The Graduate School of Management (GSOM) was established in 1993 in cooperation with W.A. Haas School of Business, University of California (Berkeley). The dynamic growth experienced by the school can be traced in history from its progression of the rst class of 33 undergraduate students in 1993 to a now internationally recognized Russian center of education and research in management having over 1600 students and 2000 alumni in all degree programs. The GSOM faculty consists of 70 full-time professors and instructors, most of whom received training in top U.S. & European universities and business schools. In line with the concept of a university school of management, GSOM oers a complete portfolio of degree programs where MIB takes the distinctive place of the rst English-language graduate program in Russia, designed in ECTS standard.

In April 2006 the Government of the Russian Federation made an ocial decision to choose the school as the platform to create a world-class school of management for education, training and development of national managerial elite. This initiative has the status of the National Priority Project in education initiated by President V. Putin. GSOM’s joining the Community of European Management Schools and International Companies (CEMS) became another acknowledgment of the school achievements in the development of Russian business education.

St. Petersburg State University (SPSU) is the leading and the oldest university in Russia founded in 1724. Today the University has 19 departments and 14 research institutes, the sum curricula of which account for breakthrough research achievements being developed through the profound knowledge and teaching experience of generations of SPSU scholars. In the span of almost three centuries of existence, the University has acquired excellent experience in international co-operation in areas of research, education and culture. It currently has over 100 agreements of cooperation with universities in 50 countries and over 1500 international students.

GSOM Facilities

The MIB program is based in a historical GSOM building dating back to the XVII century. It was completely renovated in 2002. The 4,500 square meter building is designed to provide a modern and comfortable learning environment, includes the library, computer labs, Internet / Wi-Fi, multimedia equipment, study rooms, cafeteria, book shop, copying facilities among others.

GSOM students can also use the resources of the SPSU Scholar Library and all of its 20 branches (with over 6.7 million of volumes). The GSOM Management and Social Sciences Library is unique in terms of the width of the range of subjects in its collection. A variety of full-text and reference databases is available for the users from the Library computers. The Library oers a range of additional services, e.g. printing, scanning, photocopying, ordering document copies from outer sources, and free Internet access.

MIB students coming from abroad or from other regions of the Russian Federation usually live in one of the student dormitories of St. Petersburg State University. The nearest dormitory is located on Vasilievsky Island about 20 minutes commuting time from the campus. (The students requiring assistance with accommodation for the semester should ll out the appropriate eld in the Application form).

STUDENT LIFE

MIB students enjoy their life in the metropolitan and cultural center of St. Petersburg with a lot of opportunities to enjoy the world and Russian culture. GSOM organizes cultural activities, academic and social events, e.g. the Annual Student Conference, Peter F. Drucker Award competition and ceremony, Career Days, Business Plan Competition, and many others

Business Plan Competition

The Annual Godwin Wang Business Plan Competition is a joint project of the Graduate School of Management and the Institute of Management, Innovation and Organization at the Haas School of Business (University of California, Berkeley). It was launched in 1999. The competition fosters the spirit of entrepreneurship and encourages entrepreneurial venture spirit among the students and graduates of SPSU and other universities.

Career Days

The Career Days are organized by the GSOM Career Center in the Fall and Spring Semesters. This is an occasion when the companies come to GSOM to invite the MIB students for internships or to recruit the graduates for full-time positions. In addition to excellent networking opportunities, the Career Center provides assistance in the employment search strategies, e.g. resume writing, successful interviewing at companies.

Peter F. Drucker Award

Peter F. Drucker Award Ceremony is the largest corporate event at GSOM and the most important GSOM tradition that brings together students, faculty, and alumni after the Annual Student Conference. Awards in 7 nominations are given to students as well as to distinguished faculty members as a result of GSOM students voting earlier in the semester. Then everyone stays for a variety show program with GSOM students, professional actors and musicians.

