Brothers and sisters,

Once a year we dedicate a special day to

celebrate, thank and honor the gift of Moth-

erhood. Mothers are very special people to us. They nurture,

love, forgive, guide, support, and tend to our many needs.

Since last year’s Mother’s Day celebration, we now know new

mothers, including expecting mothers awaiting the birth of

their children. We also remember our mothers who have died

since last year and the impact they made in our lives. We pray

for them, for mothers who are grieving the death of a child,

as well as for those who have been unable to bear children.

Motherhood is a nourishing, life-giving role — not only

biologically, but also spiritually. There are women among

us who have adopted children or mentored others in life-giving

ways, too. May we use this day to truly celebrate, thank and

honor our mothers and mother figures in our lives! If you wish

to remember your mother living or deceased, it is not too late

to add her name to our special Mother’s Day Novena prayers.

The month of May is devoted to Our Blessed Mother Mary –

the woman who bore Christ, and whom He himself gifted us

with as Our Mother when he said to the Apostle John,

“Behold your Mother.” (John 19: 26-27) In addition to Our

Blessed Mother, I wish to share with you the stories of some

Saintly Mothers. I hope these holy women inspire you to

appreciate the gift of Motherhood.

St. Monica

St. Monica was a mother of steadfast prayer. Her son, St.

Augustine, was not always a saint! For many years, she

suffered and prayed for her rebellious and wayward son. She

followed him from Africa to Rome in order to watch over

him. St. Monica never gave up on her son. She is an example

to all mothers that our ultimate goal should be the salvation

of our children.

St. Gianna Molla

St. Gianna was a wife, a mother and a doctor. She lived out

her Catholic faith daily. Faced with a high-risk pregnancy,

when doctors told her that only an abortion would save her

own life, she chose life for her baby.

St. Teresa of Calcutta

St. Mother Teresa may not have had any biological children,

but she had thousands of spiritual children. She cared for

those whose own mothers' had forsaken and abandoned

them. She met their physical, emotional and spiritual needs

by caring for them with the love of Christ. Her compassion

and empathy are an example for all mothers.

St. Zelie Martin

St. Zelie Martin and her husband, Louis, were canonized by

Pope Francis in October 2015. St. Zelie is best known as the

mother of St. Therese, the Little Flower; but all five of her

living children entered the religious life. This gives us insight

into the emphasis on living a life for God that was present in

the Martin home.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton was a dedicated wife and mother of

five children. When her husband passed away, she was left as

a single mother with no money. She opened a school in her

home which eventually led to her establishing the first Catho-

lic school in the United States. She is an example of overcom-

ing the obstacles and hardships we face in our lives.

Happy Mothers’ Day! In love, let us together glorify Christ’s Holy

Name.

Hermanos y hermanas,

Una vez al año dedicamos un día especial

para celebrar, agradecer y hacer honor al

don de la maternidad. Las madres son personas muy especiales

para nosotros; ellas educan, aman, perdonan, guían, apoyan y

atienden nuestras muchas necesidades. Desde la celebración

del Día de las Madres del año pasado, muchas mujeres han

pasado a ser madres, entre ellas las que están embarazadas y

que esperan el nacimiento de sus hijos. También recordamos a

nuestras madres que murieron desde el año pasado y la manera

en que influyeron en nuestras vidas. Ofrecemos nuestras ora-

ciones por ellas, por las madres que sufren la muerte de un

hijo, así como por aquellas que no han podido tener hijos. La

maternidad es una labor que alimenta y da vida, no solo de

manera biológica, sino también espiritual. También hay

mujeres entre nosotros que han adoptado hijos o han sido

mentoras de otras personas para darles vida. ¡Espero que

aprovechemos este día para celebrar, agradecer y honrar

verdaderamente a nuestras madres y a las figuras maternas

en nuestras vidas! Si desean recordar a su madre, viva o difunta,

no es demasiado tarde para agregar su nombre a nuestras

oraciones especiales de la novena del Día de las Madres.

El mes de mayo está dedicado a Nuestra Madre Santísima, la

Virgen María ― la mujer que dio a luz a Cristo y que Él mismo

nos regaló como nuestra madre cuando le dijo al apóstol

Juan: “Ahí tienes a tu madre” (Juan 19: 26-27). Además de

Nuestra Madre Santísima, quiero compartir con ustedes las

historias de algunas madres santas. Espero que estas santas

mujeres los inspiren a apreciar el don de la maternidad.

Santa Mónica

Santa Mónica fue una madre de oración perseverante. Su hijo,

San Agustín, ¡no siempre fue un santo! Por muchos años, ella

sufrió y oró por su hijo rebelde y descarriado; lo siguió desde

África hasta Roma para velar por él. Santa Mónica nunca se

dio por vencida. Ella es un ejemplo para todas las madres de

que nuestro objetivo final debe ser la salvación de nuestros

hijos.

Santa Gianna Molla

Santa Gianna fue esposa, madre y médica. Vivió su fe católica

todos los días. Cuando se le diagnosticó un embarazo de alto

riesgo, cuando los médicos le dijeron que solo un aborto le

salvaría la vida, ella escogió la vida del bebé.

Santa Teresa de Calcuta

Aunque la Santa Madre Teresa no haya tenido hijos biológi-

cos, tuvo miles de hijos espirituales; se encargaba de aquellos

cuyas propias madres los habían desamparado y abandonado.

Se ocupó de sus necesidades físicas, emocionales y espirituales

cuidándolos con el amor de Cristo. Su compasión y empatía

son un ejemplo para todas las madres.

