Dear Friends,

Bill Gildersleeve was in the line in front of me at the grocery store some many years ago. He wasn't alone. His two little daughters, who looked to be eight or nine years old, were helping Daddy shop. Well, adding things to his shopping cart might be more like it.

Checkout lines must be designed by someone who likes to torment parents. The assorted temptations on display include tons of candy, toys and maga-zines. So here you have it: a parent's just finished trekking up and down the aisles, trying to balance what's needed and what's affordable -- then it starts. The children see something at the checkout they just "have to have." Well, not really. But they want it anyway.

Say no, you're likely to face protests and griping. Say yes and you've given in to the manipulations of both children and store owners. My friend in the line faced a similar dilemma.

Now, before sharing Bill Gildersleeve's response to his children, let me tell you about the man. In our town, he has always been the local star. With looks, popularity and a lovely wife, his life looked to be a gift.

He was also blessed with a natural entrepreneurial spirit. He knows business and what people want. Put simply -- Bill is the image of success.

But parenthood's a different game. Success in sports, business, school is absolutely no assurance that you'll be a great parent. That's the job for which there is no training: you learn by doing. Frankly, most parents would admit that they make lots of mistakes along the way.

So I watched Bill and his girls with no little interest. How would this guy handle the minefield of de-manding youngsters? From where I stood, Bill hit a home run. He didn't say yes and he didn't say no. He calmly listened to their requests and quietly said: "Not this time, perhaps next time."

And they nodded, they understood. He hadn't re-jected the idea out of hand. He just wasn't acquiesc-ing right now.

No one likes being told "no." Whether you're eight or 80, we like to hear the word "yes." We want it our way. There are very few ways that "no" won't

be taken as a form of rejection. What Bill did was to listen first, then qualify his answer. That is a much more respectful way to handle people of all ages.

For example, if you tell me your opinion and I imme-diately say, "No, you're wrong," there's no way you're going to be open to my alternative point of view. But if, on the other hand, I listen to you re-spectfully, and then respond by affirming what you said and yet expressing a different view, it will go down better.

Now my point may be diametrically opposed to yours, but I bet you'll listen and consider what I'm saying. Why? Because I respected you and your thoughts well enough to affirm and consider what you said.

Communication is the key to bridge-building. In a world with deep rivers of misunderstanding and mis-trust, we need every bridge. And we build them by communicating our truth gently and showing real consideration for the other person and for his or her viewpoint.

That's what I think happened in the grocery store. Bill Gildersleeve didn't just say no, he opened a door to possibility. His daughters knew they were heard. I guess Bill has found success, too, in the place it mat-ters most, in his family.

Whether between family members or strangers, re-spect is always the best place to start. In His Love, Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor

Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Garden Phase II – Spring 2014

Once again, we would like to thank all who have helped support our Memorial Garden Grotto Project Phase I. We are very pleased with the workmanship and outcome of the memorial bricks and benches. Re-dedication of Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto will take place in late spring 2014, when we have milder weather. We have planted hundreds of flower bulbs, which will add to the beauty of spring. As spring 2014 approaches, we will now begin Phase II of the Memorial Garden Grotto Restoration. We are now offering another opportunity to purchase memorial bricks, for anyone who hasn’t had a chance to do so. As a reminder, memorial text can contain a message of remembrance for our deceased loved ones, but can also pave our “Living Walkway,” marking moments such as; Births, Baptisms, Birthdays, Weddings, Graduations, Holy Orders, Anniversaries…etc. In addition to the bricks, we are also replacing the top of the altar in the Memorial Garden with a stunning new, black granite piece deserving of its sacred purpose. The four sides of the altar top will be engraved in gold lettering to match the benches, one of which, (front) is already spoken for. There is an opportunity to purchase one of the remaining three sides of the grotto altar. Please call the rectory if you’re interested in dedicating or memorializing these special sites. The attached “Reservation Form” should be completed and dropped off in our parish office, along with the respective deposit (or payment in full). A copy of the reservation form will be stamped “RECEIVED” once reviewed and accepted by our parish office. We have limited 8” x 8” bricks which will be placed in the “Heart Center Area” of our grotto. However, we have ample space for the 8” x 4” bricks to accommodate all parishioners. If you have any questions, please contact the rectory office @ 516 541 3270. Thank you for your continued support. God Bless!

