IamabsolutelydelightedtobebackatComptonParktodayafterwhathasbeenalongeightmonthssincethefirstlockdowncameintoplace.TheplayersaredelightedtobebackandwehopetocontinueourtransitionbackintoComptonParkfulltimeoverthecomingmonthsandstartusingthefirstclassfacilitiesoncemore.I’dliketothankLauraNicholls,RachelHutchinsonandSteveCullisformakingtodayhappen.Theirsupportforthewomen’sandgirls’sectionisandalwayshasbeenfirstclass.
TodayseesourfirstcompetitivefixturesinceLongEatonUnitedbackinOctober.Thefourweeklockdownhasbeenusedwellbyallandlastweek’sstrongperformanceagainstaverygoodtierthreeoutfitsuggeststheplayersareinagoodplace.Thestaffdeservehugecreditfortheeffortputintoensurethegirlsremainedfitandreadythroughoutthepastmonth.

“It had been a very tough game. Watching from the bench in the first half, I thought we were the better team but we probably weren’t clinical enough.”
IT WAS LITTERALLY A GAME OF TWO HALVES,forJadeCrossinlastseason’sBirminghamCountyCupquarter-finalagainsttoday’sFACupopponentsStourbridge.
Crossspentthefirst45minutesofthatJanuarymeetingsatonthesubstitutes’bench–butshethenturnedsuper-subatthestartofthesecondperiod.
Just two minutes after entering the fraytheprolificstrikerhitthenettobringWolveslevelat1-1,whichremainedthescoreuntilthefinalwhistle.
Thatmeantapenaltyshoot-out,whichWolveswon4-2tofinallyovercomebattlingopponentswhohadbeliedtheirstatusasmembersoftheWestMidlandsLeagueDivisionOneSouth–twotiersbelowNationalLeagueWolves.
AndCross,reflectingonthegame,admits: “It was one hundred per cent morereliefthanjoywhenShannieJenningsscoredthepenaltythattookusthrough.
“Ithadbeenaverytoughgame.Watchingfromthebenchinthefirsthalf,Ithoughtwewerethebetterteambutweprobablyweren’tclinicalenough.

“Stourbridgewereabitopen,butthatwasbecausetheywantedtolookforagoalthemselvesandtheygotoneabouttenminutesbeforehalf-time.
“When I went on at the start of the second halfweneededtoequaliseasquicklyaspossible,andafterwedidthatitwasusthatdidmostoftheattacking.
“ButfairplaytoStourbridge,theydefendedreallywellandprovedoverthecourseofthegamethatthey’reabetterteamthantheLeaguethey’reinsuggests.
“They’vemadeanexcellentstarttothisseason and so I’m expecting another difficultmatch,butwe’vealsohadagreatstartandwe’refeelingveryconfident.”
TheGlassGirlshavewonallthreeoftheirleaguegamestodate,withagoalaggregateof25-0,whilecomingthroughfourqualifyingroundsoftheFACup.
MeanwhileWolvesalsohavea100percentleaguerecord(goalaggregate37-3)andhave won their two FA Cup ties to reach today’sfirstroundproper.
To date in the current campaign Cross has struck11goals,includingoneineachoftheFACupvictoriesoverSuttonColdfieldTown(2-0)and,vitally,thesecondhalfwinnerinahardearned1-0awaywinagainstLongEatoninthelastround.
“I’mhappyenoughwithmyowngoaltallysofar,”saysCross,“butmoreimportantlywe’regettinggoalsfromagoodnumberofplayersandifwecankeepthatupitwillstandusingoodsteadfortherestoftheseason.
“It’snotbeenaneasyseasonsofarintermsofmatchpreparationbecauseoftheproblemsthatlockdownandbeinginTierThreehavecausedus,butthat’sbeenthesameforeveryotherteamandsoit’sbeenacaseofjustgettingonwithit.
“Ourplayershavehadindividualtrainingschedulesandwe’vealsobeenhavingone-to-onecoachingsessionsonceaweekwithamemberofstaff,sowe’vekeptupourfitnesslevelsandnowwejustwanttogetbacktoplayingregularfootball.
“We’venowgotanotherbreakfrommatchesoverChristmas,butwedon’tintendeasingoff–we’rebackintrainingonthe27thofDecember,hopefullywithourfirstmatchafterthatanFACupsecondroundtieonJanuarythethird.
“ThatwillobviouslydependonbeatingStourbridge,andweknowfromlastseasonthatwillbedifficult–butwe’llbefavouritesagainandthistimewe’llbeaimingtogetthejobdonein90minutesratherthaninapenaltyshoot-out.”

