Unit Descriptor This unit specifies the outcomes required to conduct routine monthly, six-monthly and yearly inspections and testing of fire extinguishers and fire blankets at a customer’s premises. Pre-Requisites There are no pre-requisites or co-requisites for this competency unit Application of the Unit This unit of competency supports fire service technicians responsible for routinely inspecting and testing fire extinguishers and fire blankets on customers’ premises. Conducting the assessment

Observe the student during the assessment process to establish and oversee the evidence gathering process to ensure it remains valid, reliable, fair and flexible.

Communicate with the student to agree on the commencement of the assessment. Where possible, observe the student undertake the tasks as outlined. Record your observations in the assessor checklists. Where a checklist point is not appropriate, write "N/A" in the space provided. Gather supporting documentation where available and appropriate (as evidence) Incorporate allowable adjustments to the assessment procedure without compromising the integrity of the

assessment. Once the assessment has been submitted record your comments in the sections provided or Once the

STUDENT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION (GENERAL INFORMATION)

This information is to be handed to each student to outline the assessment requirements.

Instructions This assessment requires you to demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct the six-monthly and yearly inspection and, if necessary, testing of fire extinguishers and fire blankets in accordance with the Australian Standards 1851-2012. The unit applies to those people that are assigned the job role of fire service technician or fire safety officer in any working environment.

Written Components of this assessment tool The written components of this assessment tool consist of answering questions and completing maintenance registers and logs based on the information you have learned and if required, researched. Your assessor will guide you through this assessment.

Practical Assessment The practical assessment task for this unit consists of conducting an inspection of fire extinguishing and fire blanket equipment and performing basic maintenance and repairs as required. Your assessor will guide you through this assessment.

Conditions of Assessment 1. The assessor will provide you with clear instructions about what you are required to do for each assessment task. 2. Time frames and submission dates are to be determined by your assessor. 3. If you are unclear about what you have to do, please ask the assessor before you start. 4. Each person must be assessed as being competent in each assessment task. 5. You are allowed to use references, books and course notes during the assessment tasks where indicated in the

student instruction for a particular task however these resources must be properly referenced within your answers or on a separate sheet titled appropriately.

Grounds for stopping the assessment If at any time during the practical assessment you act in a way that puts yourself, other learners, equipment or property in any danger, the assessment will be stopped immediately. Your assessor will identify and record the dangerous act to you and refer the matter to the training manager for review. The training manager will then decide whether to re-schedule the assessment at a later time or in enforce the student discipline policy. If your assessment is re-scheduled, you may be required to complete part of all of the practical assessment again at that time, at the discretion of your assessor.

Referencing When using materials from published authors to support your assignment work remember to cite and reference the work correctly using the Harvard Referencing System or The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Sixth Edition. Bear in mind that material downloaded or accessed via the internet also requires correct referencing.

Reasonable Adjustments In the event that you have difficulty understanding the assessment tasks due to language or other difficulties, your assessor will attempt to make reasonable adjustments to the assessment paper in order to afford you every opportunity to achieve competency, including:

Completion of the written tasks verbally, with the instructor recording your responses to the written

questionnaire.

Completion of this assessment electronically, with the replies submitted electronically under examination conditions set by your assessor.

Late Submissions Late assignments will not be accepted unless the trainer has previously granted permission.

ASSESSMENT TASK 1 – WRITTEN ASSESSMENT STUDENT INFORMATION

General Instruction Your assessor will decide with you whether you can or will complete the theory assessment in an oral or written format.

If you complete the assessment orally, your assessor will record your answers for you using a suitable method at an appropriate time, before attempting the next assessment task. You are required to sign-off on the recorded responses to indicate that they have accurately captured your response.

If you undertake a written assessment, you must write your answers using the assessment tool provided. This task is to be completed and submitted independently.

Conditions of Assessment

1. Ensure that you have a copy of the Australian Standards AS 1851-2012 before attempting this assessment task.

2. This written assessment consist of questions that must be answered in class time. 3. You are allowed to ask your assessor about any matters in the assessment task that you do not understand. 4. This assessment task will only take 60 minutes to complete. You must answer all questions. 5. All questions must be replied to without any assistance. This is an open book written assessment completed

ASSESSMENT TASK 1 – WRITTEN ASSESSMENT ASSESSOR INSTRUCTIONS

Assessment Guidelines You will need to have read the student information section of this task first before commencing with this task. You must discuss with the learner whether they will undertake the theory test in an oral or written format.

If a student takes the test orally, you are required to document the responses provided by the student and have the learner countersign these. This is to indicate that the student acknowledges that you have accurately captured their intented responses.

If a learner undertakes a written test, they will need to write their responses on the final test provided.

Conducting the Theory Assessment

1. You must provide each learner with a copy of the assessment task at the beginning of this unit. 2. During each session, up until the moment where the student undertakes the assessment task the students are

allowed to ask you questions about the meaning or interpretation of the questions contained in the test. You may clarify the significance of any language or questions without giving away the answer.

Marking the Theory Assessment Suggested responses (model answers) to the questions are included in this document and will vary depending on the learners own research and experiences within this field. You should refer to the suggested or model answers when considering the responses provided by students, but as a guide only. An answer provided may still be correct in a particular circumstance, even though it is not listed here as a model answer. You must indicate, for each question, whether the answer is satisfactory (tick) or unsatisfactory (cross). You may ask the learner questions once they have submitted their assessment task, to clarify any answers that are not clearly explained.
