture, Engineering , Land Economics from the University

of Nairobi or an equivalent qualification from a university recognized by Senate.

3 Holders of at least a Lower Second Class Honours Degree in any of the disciplines

specified in 2.2, with a relevant postgraduate diploma or other equivalent qualifications

or at least two years relevant work experience.

3.0 Course Structure and Duration

3.1 The study programme shall consist of lectures, coursework, seminars, practicals,

written examination and a project.

3.2 Each course unit shall comprise forty five contact hours.

3.3 The programme shall be covered in a minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum

of 15

semesters of 15 weeks each.

3.4 In each semester, students shall be allowed to take a minimum of two (2) course units

and

a maximum of six (6) course units.

4.0 Transfer of Credits

Applicants who wish to transfer course work credits for similar courses taken in other

institutions may, on recommendation of the Faculty Board and the board of

postgraduate studies, and, approval by Senate, be allowed to transfer credits in their

programme, provided that no student shall be allowed to transfer more than one third

(1/3) of the total number of courses offered in the programme. Applications for credit

transfer shall be made on payment of prescribed fees, giving details of the subject(s)

for which credit is sought. The Department may administer an assessment test on

behalf of the Faculty Board and the board of postgraduate studies, for each course unit

BACHELOR OF CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

1.7 Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the stipulated minimum University of Nairobi General Admission

criteria as provided for under statute XIX. Applicants with the following qualifications will

be eligible for consideration for admission into the degree programme:

a). KCSE Applicants or Equivalent: Mean Grade C+ with a minimum of grade C+ in

the following subject clusters: English or Kiswahili; Mathematics; Physics;

Geography or Accounts or Commerce or Economics, or Building Construction or

Drawing and Design or Art and Design.

b). KACE (A Level) Applicants or Equivalent: Two Principal Passes; a minimum

principal ‘D’ pass in either Mathematics or Physics and in any one of the following

subjects: Economics, Geography, and Chemistry and a credit pass in the English

language at KCE level or equivalent

c). Diploma Holders: A minimum KCE Division II or mean grade C in KCSE in

addition to a credit pass or equivalent of the Kenya National Examinations Council

(KNEC) Diploma or its equivalent in: Building Construction, Architectural Studies,

Civil Engineering and Applied Physical Sciences.

d). Degree Holders: A holder of a University degree or its equivalent from a recognized

University in the following areas: Architecture, Engineering, Design, Economics,

Commerce, Quantity Surveying, Building Economics, Land Economics, Planning or

any other relevant equivalent degree.

1.8 Course Structure and Duration

a) The curriculum covers a minimum of eight (9) semesters and a maximum period of

sixteen (16) semesters of fifteen (15) weeks each.

b) Candidates are expected to take a minimum load of six (6) units and a maximum load

of nine (9) units each semester.

c) The studio units covered are equivalent to two (2) course units in the three years for

each semester and four (4) units for the 4th year Second Semester.

1.9 Course Delivery

The courses will be delivered through lectures, projects, and students will be grouped in small

teams dealing with relevant case studies and exercises including academic field study trips as

well as seminars.

2.0 Course Assessment and Grading

The courses are assessed through formal written examinations, studios and continuous

assessment tests (CATS). Formal written examinations are administered as per the

prescribed university, faculty and departmental examination regulations.

Continuous assessment tests (CATS) are administered during each semester and

account for 30% of the course grade while formal written end of semester

examinations account for 70 % of the final course grade. The Research project will

be examined at 100 percent continuous assessment. Studio will be examined at 200

per cent for the first and 400 percent for the final semester of study.

2.1 Examination Regulations

Examination regulations for the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Development shall

apply as indicated below.

Examinations are held in line with the common faculty examination regulations

approved by the Senate.

FAD 1 Examinations are held at the end of each semester. There are two or three

semesters in one academic year.

FAD 2 Examinations consist of Coursework, Written Papers, Research Projects and

Portfolios as appropriate.

