Josh Ireland (l-r) Andy, Nancy, Stéphanie, Francis and Alain Roberge.Albadon TEESWATER, ONThe Ireland Family

While it is an honour and a pleasure for the Ireland family to be recognized as Master Breeders, the pathway to success at Albadon has always been to produce milk in the most efficient and economical way. All farm decisions have always been, and will continue to be, made with an eye to the future – any awards along the way are viewed as icing on the cake!

The Ireland family and their dedicated team of staff milk 165 cows in a freestall facility and farm 900 acres in Ontario’s Bruce County. The Irelands credit both their team of advisors and DHI as the tools most significant to the herd’s success, using the advice and data to make educated management decisions and benchmark their herd against other herds. The LPI index has always been used to select bulls that breed the most efficient cows, and semen purchases are viewed as an investment, not an expense.

While the “Gold Standard” cow at Albadon is one producing over 100,000 kg of milk in nine lactations or less, the Irelands don’t single out any cow families that have contributed to their Shield. They prefer to manage the herd as a whole, improving every cow, and feel that each cow has helped contribute to their award. This management focus earned the Irelands the 2012 CanWest DHI Management Award and is reflected in the herd’s current classification and impressive production.

The family places high importance on work life balance, and as such, both Mark and Josh are active in their community. Mark is a former Bruce County Dairy Producer Committee member and Gay Lea Delegate, while Josh currently serves as Bruce County Dairy Producer Committee Vice Chair, and is a former Ontario Dairy Youth Award Winner, Holstein Club Director and Gay Lea CLP participant.

The Penner family takes great pride in the fact that they are a family-first operation and believe that the benefits of raising a family on the farm are priceless. It is that sense of family and working together, combined with a “sell the best, milk the rest” attitude, which has earned the family a second Master Breeder Shield for their Benner herd. The Penners are incredibly honoured and grateful to be recognized as a 2x Master Breeder herd.

Don, Tim, Scott and their families milk 350 cows – 110 in tie-stalls and 240 in a robotic facility. The family farms 1,700 acres of land near Steinbach, Manitoba. An intensive on-farm flushing program has allowed the herd’s top cow families to flourish. With 80-85% of the calves registered as ETs over the last number of years, embryo transfer has been the most significant tool used to achieve success at Benner.

Benner cattle have done well both domestically and internationally, and the Penners have bred and sold 25 EX and 40 VG cows to the US in the last 13 years. Three herd favourites are Benner Luke Jean (VG-2YR-CAN 23*), Benner Progress Jacinda (GP-82-2YR-CAN 24*) and Benner Goldwyn Jamarco (VG-87-5YR-CAN 7*). Jean and her descendants are silky, dairy, open-ribbed cows with great quality udders and a will to milk, while Jacinda’s family members are big, deep, open cows that have made their mark in the show ring. Jamarco has proven ability to transmit high production and high index to her high-scoring daughters and their progeny.

The Penners are well-recognized in their community. Don has been on the Manitoba Holstein Branch Board and is a Past-President of the Branch and their local Holstein Club, local 4-H leader and WCC leader and coach.

Placing high importance on the conservation of their family heritage and sharing their passion, work ethic, sense of community and love of animals with the next generation, the Lavigne family views their first Master Breeder Shield as encouragement to continue the family’s long-standing farming tradition in Canada. Any obstacles over the years have merely provided them the opportunity to review priorities and goals to ensure their Deric herd kept moving forward.

Alain, Jean-Pierre and their family milk 105 cows in a tie-stall facility and farm 1,004 acres of land – including a 1,600-tap maple syrup operation – in Ontario’s Prescott County. In the early 90’s, Alain bought a group of high potential animals from a good herd, and these are the animals the Deric herd was built on.

