During the First World War Talbot House in Poperinge,a few miles short of the front line in Belgium, became a haven for thousands ofallied troops, a ‘home from home’where they could enjoya few rare comforts and spend quality me recalling themen they really were.Aimed at a family audience, this feelgood and moving play gives a brief taste of the history of this legendary house and, with the aid of poetry & music from The Great War, the atmosphere that was felt by the troops that visited it.The play stars Iain Barton, Andrew Meller and Peter Gill.Peter wrote & directs the play and is also highly acclaimed for the must-see ‘Meet Tommy Atkins’, presented last season here at the UGT on a na onwide tour.Tickets: £12 (UGT members £11)

We con nue the series of Beethoven String Quartets and Piano Sonatas, each with two concerts. CELEBRATING JANE AUSTENSaturday 15th July. 2pm to 6pm. Venue and café open 12.30pm.Next week the literary world will be commemorating the 200th anniversary of author Jane Austen’s death. The UGT is proud to celebrate the occasion with an afternoon of enlightenment and entertainment. At 2pm, UGT patron Robert Milnes will give a talk about Jane Austen’s life, her books and their critical reception andhints about reading texts that are 200 years old in the present day. There will be time for questions and discussion. Afternoon tea follows at 3.30pm.At 4pm, the very first film adaption to be made of a Jane Austen novel will be shown. Pride and Prejudice, filmed in 1940, starred Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. This film is nearly forgotten now, swamped out by the huge number of adaptions since the advent of video and DVD.Books will be available to purchase courtesy of Camillas Bookshop.Free entry.
