Bishop Declan arrived to confirm 53 young candidates from around the deanery. Musicians and singers from the various parishes formed an excellent music group to help lead the Celebration. Bishop Declan was very impressed with the young people and how well they all performed on the night. For Fr David and myself it has been a month long process and we have been ablely helped by a team of four catechists. Fr David lead all the sessions on the Sunday afternoons and his skill and enthusiasm as a teacher was evident to all. He may have been retired for a while, but he hasn t lost his ability to hold the attention of a group of 35 students as he explained the Sacraments of Confirmation to them. On Sunday afternoon, we had a Penitential Service for the Comfirmandi as well as a rehearsal and both were fantastic. The engagement of our young people with the whole process was a credit to them and their families. On the night of the Confirmation they had their names called out in a packed Church and they stood up with confidence and declared I am ready and willing.I hope that in the next few months we will be able to test their readiness and see if they are willing to take on additional roles in the parish. They are now considered as Adults in the Faith so they have a right and a duty to make their voices heard. When you see them Im sure you will agree the church of today and tomorrow is going to be in good hands. However we must also be ready and willingto give them good examples and encouragement.