Included in the group of cattle purchased are Shield contributors STBVQ Counselor Frankie (VG-88-6YR-CAN 5*), STBVQ Aerostar Evanie (VG-85-4YR-CAN 4*) and STBVQ Leadman Nadine (VG-88-7YR-CAN 4*). Descendants of Frankie possess great production, while family members of Evanie have a great combination of high production and longevity. Excellent mammary systems and exceptional conformation are qualities Nadine has successfully passed on to her descendants. Management is also a major focus for the Lavignes, earning them the status of top BCA herd in Ontario in 2008 and being ranked third in Canada that same year. More recently, the family received an Award of Excellence in Agriculture for Prescott-Russell in 2013.

Both Alain and Jean-Pierre are very community-minded and volunteer their time with a number of different organizations including Collège d’Alfred, Agricultural Management Club of Ontario, local Economic Development Committee, Coop Agri East, a Machinery sharing co-op, their church and various sports. The family also raises Canadian horses – an at-risk heritage breed.

A true family farm with a tremendous herd, Carl is the fourth generation of Desrochers at the helm of the Desnette herd, receiving its second Master Breeder title.

Carl and his wife, Sandra, milk 52 cows in a tie-stall facility on a beautiful farm in the Centre of Québec. Working side-by-side with their valued employee, they each contribute in their own way to the success of the herd. Awards are not simply the result of making the right breeding decision; to Carl, it is hard work and many different elements aligned with good management and consistent attention to detail that makes a great breeder.

Several cows contributed to this second shield and the herd’s success. The first cow is Desnette Lausanne Rudolph (EX-92-3E 5*). Lausanne is a top production cow who was very successful in the show ring. She has successfully passed these qualities on with 10 daughters classified VG. Her granddaughter, Desnette Laynie Impression (VG-88-3YR-CAN) travelled to World Dairy Expo and the Royal Winter Fair as part of the Semex daughter display in 2014. Desnette Bianca Leader (EX 5*) is another important matriarch whose daughters and granddaughters continue her extreme conformation proven by their performance at shows in both Canada and the US.

For Carl, showing and farming are two different things, but he believes shows have helped him become a better breeder. The many buyers who have purchased successful animals from the farm would agree with him. A special moment for Carl was showing Desnette Darling Milan (VG-89 1*) when she won her class at the Royal in 1999.

Pedigrees a mile long and a family that pours their passion into having healthy, comfortable cows that improve with each generation – that’s Desnette!

Earning a second Master Breeder Shield has been the goal for the Drolet family since 2000, when their Drolie herd attained this award for the first time. The first title defined the top cow families in the herd and extensive use of embryo transfer developed these families leading to the second shield.

Pierre, Henriette, Piér-Luc and Samuel milk 100 cows in a tie-stall facility, and farm 550 acres of land in the Portneuf region of Québec. Embryo transfer and cow comfort are the two keys to their herd’s success. The objective of increasing the longevity of the herd has definitely been attained with 13 animals contributing to the shield, each producing 100,000 kg of milk.

Herd favourite Drolie Stardom Hiris (VG-87 16*) transmits excellent mammary systems and strong production to her daughters, the best known being Drolie Jolt Happy (VG-87 6*) and Goldwyn granddaughters, Habby (VG-89) and Happen (EX-92-2E). The Fantaisy family is noted for the dairy strength and longevity that it brings to the herd. A finalist in the “Vache coup de coeur” contest in 2014, Drolie Rudolph Fantaisy (VG-87 14*) is still in the herd today at 17 years of age. Descendants of these families and others have been marketed successfully internationally, and here in Canada the Drolets are proud to have sold six first-calf heifers who went on to be EX cows for their new owners.

Passion for agriculture is a family affair for the Drolets. They have won the prestigious “Médaille d’or mérite agricole” and “Famille Terrienne” awards. Pierre is the President of the Portneuf Holstein Club and Samuel the Vice-president. Having their sons part of the business and their daughter, Geneviève, working for Holstein Québec is a great source of pride for Pierre and Henriette.

Patti Alsop’s grandfather bought his first registered Holstein in the 1930’s and since the 1940’s the herd has been a closed, 100% homebred herd with animals bearing the Glenwin prefix. Patti is very proud to receive her first Master Breeder Shield for the herd, and while it is nice to be recognized for her hard work, she also views the award as incentive to continue improving the herd and moving the farm forward.