Parish Outreach

“Ministry of Consolation”

Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes “Ministry of Consolation” team. The most valuable gifts we can give are the gifts that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are espe-cially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one.

Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry’s call to love and care for one another.

Thank you so much to our coordinator, Deacon Frank Gariboldi and all our volunteers for embracing this beau-tiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260 if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your consideration.

“We Care Blankets”

Our “Care Blankets” group of volunteers continues to meet on Wednesday mornings from 10:00am to 11:30am, in Room 4, right next door to Parish Outreach. Since our group began in November 2009, a total of 1,038 gor-geous hand-made colorful blankets have been lovingly created. Thank you so much for the care, time and talent that goes into every beautiful creation, each a special gift for a very special child undergoing cancer care. We are happy to accept contributions of yarns, crochet hooks or knitting needles. If you would be interested in joining please give Parish Outreach a call at (516) 541-1260. The more the merrier!

For many parents, the 20 week ultrasound is a time of joy and wonder. Sadly, for some parents the ultrasound reveals devastating news of a grave or fatal prenatal diagnosis. It is hard for most of us to fathom the pain that these parents experience. More and more often, medical professionals are recommending abortion to parents in such cases. Overwhelmed parents may feel they have no other choice. Statistics aren't available, but some experts estimate that 60 - 80 % will decide to end their child's life. For those parents who choose to carry the child to term, they often face insensitivity; some parents have even been

told they are 'wasting the doctor's time'. Perinatal hospice offers life-affirming support to families who don't abort their child with a life-limiting diagnosis. Perinatal hospice is a philosophy that embraces the baby's life - before and after birth. It also assists parents in making preparations for their child's death. Ideally, perinatal hospice will include a team of obstetricians, perinatologists, labor and delivery nurses, neonatologists, NICU staff, chaplains and pastors and social workers. Services offered may in-clude special birthing classes, counseling on how to speak to friends and family regarding the child's diagnosis, and help in making decisions regarding palliative care. Lizabeth Summer, a palliative care coordinator explains, "Families can choreograph their child's very brief life with their family. Sometimes they may only have a matter of minutes." Brad Mattes of Life Issues Institute states, "As prenatal testing has become more common, more perinatal services have emerged. A listing by state is available at www.perinatalhospice.org. Parents must be proactive advocates for their child's short life. Even if there is not a program in the area, it's still the parents right to create a loving and com-passionate plan for themselves and their baby until God decides to take that child home." Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep is a nationwide network of professional photographers who volunteer their time to beau-tifully chronicle the brief time the family has with their baby. Be Not Afraid (BNA) is a private non-profit corporation "whose mission is to provide comprehensive, practical, and peer-based support to parents experiencing a prenatal diag-nosis and carrying to term. For more information see their website, www.benotafraid.net. Lindsey and Kevin Dennis' daughter Sophie was diagnosed at 20 weeks with anencephaly. Friends and family cele-brated during the brief 10 hours that she lived after birth. In spite of tragedy, Sophie was covered in love every mo-ment of her life. Lindsey wrote, "For those who wonder whether it is truly worth it to carry a child to term who has little chance of survival outside the womb, it is worth it beyond what words could say." A mother named Annette stated, "I really have a peace that we carried her to term. I know in my heart that I have given my daughter all that I could and loved her every day of her life." A father, James, said, "She didn't bring sadness. She brought joy, utter joy." Brad Mattes concludes, "Abortion doesn't help the grief process, but instead compounds it. Abortion actually increases the risks to the mother's physical and mental health. Instead, these grieving families deserve compassionate care and affirmation that their child's life has value and is a cherished part of their family."
