On Friday of this week, Apple unveiled their latest phone, the iPhone 11. When the first iPhone was launched in 2007, it was such a significant news story that the TV stations showed hundreds of people queueing at Apple Stores to get their hands on this new piece of technology. Years later, the hype of this product launch has altered as consumers have become more and more accustomed to the item and the message of how it can transform their lives. As is so often, within our consumerist world, individuals soon get bored with what is on offer; their attitude is largely been there, done that or seen that, got one. The truth is that the consumerist world can only really address our superficial needs. It can satisfy our short-time needs, but it is never really able to be long-lasting. If you want to get to the core of what it means to be human, then you need to look somewhere else. We need to search for the truth. It doesnt diminish with time; it increases - real truth is that which we find in true love. True love satisfies us today and tomorrow, because genuine love, when it is reciprocated, doesnt diminish; it grows and matures with age. For us, the greatest expression of love is to be found in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh and who came into the world to bring us salvation. This unique act of love has changed our world over the past two thousand years. For all their aspirations, I doubt whether the iPhone will last anywhere near as long as that!