Patti and her family milk 100 cows in a new, sand-bedded free-stall facility, and farm 700 acres of land in Ontario’s Grey County. The success of the Glenwin herd has been achieved by careful sire selection using the top proven bulls from AI units, most recently, Eastgen. With a herd classification of 19 EX – 56 VG – 36 GP – 2 G, the herd also boasts fantastic production earning a place as a top milk production herd in Grey County for many years.

Three cows making significant contributions to the herd’s first Master Breeder Shield are Glenwin Stylist Cindy (EX-2E-CAN 4*), Glenwin Formation Coyote (VG-7YR-CAN 4*) and Glenwin Outside Mouse (EX-90-2E-CAN). Cindy left many good natured descendants with large frames and great longevity, while Mouse has proven ability to transmit high production, excellent udders and strong feet and legs. All three cows have many descendants scored VG and EX. Another well-known Glenwin animal is Glenwin Goldwyn Calypso (EX-96-3E-CAN) the Honourable Mention All-Canadian 5-YR-Old in 2013.

Patti has set a great example for female herd operators everywhere, managing her herd herself while simultaneously raising five wonderful children as a single parent. York Region Holstein Club’s first female president encourages young breeders to invest in strong foundation cows and quality semen, attend meetings and find a mentor.

To the Goulds, family is the most important component in earning their first Master Breeder Shield for their Gouldhaven herd – both human and bovine families! Barry, Vera, Scott and Jason are very proud to be receiving their shield, and are quick to point out the accomplishment is the result of everyday work done by the entire family, the contributions of multiple cow families and the help of many outside people. A Master Breeder Shield is reassurance they are breeding cows that are a complete package of production and longevity.

The Goulds milk 60 cows in a tie-stall facility, farm 550 acres and operate a 23,000-bird broiler barn in Ontario’s Renfrew County. Embryo transfer has been the most significant tool in the success of the herd. Ten years ago Barry made the decision to implant embryos into all heifers and any cows not classified VG or EX . This was a decision that was quite an investment initially, but that has certainly paid off by many VG, EX and stars in the pedigrees.

A great brood cow contributing over 25% of the points towards the shield is Gouldhaven Jewel (VG 13*). This Prelude daughter has 12 VG or EX daughters and proven ability to transmit size and power, solid feet and legs and great functional udders. Other herd favourites are Micheret Hot Red Steven (VG-88 7*) and Lorka Salto Piata (VG-88 8*), both with exceptional ability to transmit their great qualities to their descendants.

The Gould family is very active in their community serving on the Renfrew County Holstein Club and supplying 4-H calves to non-dairy farm kids. Vera and Jason are also involved with the local Minor Hockey as Treasurer and a coach.

In 1993 Walter and Heidi von Ah made the decision to immigrate to Canada from Switzerland with their young family and purchase an on-going operation with little money. Now, after 21 years and a lot of hard work by the entire family, the von Ahs are very honoured and grateful to be receiving the first Master Breeder Shield for their Heiwa herd.

Walter, Heidi and son, Andre, milk 80 cows in a tie-stall facility and farm 420 acres in Ontario’s Russell County. In addition to 100 registered Holsteins, the Heiwa herd is also home to 25 Brown Swiss animals. The von Ahs feel DHI and classification have been the most significant tools used to achieve success with the herd. DHI allows them to track their milk value and herd somatic cell counts, while classification analyzes weaknesses and strengths, allowing them to breed accordingly.

Solid, functional cows with the ability to produce high-volumes of milk for multiple lactations are the kind of great cows found at Heiwa. Herd favourite Heiwa Hero Heidy (EX-CAN 8*) was the herd’s first VG-2YR-Old, first EX and has three Superior Lactations and 14 VG or GP daughters in the herd. Heiwa Goodluck Lady (EX-91-CAN 4*) and Heiwa Crew Crispy (VG-88-7YR-CAN 3*) are also two cows with proven ability to transmit their exceptional conformation and production to their many herd descendants.