FAD 3 One course unit is equivalent to 45 contact hours or as prescribed in the Senate

approved course outline.

FAD 4 A candidate is admitted for the examination after having satisfactorily

attended a minimum of ⅔ of the prescribed contact hours for the course unit

and taken Continuous Assessment Tests in the prescribed course units.

FAD 5 Course units are examined during the semester in which they are taken or

other times as shall be recommended by the Faculty Board and approved by

Senate. Each course examination consists of a written paper of a minimum

duration of 2 hours.

The Written Paper accounts for 70% of the total mark whereas Continuous

Assessment Tests account for 30% as approved by the Senate.

FAD 6 Examinations for all Portfolios and Research Projects are conducted at the end

of the academic year, and are treated as follows:

(a) Portfolio Examinations for the first, second, third and fourth years of

study for the Bachelor of Arts in Design degree course constitute one

(1) course unit each.

(b) All Portfolio Examinations for the first year of the Bachelor of

Architecture degree course shall constitute one (1) course unit each.

(c) All Portfolio examinations in the second, third, fourth and fifth years of

study for the Bachelor of Architecture degree course constitute six (6)

course units.

(d) Portfolio for the sixth year Bachelor of Architecture degree course

shall constitute twelve (12) course units while the Research Project

constitutes six (6) course units.

(e) All Portfolio Examinations for the second, third and fourth years of

study for the Bachelor of Arts in Planning and Bachelor of

Construction Management constitute four (4) course units.

(f) Research Projects for the fourth year of study for the degrees of

Bachelor of Quantity Surveying, Bachelor of Construction

Management, Bachelor of Arts in Land Economics and Bachelor of

Arts in Planning are submitted by the last day of written examinations

and constitute four (4) course units.

(g) The Research Project for the fourth year of study for the degree of

Bachelor of Arts in Design is submitted by the first day of written first

semester examinations and constitutes two (2) course units.

(h) A candidate who does not submit the Research Project by the

prescribed date is examined at the next second University Examinations

period.

FAD 7 The Pass Mark for each course unit is 40 percent.

FAD 8 To proceed to the next year of study, a candidate shall have:

(a) Passed all course units taken for the year of study, or

(b) Obtained an aggregate minimum mark of 40 percent and have a

cumulative failure in not more than four (4) course units in the

current and previous years of study.

FAD 9 (a) Examinations for all courses carried forward are taken at the

next University Examinations period in which each particular

course is being examined.

b) No candidate is allowed to proceed to the final year (fourth year) of the

Bachelor of Quantity Surveying, Bachelor of Construction

Management, Bachelor of Arts in Design, Bachelor of Arts in Land

Economics and Bachelor of Arts in Planning degree courses unless

they have passed all course units in the previous three (3) years of

study.

(c) No candidate is allowed to proceed to the final year (sixth year) of the

Bachelor of Architecture degree course unless he/she has passed all

course units in the previous five (5) years of study.

FAD 10 Any candidate who:

(a) Obtains an aggregate mark of less than 40 percent in the current year

of study and fails in more than four (4) course units but not more than

nine (9) course units, or

(b) Fails in five (5) to nine (9) course units cumulatively, is allowed to

Retake the failed course units during the next University Examinations

period before proceeding to the next year of study. In the case of

cumulated course units, the Retakes will only apply to the current year

of study.

FAD 11 A candidate who fails in the Portfolio and/or Research Project in the final

year of study may be allowed to Resubmit (R1) the work within three (3)

months from the date the examination results are released. In case of a failed

resubmission (R1), the candidate may be allowed a Retake (R2) the

examination at the next end of year examinations.

A candidate who fails in the Retake (R2) may be considered for a

Resubmission (R3) examination.

FAD 12 (a) A pass obtained in a Resit and or a Resubmitted examination is

entered as 40 percent in the student’s academic record.

(b) A Pass obtained in a Retake examination is entered in the student’s

academic record as full marks.