Tina Szalay International Exchange Student, Fall 2005Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration

I was studying at the Graduate School of Management (GSOM) in St. Petersburg during the Fall 2005 semester. This semester was the best experience in my life. It was a great chance to study in a wonderful city in a very special country. I really enjoyed studying at GSOM. As I'm a student of Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, and it is very big, I'm used to have thousands of people around me. But at GSOM we were only a small amount of people, and it gave studying a personal and intimate feeling. The courses at GSOM are taught in English, and it is very important nowadays. It's also a great opportunity for people who can't speak Russian to study in Russia. GSOM oers a range of very interesting courses. I especially appreciated the interactive atmosphere in class. We were doing a lot of teamwork projects, presentations and discussions. I think that it's very important to use methods like that in courses.

Andrey GrigorievMIB 2001Current position: Unit manager, P&GSpeaking about studies at GSOM in general and at MIB in particular, there is no doubt that it increased my chance to succeed in my career path. I owe to the Program my understanding of the core business issues, business communication and general approaches. I am very thankful to the MIB program. Here I got acquainted with the work by many management and marketing gurus like Peter Drucker, Philip Kotler, and Jack Trout. Due to MIB I feel condent now speaking with my business partners and colleagues whatever their elds of expertise or discussed issues are – nancial indices, franchising, or marketing mix.

Maria Rumyantseva MIB 2004Current position: Oce-based Account Manager Coordinator, Telemarketing Russia/Ukraine/Belarus Shell-East Europe Company LtdThe MIB program at GSOM was an excellent 2 years experience of lectures and seminars, projects and company tours, and my Master’s Thesis research. Most of all I enjoyed the international atmosphere while working in teams with students from dierent countries. Besides that, GSOM provided a wonderful opportunity to study for one semester in one of the European partner universities, which was denitely a great challenge and unforgettable experience. If I had to make a choice again which Master program to take, I would no doubt choose the same program at GSOM!

The two-year program is divided into four semesters, with one semester spent abroad in a partner university in EU. English is the only language of instruction through the entire program. Program curriculum consists of the coursework, Master’s Thesis, and advanced study compulsory requirements.

It develops diverse skills in international management such as strategic planning of foreign market entry, management of multicultural workforce, coordination of multinational operations, risk management in international business, cross-cultural business and communication. The coursework for the Master’s degree in International Business is organized around three blocks: business and research foundation courses, advanced international business courses, and electives. Teaching method is based on interactive approaches, unique case studies, business guest speakers, and company visits.

Intensive work on the Master’s Thesis (it accounts for 20 ECTS) starts in the rst semester and results with the Open Presentation (“Defense”) at the end of the program. Every semester each student submits reports on his/her research work progress to the Research Advisor appointed from the faculty members immediately after the student is admitted to GSOM. The selection of the Advisor is done after reviewing the student’s application essay which includes a proposed topic for the Master’s Thesis.

All MIB students are expected to study for 1 semester at one of the GSOM partner universities. GSOM has exchange agreements with 26 universities and business schools. Corporate Guest Lectures 2007-2008:

2007 Summer Internship Program Companies:

The compulsory advanced study requirements of the MIB Program consist of a summer internship, a consulting project, three communication skills workshops, and foreign language prociency development.

Summer break between the rst and the second years of the MIB Program is used to obtain a professional work experience at an international company, usually one of the GSOM corporate partners. It helps convert academic knowledge acquired through the coursework into practical business experience. Internships last for at least 6 weeks.

Consulting projects are designed to develop project management, teamwork and leadership skills. Each student works as a member of a small international team on a special assignment developed by a real corporate client. The projects are jointly tutored and evaluated by a company representative and a GSOM faculty member. The Project results (work and proposed solutions) are presented to the company and fellow classmates in the end of the semester and evaluated.

Consulting projects were introduced into the program curriculum in the Fall 2006. It has clearly proved to be a very valid learning experience for the participants. During the Fall Semester 2007 the projects were successfully accomplished in alliance with the following companies:

LUMENE AUCHANCOCA-COLA HBC EURASIA ELCOTEQ

These workshops equip the students with essential skills to communicate their ideas in the academic and business world, to launch a fast professional career, and to adjust easily to the cross-cultural management environment. The skills to be trained include academic and business writing, research work, cross-cultural social and business communication, teamwork and presentation skills. The seminars are often provided by members of the international and business community.