The von Ah family takes a lot of pride in the management of their herd. The Heiwa herd has been in the Top 3 for BCA herds in Russell County in addition to placing in the Top 5 for Herd Management for the past 10 years. All three children were also members of the Dairy 4-H Club.

Earning the second Master Breeder Shield for the Karona herd means that the challenge of maintaining the high standard of conformation and production they desire has been met.

The Caron family milks 45 cows in a tie-stall facility, and farm 90 hectares of land in the Bois-Francs area of Québec. Classification and milk recording are the tools used to maintain the level of success this herd has enjoyed for many years. Learning how to listen to the comments of the classifiers and using milk recording to know exactly what your cows are producing, for both milk and solids, are the keys to success.

Although originally known as a production herd, Karona exemplifies deep pedigrees. This is demonstrated by herd favorite, Karona Storm Frost (EX-90-2E 7*) a 17th generation VG or EX. The potential 18th generation VG or EX from this exceptional family is already born at the farm. Karona Emerson Bonnie (EX-93-3E 14*) is the matriarch of a solid production family that has produced many sires for AI. The Carons enjoy showing and Karona Allen Winter (EX-94-2E 3*) represents a line of high producing show cattle. Karona animals and embryos have been marketed in more than 24 countries world-wide.

Pierre Caron is an Official Judge with Holstein Canada and has enjoyed judging shows in Canada, Brazil and Belgium. Active in the dairy industry, Pierre has served on several boards, UPA, CAB and President of Holstein Québec in 1997. He is also involved in his community and believes that successful breeding is the result of balance and that we need balance in our lives as well.

Pierre shared the pride of winning the first shield with his family, and gave them the advice to follow their dreams, believe in what they do and go after what they want. The Karona herd just keeps improving, and Pierre-Olivier and Obrey are motivated to work towards a third shield to share with their father.

Her cows and farm have always been – and will continue to be – the main priority, but for Lillian Drummond, learning the cows had earned Lilbri Holsteins’ first Master Breeder Shield was very special. The Master Breeder award serves as a reminder of the countless hours spent on the breeding program and trying to provide the best feed and care to the animals.

Lillian milks 28 cows in a tie-stall facility and, together with her husband Brian, farms 200 acres in Ontario’s Lanark County. Following an unfortunate house fire, Lillian assumed the day-to-day management of the farm herself to be home with their children, while Brian took a job off the farm and continued to help with equipment maintenance and cropping. Lillian believes the tool most significant to the herd’s success is her knowledge of the cow families. A small, closed herd with only two main cow families affords her the opportunity to really analyze and identify strengths, weaknesses and consistencies.

Reliable brood cows with great conformation and production are the kind of cows Lillian aims to breed. Great examples of this pattern are Lilbri Skychief Lola (VG-88-6YR-CAN 4*), Lilbri Korndyke Rudy (EX-90-4E-CAN 2*) and Lilbri Chicago Rosie (EX-92-7E-CAN). All three cows have completed more than eight lactations; have many descendants in the herd; and have proven ability to transfer their best qualities to the next generation.

A very active dairywoman, Lillian has been involved with the Lanark Federation of Agriculture and the Lanark Holstein Club in different roles over the years, and was the first woman on the Lanark Milk Committee. However, at the end of the day Lillian farms because she is passionate about the cows and enjoys the life farming has given her family.

There are two guiding principles helping the Maskita team earn their first Master Breeder Shield: 1. A team effort leads to excellent results, and 2. Try to understand and then make it work. Maskita is a prominent place for students to learn about dairy production. The team is proud to share their knowledge at a model farm with excellent genetics, providing students with a source of inspiration.

The college farm is a non-profit company which partners l’institut de technologie agroalimentaire du Québec, le Centre d’insémination artificielle du Québec, la Faculté de médicine vétérinaire de l’Université de Montréal and the Salon de l’agriculture. The herd milks 38 cows.

The results are a team effort by herd managers, Marcel Bilodeau who for 25 years worked to improve conformation while also increasing production, and Sébastien Roy who, along with employees Rick Favreau and Jean-Sébastien Savaria, implemented improvements for cow comfort to increase performance.