Havingstartedplayingfootballaroundsevenyearsofage,Rebecca‘Becky’ThomasjoinedtheyouthranksatWolves,movingherwaythroughtothesecondX1asa15year-old.
A month short of her 16th birthdayshesatonthebenchforthefirstteam,andacoupleofmonthslatermadeherfirstteamdebut,replacingNatalieHallbetweenthesticksinaCountyCupvictoryoverDarlastonTown.
The2007/08seasonsawherinitiallybehindtheexperiencedHallforthestartofthecampaign,beforeeventuallysecuringherfirststart,againintheCountyCup,asshekeptacleansheet,andthefinalscorelineof20-0toWolvessuggestsshewasn’tover-taxed.As2007turnedinto2008,HalljumpedshipandBeckytookoverasfirstchoice.Apermanentfeatureuntiltheconclusionoftheseason,shemanagedfourcleansheetsinaWolvesteamwhichfinishedfourthinthetable.
WithmanagerDaveBalllookingfor a more experienced keeper forthe2008/09term,NaomiBrutonreturnedtotheclubandThomaswasrelegatedtotheReserves,featuringonlyacouple
oftimesforthefirstteam.Thefollowingtermhowever,shewasanearever-present,missingjustthreegamesandhelpingWolvestofifthplaceintheleagueandthefinaloftheBirminghamCountyCup.
The summer of 2010 saw NatalieHallreturntoWolvesandThomas,lookingforregularfirstteamfootball,tooktheopportunitytomoveacrosstheBlackCountrytorivalsSportingClubAlbion.ThemovepaidoffinstantlyforherasshehelpedAlbioncapturetheMidlandCombinationtitleattheseason’send,includingapairofleaguevictoriesoverWolves.
Over the next six seasons she helpWestBromwichAlbion,astheywerenowcalled,es-tablishthemselvesintheNorthernPremierDivisionandtothebrinkoftheSuperLeaguein2016asAlbioncapturedtheleaguetitle,butlostouttoBrighton&HoveAlbionintheendofsea-sonplay-off.
Inthesummerof2017,afterfeaturingover150timefortheBaggies,shemovedontoNottinghamForest,wheresheremainedforacoupleofseasonsbeforereturningtoWolveslastsummer.Nowamoreexperiencedplayer,shehassetabouthelpingWolvesgetbackintotheNorthernPremierDivision,anachievementshewouldalmostcertainlyhaveattainedlasttermbutfortheCovidepidemic.

Club HistoryFormedin2008,StourbridgeFCLadiesbeganlifeinDivision2oftheBirminghamCountyWomen’sLeague.Havingestablishedthemselvesinthedivision,theythenbegantorisethroughtheleaguesundermanagerAndyFisher.Theycapturedtheirfirsttrophyin2013/14when,afteraseason-longtusslewithCoundonCourt,theywontheDivision2title.ThatvictorywasbytheslenderestofmarginsastheteamsfinishedlevelonpointswithStour’sgreaterfire-power,111goalsin18games,seeingthemliftthetitle.
WithbothteamspromotedthebattlewascontinuedthefollowingterminDivision1.Again,attheseason’sconclusion,thepairwerebattlingitoutforthehonoursandthistimeitcametoastraightshoot-outwhen,byaquirkofthefixturelist,theymetintheseason’sfinalfixture.ThistimeitwasCoundonCourtwhocapturedthetitlebyasinglepointthoughbothteamswereagainpromoted.
TheGlassgirlswerenowonarollandsettledwellintothePremierDivisionoftheleague.UnabletochasedownLeagueChampionsTamworth,theydidfinishthetermasrunners-upandwithitathirdconsecutivepromotion.TheywerestillabletocapturehonoursthisseasonwhendefeatingStarlandStAnne’sintheOpenCuptocapturetheirfirstknock-outtrophy.TheseasonalsosawthemcompeteintheWFACupforthefirsttimewithavictoryoverLeekCSOBbeingfollowedbyalosstohigherdivisionoppositioninBurtonAlbion.
The2016/17seasonsawthementertheWestMidlandsWomen’sLeagueinDivision1South,achievingaveryrespectablemid-tablefinish.Thiswasfollowedbyafurthertwomid-tablepositionsastheybecameanestablishedteamwithoutreallychallengingforthetopofthetable.LastseasonwasverysimilaruntiltheCovidvirusbroughtanearlyendtoproceedings.
Thisseasontheystartedwell,withvictoriesinallthreeleaguefixturespriortothelatestlockdown,netting25goalsandconcedingnone.TheyhavefaredevenbetterintheFACup,havingnegotiatedfourtiestodate,scoring22goalsandbeatinghigherleagueopposition twice which has seen them reach the First RoundProperforthefirsttimeintoday’stie.

StourbridgeWith Stourbridge being a relatively young club the meetings between today’s combatants are limited. The teams have met only once before in a tight affair last season in the Birmingham County Cup.
ThefixturetookplaceatCastlecroftinJanuaryofthisyearandwentallthewaytopenalties.Wolveshadthebetterofthechancesinthefirsthalfbutitwasthevisitorswhotooktheleadbeforethebreak.DaniRangerfoundherselfwithspaceintheWolvesboxandslottedhomepastdebutantkeeperMillieConod.
WolvesmanagerDanMcNamaramadeacoupleofchangesatthebreak,bringingonJadeCross,JamilaPalmerandAndreaBarnetttoboostWolves’attackingoptionsanditmadeaninstantimpact.ItwasJadeCrosswhonettedWolves’equaliserwithherfirsttouchofthegameandtryastheymight,neithersidewasabletomustermuchmoreintheoppositionbox.
ForallWolves’attackingintenttheGlassgirlssoakedupwaveuponwaveofpressurebutheldoutuntilfulltime.