MIB graduates are expected to have a good command of at least two foreign languages to ensure that they will be able to live and work comfortably in a diverse cultural environment. Therefore, obtaining prociency in a foreign language other than English is crucial and is strictly required from each student of the MIB Program as a three-semester part of the curriculum. The choice is among the French, German, Spanish or Russian languages.

The competitiveness of the graduates in the job market is built upon the faculty ability to inspire and motivate the students. This is exactly how MIB program works. Hot discussions of Russian and international business cases take place at every occasion: during the lectures and seminars, group meetings, and even when we have a lunch together. Here everyone senses a great “I can do it” attitude in every business task. Then, after the graduation, it becomes so clear that the positive attitude and the self-condence based on the professional knowledge always win.

GSOM corporate partners are actively involved in various MIB program activities: consulting projects, summer internships, guest lectures, special workshops, and more. All these program components are benecial both to the students and to the corporate partners: the former get a remarkable opportunity to implement their skills and theoretical knowledge of international business, while the latter have a chance to obtain a fresh view of their business problems, to get to know the brightest students, and to share their professional expertise with the new generation of the future business leaders.Senior management and the sta of the companies contribute their time and expertise to make the MIB summer internship programs successful: The process includes the rst interview, mentoring and supervising during the six weeks of the internship.

Page 11: Master in International Business

The two-year program is divided into four semesters, with one semester spent abroad in a partner university in EU. English is the only language of instruction through the entire program. Program curriculum consists of the coursework, Master’s Thesis, and advanced study compulsory requirements.

The program curriculum ensures that the students receive both a conceptual theoretical framework and practical expertise in economics and management.

The students do not have to pay the guest university tuition fee due to the current GSOM agreements with these universities. The ECTS format of the coursework results is acknowledged by GSOM towards the graduation from the MIB Program.

Studying at the MIB program provides a world of opportunities, starting from the international environment which is sensed from the very rst day at the program, up to the Study Abroad experience at one of the top European business schools. Education is interactive: every class includes lively discussions of the most relevant management issues, and everyone feels free to participate. Teamwork is also encouraged. It gives students great cooperation skills. There are also various extracurricular activities where we can learn and network.

GSOM annually establishes new contacts with the major universities and business schools worldwide. Each semester dozens of international students from the partner schools come to study at the MIB program, and approximately the same number of the MIB students goes for 1 semester to Europe.

GSOM is a proud member of the Community of European Management Schools (CEMS). MIB Program students achieve a very prestigious international degree of Master in International Management additionally to their MIB degree.CEMS is a strategic alliance of world business and higher education. It currently consists of 17 European nest academic institutions, 8 non-European academic institutions and over 50 leading multinational companies. CEMS’s mission is a global standard of excellence in management education through the development of a unique cross European degree program Master in International Management. CEMS MIM degree is an excellent international tool for outstanding career success available to the best European students. It is taught at each of its member-universities. The CEMS MIM is nurtured by a longstanding teaching and research cooperation. Cultural diversity is another strongest point of CEMS. Today CEMS Alumni includes over 2500 graduates from 35 dierent nationalities at varying management levels in a broad range of industry sectors across Europe and beyond. The program encourages international mobility, cross-cultural mindset and is ultimately a very fast track to success globally. The rst year MIB students usually apply for the CEMS MIM program participation, and if selected, can do the MIM master studies during their second year at GSOM MIB Program.

The consulting project for Henkel Company has become a great learning source. We really enjoyed the opportunity to observe business in action, to work side by side with very professional managers and to learn a lot for our professional and personal development. We are grateful to the managers for their openness, kindheartedness and readiness to help.

The Graduate School of Management (GSOM) was established in 1993 in cooperation with W.A. Haas School of Business, University of California (Berkeley).