Maskita Jubilant Trina (EX 7*) is the descendant from one of many heifers purchased at De la Presentation Farm and she contributes 46% of the points towards the award. Maskita Astre Lise (VG 9*) is the matriarch of the second most important family. Lise is the result of an exchange with Boviteq for boarding heifers, and her progeny are noted for excellent mammary systems generation after generation. Another current herd favourite is Maskita Goldwyn Shadow (EX-93-2E) who has earned a superior lactation.

The principal objective at Maskita is to teach good breeding practices to students who are thirsty for knowledge. The farm has always encouraged students by selling animals and embryos at reasonable prices. Maskita is a team effort of employees, students and professors to breed cows that are calm, productive and long-lasting. The Master Breeder title certainly adds credibility and visibility as an excellent teaching establishment.

CLASSIFICATIONA second shield for the Milibro herd, started in 1973 by Michel Brochu and his wife Lyse, is quite an accomplishment. A combination of hard work and a strict breeding strategy is what lead the Brochu family to this prestigious title once again.

With the Milibro herd now in the capable hands of the next generation, Daniel Brochu and his wife Isabelle Dubois have been the sole shareholders since 2010. The farm lies in the picturesque region of the Bois-Francs in Québec. At Milibro there are 140 head with 65 cows and the balance being heifers and calves. The herd has had 73 animals classify EX since 1973. In 2001 the farm placed second in the prestigious “Ordre de mérite agricole” competition in Québec.

The matriarch of the herd is Milibro Charles Rose (VG-87 18*) who has passed her show winning conformation down to her daughters and granddaughters, many of them with long lists of All-Québec accolades. One of the most popular of Rose’s daughters is Milibro Windstar Roselyne (EX-94-4E 7*) who has seven EX and seven VG daughters. Roselyne is the dam of the popular bull Roseplex. Two other cows that have impacted the herd are Milibro Gibson Mireille (EX-91-6E 4*), a great production cow who passed this trait on to her progeny, and Milibro Charles Louiselle (VG-88 5*). The pride of the farm is Milibro Cousteau Leila (EX-94-3E USA) who was sold after much showring success as a Jr-2-YR-Old and now has granddaughters making their mark in the US.

For Daniel, the recipe for success is simple. Each calf is cared for from birth as if it is a future show winner, an excellent cow and a contributor to the next Master Breeder shield. The future of the herd is assured by their nephew, Maxime, who will continue the Milibro breeding traditions.

While Don and Diane Catt have achieved a lifelong goal by receiving their first Master Breeder Shield for their Narwood herd, they are very quick to point out that it is a family award. Right from the moment a breeding decision is made, it takes the whole Catt family working together to move the herd forward.

Don, Diane and their sons Dennis and Devin milk 40 cows in a tie-stall facility and farm 260 acres of land in Ontario’s Elgin County. Besides traditional tools such as DHI, classification and bull proofs, at Narwood animal comfort is the key to success. The addition of a new heifer facility in 1991 provided the space to grow heifers to their full potential, and a barn renovation in the late 90’s allowed for a section of bigger stalls to make the larger cows much more comfortable.

Representing 40% of the points towards the Catts’ shield is the bloodline of Narwood Charles Emmylee (VG-86-6YR-CAN 7*). Emmylee produced one VG and three EX daughters, and her descendants are strong, deep-bodied cows with well-attached udders. Narwood Lee Honey (EX-90-2E-CAN 3*) and her family contributed another 35% of the points. With five VG daughters, Honey’s descendants are large cows with lots of dairy strength and strongly-attached udders well above the hock.

The Catts are a very active family within their community. Don served as a director of the Elgin County Holstein Club for 13 years also serving a term as president. The 4-H program has been a significant influence on the family, and they have all been heavily involved for many years as members, leaders and various positions with the Elgin County 4-H Association Board of Directors.

The Master Breeder Shield signifies reaching an important step, and is acknowledgment for a job well done for the Ricstar prefix, registered with Holstein Canada in 1990. The desire to improve, hard work and resiliency are the keys to success, but you also need to maintain some balance.

