Pentecost Sunday In Baptism and Confirmation, as well as Holy
Communion, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are poured out
upon us so that we might build up the Church and lead
others to faith in Jesus Christ. Today, take a moment to
consider the many gifts that you have been given,
especially spiritual gifts, and pray for the grace to
understand how you can utilize them most effectively
for the mission of your family, parish, and the Church
as a whole. The Holy Spirit is powerful in our lives if
we allow Him entry into our hearts. He is the Consoler,
the Advocate, the Paraclete. The Holy Spirit, as the
readings show us today, gives us joy and peace, a peace
unlike any other the world can give. When we respond
generously to grace and allow ourselves to be filled
with the Holy Spirit, we will set hearts on fire, one
person at a time, and be truly free. Archstl.org/dynamic

The Pastor’s Workshop A few points-
My thanks to the Garden squad that
recently cleaned out the winter
leftovers, and planted new flowers. Mary’s garden
area looks great. Thanks for the time and energy from
our volunteer ladies.
I mentioned at Mass that we are looking
down the road to repainting and
upgrading the decoration of the church at St. Joseph. Such a task is not done overnight. In
the meantime if we could begin the process of trying
to build up a designated fund for the interior work it
would be helpful. Church decorating is a very
specialized art. It needs to be planned out in time a
year or so, both for the decorating company and for
the raising of funds. I am asking that any fund raisers
we have from here on, half of the funds go into this
designated pot. In the meantime, if you have any
available funds that can assist us in getting started,
this would be helpful.
The Annual Catholic Appeal 2018 for both St. J and
St. A is going well. We have definitely seen more
involvement of new contributors. Tip O’Neill used to
say that politics is always local. The challenge each
year is to assist parish members to recognize that
many things as a Catholic community are regional –
and they need our attention and participation as well.
Catholic means ‘universal’, thus it throws a very wide
umbrella. The ACA does as well, touching pretty
much all the life organs of our St. Louis Catholic
faith. As I have said a number of times, even if it is a
$1…..it’s more than a 0. A zero gets you nowhere,
and is never helpful to the solution. Thanks to our
leaders at both St. J and St. A.
Finally, Monday (May 21) is my 41st
anniversary as a priest. Like everyone
who has had a career or vocation, you
know that some things went as you
dreamed and planned…..and other
things were complete surprises. So often in the
surprises, we have to surrender to the plan of God
(God is in control anyway!), and come to realize that
God has much more in store for us than we imagined.
Last year at this time, I visited for the first time both
Bonne Terre and French Village, after a phone call
from the Archbishop. Yes I have been in this
Archdiocese for more than 6 decades – and my world
was not so very large. I am pleased to be with you
now, and thank you for all the kindnesses shown this
past year. Let’s all pray for the new priests and
deacons to be ordained in the next few weeks for our
Archdiocese. 25 for the permanent Diaconate, and
2 for the Priesthood. This coming Saturday May 26
is the priesthood ordinations at the Cathedral.