Santa Celia Guérin

El Papa Francisco canonizó a Santa Celia Guérin y a su esposo,

Luis, en octubre de 2015. Santa Celia es mejor conocida como

la madre de Santa Teresa, la Pequeña Flor, pero todos sus

cinco hijos vivos ingresaron a la vida religiosa. Esto nos da una

idea del énfasis que se daba en la familia Martín a vivir una

vida dedicada a Dios.

Santa Isabel Ana Seton

Santa Isabel Ana Seton fue una dedicada esposa y madre de

cinco hijos. Al morir su esposo, se quedó como madre soltera

sin dinero. Abrió una escuela en su casa ― lo que finalmente

la llevó a establecer la primera escuela católica en los Estados

Unidos. Ella es un ejemplo de cómo superar los obstáculos y

las dificultades que enfrentamos en nuestras vidas.

¡Feliz Día de las Madres! Con amor, glorifiquemos juntos el Santo

Nombre de Cristo.

SAINT DAMIEN OF MOLOKA’I (1840-1889) May 10

In the mid-1990s, a heavily bearded, bespectacled Robin Wil-

liams appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, whose

host was clearly taken aback. Letterman inquired as to why

the wild look. Uncharacteristically subdued, the usually manic

comic responded that he was producing and starring in a movie

about a most extraordinarily compassionate man, Damien, the

Leper Priest of Moloka’i.

Some saints transcend religious and ethnic boundaries to touch

the heart that beats in each human being: Francis of Assisi;

Mother Teresa; and, though Williams’ film was never complet-

ed, his admiration speaks, as does Damien’s statue outside the

capitol in Honolulu, of this newest saint’s universal appeal.

Far from his native Flanders’ idyllic beauty and rich culture,

Damien volunteered to bear Christ’s light into Moloka’i’s bleak

leper colony, building decent homes, opening schools, estab-

lishing clinics, planting farms, sharing the sufferings — and the

social stigma — of those with whom he delighted to identify:

“We lepers,” he would proudly say when finally he contracted

leprosy. Saint Damien challenges us to identify the lepers

of our own day, to examine our compassion for and our

OUR LADY OF THE FORSAKEN May 12

Our Lady of the Forsaken was originally the patron saint of a

fifteenth-century society dedicated to the care of the home-

less and mentally ill in Valencia, Spain. Nuestra Señora de los

Desamparados eventually came to be the object of general

veneration in Valencia, and she is now the patron saint of

the city.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA May 13

Starting on May 13, 1917, the Blessed Mother appeared on the

same date for six straight months to three shepherd children

in Fátima, Portugal. Among other things, her message was

intended to increase devotion to her Immaculate Heart and

to encourage praying the rosary daily for peace in the world.

FEAST OF FAITH The Creed

Following the readings and the homily, we stand together

and say or sing the Creed, our profession of faith. The Creed

is a solemn statement of belief, a “rule of faith” (General

Instruction of the Roman Missal, 67). It states the core of what

we believe about God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The language of the Creed is knotty and difficult at times,

precisely because its purpose is to express with precision

what we believe about God. The Creed that we pray most

often, the Nicene Creed, came out of the earliest ecumenical

councils: Nicea in 325 and Constantinople in 381. It originated

in a time of great controversy about the divinity of Christ, and

thus the longest section of the Creed relates to Christ, truly

human and truly God.

The Creed is both communal and personal: it is “we,” but it is

also “I.” In the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, it is only

after listening to the teaching of the Church and professing

faith in the Holy Trinity that the candidate is admitted to the

sacraments. So it is every Sunday. We listen to the Word, we

San Isidro Labrador (1070-1130) 15 de mayo

Isidro nació en Madrid y toda su vida trabajó como campesino

cerca de su ciudad natal. Siendo campesino trabajó siempre

con el mismo patrón, quien lo explotó y sometió a largos jorna-

les de trabajo. Aun así, Isidro se daba tiempo para asistir a la

Santa Misa y hacer oración a lo largo del día. Para él habían tres

amores indiscutibles: Dios, su familia y la tierra. Siendo muy po-

bres, él y su esposa María, fueron capaces de ayudar a otros

pobres, de tal suerte que la gente llegaba a su casa de piedra

por algo más que pan. De hecho, los mismos animales encon-

traban en ese hogar un lugar de descanso. En los pueblos de

América Latina, campesinos por naturaleza, se le considera a

Isidro como el patrono de los campesinos y este día se hace

una gran procesión con su imagen para pedir a Dios que bendiga

la semilla y los instrumentos de trabajo que serán utilizados en

el período de cosecha. San Isidro enseña que la explotación es

FIESTA DE LA FE El Santo Evangelio

La palabra evangelio significa “Buena Nueva”. La Sagrada

Escritura nos presenta cuatro “buenas nuevas” o evangelios:

Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan. Son cuatro estilos distintos de

presentarnos a Jesús, la Buena Nueva de Dios. Mateo nos

presenta a un Jesús nacido en el más puro de los judaísmos,

con tres conjuntos de 14 generaciones cada uno; a lo largo de

su relato nos dirá una y otra vez que Jesús es el Maestro de

maestros, es el cumplimiento de la Ley, en plenitud. Marcos,

por su parte, no nos presenta ningún relato de su nacimiento,

sino que va al punto: “Esta es la Buena Nueva de Jesucristo,

el hijo de Dios”. Puesto que su comunidad cristiana en Roma

es perseguida, mediante el sufrimiento de Jesús da sentido a

su sufrimiento martirial. Lucas encarna la realidad y sufrimien-

to de los pobres y desposeídos de este mundo, y para ello, les

cuenta el relato de un Dios que nace pobre entre los pobres;

más tarde, presentará a Jesús no sólo del lado de los pobres,

sino a la mesa, compartiendo ya el Reino de Dios por adelan-

tado. Juan nos dirá desde el principio lo que sus contemporá-