éric Bréniel and élise Sawyer have 41 cows in lactation with a herd total of 107 animals. They cultivate 127 acres in the beautiful region of St-Hyacinthe, Québec. Special attention is paid to selecting sires with good health traits to ensure future generations will be superior. Finding the perfect balance between the performance and the health of the herd has resulted in awards for production, milk quality and herd management.

Three cow families have contributed to the award. Lylehaven Lead Connie (VG-86-4YR-CAN 13*) is a complete cow that transmits her conformation and production to her daughters. Many bulls have been sold to AI including several sold to Italy, Colombia and Spain. Lauduc Progress Winnie (EX-93-5E-CAN 9*) was purchased without a great plan but with spectacular results! Her descendants have exceptional udders and superior production. Friesa Skychief Truce (EX-92-CAN 7*) is a show cow with a strong pedigree. Her daughters have high type but also a superior production award. The genetics from all three of these families have been made available to breeders looking to improve their herds.

éric has been involved as a Director in the local Holstein Club and President of his Management club. He is a director of the local agricultural society and enjoys judging 4-H shows. His goal is to continue mentoring his wife, son and devoted employee, Mathieu Campeau, so they can continue to achieve the farm’s breeding goals.

One old cow and a whole lot of supportive people along the way are the magic ingredients in the first Master Breeder Shield for the McGriskin family and their Riskinbrook herd. Joe and Kathy and their family don’t know how to describe the feelings of pride and accomplishment they have about receiving the award they have been working toward for many years.

The McGriskins milk 30 cows in a tie-stall facility and farm 300 acres of owned and rented land in Ontario’s Peterborough County. A lot of hard work and listening to the advice of others combined with the tools of milk recording and classification have helped move the Riskinbrook herd to the successful and young herd it is today – 20 of the 30 milking cows are two-year-olds.

As mentioned, it was one old cow that started it all, and that cow was Nassau Hills Rockman Fern A (G-78-3YR-CAN 1*) purchased as an 11-YR-Old. In fact, Fern and her descendants contributed all of the points towards the shield. The descendants of Fern’s granddaughter Nassau Hills SS Kathie (GP-81-3YR-CAN) and Kathie’s daughter Nassau Hills Kateri (GP-80-3YR-CAN 5*) contributed 70% of the points. This is a cow family that is known for their longevity and durability, as well as their ability to pass on their best qualities to their offspring, improving on each generation.

Joe and Kathy are very proud of how far their herd has come from its humble beginnings. They also appreciate all of the hard work by their five children who pitched in when they were needed, and are grateful for the countless other individuals who offered a helping hand, kind words, a piece of advice or a good deal to help keep them inspired over the years.

The Farlinger family is very happy to be receiving the first Master Breeder Shield for their Signature herd. Michael and Thea are honoured to be recognized by Holstein Canada for breeding the kind of cows they like to work with every day – cows that combine high type with high production and show style to compete at a national level.

Michael, Thea and their family milk 55 cows in a tie-stall and farm 475 acres of land in Ontario’s Dundas County. A very well-known herd in the show circles, the Farlingers name classification and showing as the tools most significant to their herd’s success. Classification provides an unbiased, professional evaluation of the cattle compared to the breed ideals, while showing provides them the opportunity to compare their herd to the best animals across the country.

Fitting the Signature mould are Marvans Mandel Daisy (VG-87-3YR-CAN 4*), Signature Broker Laurie (VG-88-4YR-CAN 5*) and Seawayview Astre Speck (EX-CAN). Daisy’s progeny are strong-framed cattle with great milk production, while Laura’s descendants are large, stylish cows with exceptional feet, legs and udders. Speck’s family members are stylish, youthful cows with exceptional longevity. A number of Signature animals have also made names for themselves in the show rings across North America. Some of the most notable are: Signature R Katness (VG-87-2YR-CAN), Signature L Desire (VG-86-3YR-USA), Signature L Desiree and Signature A Kiss. The herd has been recognized with several All-Canadian, All-American and All-Ontario nominations over the years, and has earned highest production Holstein herd honours in Dundas County on multiple occasions.