FAD 13 (a) Compensation for failed course units may be allowed in a maximum of

two (2) failed course units only in any year of study, provided that the

mark for the failed subject is 35 percent or above and the average

aggregate mark for the candidate is 50 percent or above.

(b) Two marks are taken from each course with more than 50 percent to

compensate for one mark in the failed course unit.

(c) Compensation does not apply to Portfolio and Research Projects.

(d) Resit and Retake course units are not subject to compensation.

FAD 14 Any candidate who:

(a) Is absent from an examination without satisfactory reason or,

(b) Fails in a total of ten (10) or more course units or,

(c) Fails in any written paper after the fourth (4th) attempt and/or in

portfolio after fourth the (4th) attempt or,

(d) Takes more than twice the prescribed period of a course of study

(e) Is caught cheating in the examination is shall be DISCONTINUED.

FAD 15 The final award of degree shall be based on a weighting of the last three years

of the degree programme in the ratio 1:2:3 except in the Department of

Architecture where the weighting ratio shall be 1:1:3

FAD 16 (a) The final degree awarded shall be classified as follows on the basis of

the weighted average mark:

(i) First Class Honours 70% - 100% A

(ii) Second Class Honours – Upper Division 60% - 69% B

(iii) Second Class Honours – Lower Division 50% - 59% C

(iv) Pass 40% - 49% D

(v) Fail 0% - 39% E

(b) No candidate is eligible for the award of a first class Honours degree

after having:

i). Retaken or Resat any course unit or,

ii). Resubmitted Portfolio or Research Project in the final year of study.

FAD 17 In the above rules, the following terms are defined and construed to mean:

(a) Portfolio - Course Unit(s) of a practical nature mainly conducted in a

studio, workshop, laboratory and similar environments.

(b) Research Project - Project Papers, Investigation Reports etc. as

defined in the respective course outlines of the individual departments.

(c) Resit – To sit an examination in a failed course unit other than

Portfolio and Dissertation in the next University examinations period.

A Resit is not subject to FAD 5.

(d) Retake – To attend lectures/studios of that specific unit(s) as

stipulated in FAD 5.

(e) Resubmission – To present for examination a failed Portfolio and/or

Research Project within three (3) months from the date the

examinations results are released. Resubmitting candidates rework the

failed Portfolio or Research Project under a supervisor appointed by

the Chairman of the relevant Department.

(f) Special Examination – Examination allowed to be taken by a

candidate on medical or other justifiable grounds.

(g) Discontinuation - To be deregistered as a student in the University of

Nairobi on academic grounds.

2.2 Exemption

a) A person admitted to the degree programme may apply for exemption from one or more

course units provided that no person shall be exempted from more than one third (1/3) of

the total number of course units.

b) An applicant for exemption from one or more course units shall address his/her

application to the Academic Registrar through the Dean, Faculty of Architecture Design

and Development attaching official documentation, including transcripts from an

institution recognized by the University of Nairobi.

BACHELOR OF QUANTITY SURVEYING

REQUIREMENTS

e) Candidates are expected to take a minimum load of six (6) units and a maximum load of nine (9) units each semester.

f) The research project is equivalent to four (4) course units.

B. COURSE DELIVERY

The courses are delivered through an appropriate mixture of lectures, studio project, and small working groups dealing with relevant case studies and exercises, academic field study trips as well as seminars.

C. COURSE ASSESSMENT AND GRADING

The courses are assessed through formal written examinations and continuous assessment tests. Formal written examinations are administered as per the prescribed university and faculty examination regulations.

D. FACULTY EXAMINATION REGULATIONS

Examinations are held in line with the following common faculty examination regulations approved by the Senate.

FAD 1 Each academic year shall be divided into two semesters.

FAD 2 No candidate shall be admitted to an examination unless he/she has satisfactorily attended a minimum of 2/3 of the prescribed contact hours for course of study.