Michael is an Official Judge with Holstein Canada, and both he and Thea serve as 4-H Leaders. The family also breeds CKC Registered Working German Shepherd dogs.

The Dykxhoorns have always strived to be the best stewards of all the gifts God has given them, and are truly grateful for the many ways He has blessed them. Charlie and Irene along with their son, Dan and daughter-in-law, Janine, are honoured to receive the Silverridge herd’s third Master Breeder Shield, an award rewarding the hard work and dedication of the entire family since the herd’s beginnings in 1963.

The Dykxhoorns milk 120 cows in a sand-bedded free-stall facility, and farm 470 acres of land in Ontario’s Elgin County. The family believes a number of tools are integral in the herd’s success. They always try to surround themselves with industry partners who provide excellent service and advice, and cow comfort and exceptional nutrition are also essential to a high-calibre herd. Additionally, classification, DHI, embryo transfer and their breeding program play key roles in the success of the herd.

Contributing significantly to the herd’s third shield are the bloodlines of Silverridge Nicole Star (EX-2E-CAN 9*) and Miss Shoremar Rose (VG-87-4YR-CAN 6*). Nicole’s descendants are cows with well-attached udders, excellent feet and legs, stature, longevity and production. 2007 Royal Winter Fair Grand Champion Silverridge Leduc Noleta (EX-95-CAN) is a notable member of this family. Rose has proven ability to produce capacious descendants with well-attached udders, sound feet and legs and high production. Silverridge September Rae (GP-4YR-CAN), the new Canadian 6-YR-Old Champion for Fat, is a great example of what this family can do.

The Dykxhoorns generously volunteer their time with the Elgin County Holstein Club, the Aylmer CRC Church, 4-H, their local school boards and the Elgin County Milk Committee. Charlie is also a DHI Delegate and Dan was a 2014 Dairy Youth Award Winner.

It is without a doubt their passion for the Holstein breed and keen eye for great cows combined with a drive to continually improve that has earned the Sundborg family their Suntor herd’s second Master Breeder Shield. Fred, Ruth, Kevin and their family feel the award is the ultimate in recognition by their peers, and are very proud to be receiving the honour for the second time.

The Sundborgs milk 55 cows in a tie-stall facility and farm 330 acres in Southwest Québec. Attention to detail, quality feed, and cow comfort are the keys to success with the Suntor herd, in addition to working with deep pedigrees and careful sire selection to improve on every generation. Additionally, the Sundborgs have taken an interest in polled genetics with approximately 20% of the herd now polled.

70% of the Suntor animals classified VG or EX contributed points towards the shield, however two families contributing significantly are Suntor Aeroline Joy (EX-5E-CAN 13*) and Craigcrest Igniter Roxetta (VG-87-3YR-CAN 4*). According to Kevin, Joy is a “once in a lifetime” cow and was the first great brood cow for Suntor. In the herd until she was 15 years old, Joy is the epitome of the longtime production cows for which Canada is known, and has proven ability to transmit her high type, production and longevity to her descendants. Roxetta’s daughter Suntor Income Rox completed 10 generations of VG or EX, and individuals from the Roxetta family are balanced, long-lasting cows with great type and mammary systems.

While this year is a year of recognition for the Sundborg family, it is also a year of change, as 2015 marks the year the farm will transfer from one generation to the next – proving all of their success has truly been a family effort.

Winning the third Master Breeder Shield for their Telford herd is icing on the cake for a lifetime in agriculture, and caps off nearly 60 years of farming for Jim Telford. Careful planning and herd management were keys in the years of success enjoyed by the Telfords, and with the vision of their third shield in mind, they tried and succeeded to keep animals around that would earn points for the herd.

While Jim and Julie dispersed the herd in 2010, Telford animals have excelled at their new homes and continued to collect points towards the Telfords’ shield. Prior to the dispersal, they focused on longevity and production, and used classification as a tool to determine which animals to keep in the herd. Only animals scored GP or better by their second lactation were kept, resulting in many multiple star brood cows.

With three shields, all cows contributing to each shield descend from the same three cows purchased in the 1960’s for $300 total. Herd favourites and contributors to the newest shield are Telford Diane Aeroline (EX-2E-CAN 7*), Telford Zelda (EX-90-CAN) and Telford Abby Lheros (VG-87-4YR-CAN 2*). Diane has proven ability to transmit her best qualities to her progeny with 12 descendants combining for 61 points, while Zelda and her descendants are noted for their big production. Similarly, Abby stands as the highest producing cow bred by the Telfords who, at 10 years old, continues to produce high volumes of milk and has nearly 130,000 kg of milk to date.

Jim is active in their church community and enjoys retirement, while Julie and son Josh each have their own prefixes and continue to own some cattle. The family also owns a ranch where they house beef cattle and race horses.

Earning the second Master Breeder Shield for their Walnutlawn herd is confirmation to the Zehr family that since winning their first Shield in 2000, they have continued to successfully breed a herd of cows with a balance of high type and great production.

Burnell, Darlene, Adam and Bethany milk 60 cows in tie-stall facility, and farm 390 acres of land in Ontario’s Oxford County. Classification and milk recording are the two tools the Zehrs peg as the key to their herd’s success. Both allow them to identify the cows that rise to the top of the herd. Recently genomics have been a huge asset as well, and Burnell and Adam foresee genomics being very valuable as they strive to earn a third Shield.

Herd favourites exemplifying the kind of cows found at Walnutlawn are Walnutlawn Gibson Jessica (EX-94-3E-CAN 4*), Walnutlawn Raider Nectarine (VG-89-4YR-CAN 2*) and Tedesco Mark Pearl (VG-87-4YR-CAN 2*). Nominated as a finalist for the 2014 Cow of the Year, Jessica is a descendant of the “Jewel” family, a family known for its longevity, strength, feet and legs, udders and fat percent. Nectarine and the entire “fruit” family have proven ability to pass on their extreme type from one generation to the next, and descendants of Pearl are solid cows with great production, feet and legs and longevity. Additionally, the Zehrs have had success marketing their herd both domestically and internationally with Australia serving as their strongest market by far.

The Zehr family is well-respected in their community earning them the honour of Oxford County’s Farm Family of the Year in 2013. Additionally, both Burnell and Adam are Official Judges with Holstein Canada and the entire family is active in their church community.

Howard Augustine comes from a long line of farmers who came to Canada as Empire Loyalists. As the fifth generation to farm on the family’s current farm, Howard and his wife Ineke are very grateful for the work ethic passed on from generation to generation and believe the “if you don’t work, you don’t eat” attitude has played a large part in earning their herd’s second Master Breeder Shield. Additionally, Howard and Ineke are thankful to the many family members, friends, neighbours, breeders, herdsmen and industry advisors who have had a hand in the herd’s success.

Howard and Ineke milk 35 cows in a straw pack and flat parlour facility, and farm 200 acres in the Niagara Region of Ontario. The advice and knowledge of other farmers, as well as the use of top proven bull semen are the tools Howard and Ineke say are the most significant in their herd’s success. In fact, only one animal earning points towards the Shield is the result of embryo transfer.

Three cows whose descendants have contributed significantly to the Augustines’ second Shield are Whitnell Inquirer Lola (EX-95-2E-CAN 3*), Whitnell Dynamic Dolly (VG-11YR-CAN 3*) and Whitnell Rocket Ruth (VG-11YR-CAN 3*). The 2007 Reserve All-Canadian 5-YR-Old, Lola and her descendants excel in dairy strength and have a great will to milk. Descendants of Dolly contributed the most points to the award and are well-mannered with great udders. Ruth was the herd’s first starbrood cow and has proven ability to transmit her high production and great longevity to her family.

For the Augustines, earning a Master Breeder Shield is like winning an Academy Award for breeding cows. They are proud to receive their second shield – a symbol of recognition for a job well done.