FAD 3 Examinations shall consist of written papers, projects, studios and portfolios.

FAD 4 One course unit shall be equivalent to 45 Contact Hours.

FAD 5 All course units, except projects, studios and portfolios, shall be examined during the semester in which they are taken. Such examinations shall consist of continuous assessments, course tests and end of semester examinations. The end of semester examinations shall account for 70% of the total marks, while continuous assessment and course tests, shall account for 30%.

FAD 6 (a) All studio and portfolio examinations in the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Years of the Bachelor of Architecture degree course shall be conducted at the end of the academic year in which they are taken and shall in each case be equivalent to Six Course Units.

(b) All Studio/Portfolio examinations in the First Year of the Bachelor of Architecture degree course and in the first to Fourth Year of the Bachelor of Arts in Design course shall be conducted at the end of the academic year in which they are taken and shall constitute individual course units.

FAD 7 Research projects shall be examined at the end of the academic year and shall be equivalent to four course units.

FAD 8 The Pass Mark for each course Unit shall be 40%.

FAD 9 In order to proceed to the next year of study a candidate shall have:

(a) Passed all the course units taken for the year of study, or

(b) Failed in not more than four (4) course units and obtained an aggregate mark of 40%.

FAD 10 (a) A candidate shall be allowed to carry forward upto an equivalent of four (4) failed course units in a year of study. Examinations for all courses carried forward shall be taken at the next ordinary University examinations.

b) A candidate who fails studio/portfolio examinations only for the Bachelor of Architecture degree course as defined in Regulation 6(a) above may on recommendation of the Faculty Board of Examines and approval by the Senate be allowed to re-submit a failed studio/portfolio project within a period of three months

from the date the results of the Ordinary University Examinations are released.

FAD 11 Any candidate who:

a) Obtains less than an aggregate mark of 40% and fails in more than four (4) course units and not more than nine (9) course unit; or

b) Fails in the re-submitted studio/portfolio examinations for the degree of Bachelor of Architecture shall on recommendation of the Faculty Board of Examiners and approval by the Senate be NOT ALLOWED to proceed to the next year of study until he/she has satisfied regulation FAD 9 above.

c) Fails in 5 to 9 course units in retake examination or resubmitted studio/portfolio resubmitted examinations shall on recommendation of Faculty Board of Examiners and approval by the Senate be allowed to retake those units failed during the next ordinary University examinations.

FAD 12 A candidate who:

a) resits a course unit under regulations FAD above will not be subjected to rule FAD 2 above,

b) resubmits a studio/portfolio project under regulation FAD 10(b) above will be expected to attend studios and be available for crits as appropriate.

FAD 13 Any candidate who

(a) has failed more than 9 course units; or

(b) has failed in any course unit after four (4) attempts; or

(c) has attempted the course for more than the prescribed period of study for the degree programme shall on the recommendation of he Faculty Board of Examiners and approval by the Senate be DISCONTINUED.

FAD 14 A pass obtained in a resit examination shall be 40% in the student’s academic record.

FAD 15 Compensation may be allowed in a maximum of two failed course units only for any year of study, provided the mark for the failed subject is between 35% and 39% inclusive and the average mark for the candidate is 50% or above. The compensation shall not apply to Studio/Portfolio under regulation FAD 7 and all courses in the Final Year Examination for the Bachelor of Architecture degree course. General compensation rules shall apply where compensation is allowed.

FAD 16 The final award of the degree shall be based on a weighting of the last three years of the degree programme in he ratio of 1:1:3 in the department of Architecture and 1:2:3 in the other departments.

FAD 17 a) The final degree award shall be classified into FIRST CLASS HONOURS, UPPER SECOND CLASS HONOURS, LOWER SECOND CLASS HONOURS AND PASS.

FAD 18 Provided that a candidate who resists any course unit or submits portfolio,

research projects or studio examinations under regulations (10 (a)and (b) ) for the final year of study shall not be eligible for the award of an honours degree.
