Active Shooter/Mass Shooting Survival Guide

Proactive Prepping To Survive A Mass Shooting

A proactive approach is the best way to prepare for any situation. This is how you can

prepare yourself mentally and physically to survive a mass shooting/active shooter

situation:

● Be proactive in detecting trouble by practicing a high level of situational awareness when you travel anywhere.

● Whenever you go somewhere scan the crowd for anything that looks odd or out of place, trust your gut, if you have a bad feeling about something get out of there.

● Upon arriving at a new place immediately identify where at least 2 additional exits are besides the way you came in.  Plan your evacuation while the lights are on before the event starts so you are not left scrambling for cover in the dark.

● Avoid high profile events, opening nights, and politically/emotionally charged rallies ● If in a theater or other indoor location that is not level ground, seat yourself on the high

ground, it will provide a better view of a potential situation and more options. ● Sit near the aisle, preferably in a row near an exit.  You do not want to wait for other

people to take action if you choose to evacuate.  If you are in an Active Shooter Scenario There are 3 primary options you have if you find yourself in an Active Shooter situation. This is what we suggest to maximize your chances of making it through alive:

Option 1: Run

● This is the best option and should be taken if at all possible. ● Identify which of the exit routes you have identified is the safest and go for it.   ● Move quickly and stay low.  Seek cover along the way if you need to pause to scan

ahead or catch your breath. ● Once you have made it to the exit continue to evacuate until you are out of the line of

sight of the location. ● Once you are safe dial 911 and seek any authorities that may be in the vicinity. ● Windows are good escape options if you are not too high off the ground and if doors are

blocked.

Option 2: Shelter In Place

● If all exits are blocked you may be forced to shelter in place.  Only do this if it is impossible to escape immediately.

● Find something solid to take cover behind.  A modern assault rifle and many handguns will easily pass through drywall, wood, furniture, and even thin metal.  Find something concrete to shelter behind.

● If you are out of the line of fire and able to dial 911, call for help and provide as much information to the dispatcher as possible.

● Look for an opportunity to escape if one presents itself, or to move to a more secure area of concealment.

Option 3: Fight Back

● This is a last resort if you have no way to escape. ● Look for a window of opportunity, this may be when the shooter is distracted, looking

away, or reloading. ● First, throw whatever is available at the shooter, this will make them less likely to be able

to get off a precise shot.  This may include objects that are laying around or items you have on your person such as a phone, wallet, or keys

● Then, if you are able to rush them, use any improvised weapon you can find, shout and scream to amplify your intent and disrupt the shooter.  If you have more projectiles, throw them as you rush the attacker.

● If at all possible you should coordinate your attack with others.  It is much more likely to succeed if more than one person is rushing the attacker.  If you cannot talk directly to other people in the room, shouting “LET’S GET HIM” as you get ready to rush will hopefully provide enough leadership to encourage others to assist.

Be Aware, Be Prepared This is a terrible situation that no one wants to be in.  Remember to maintain a high level of situational awareness wherever you go and know where your exits are.  Always remember, Chance Favors The Well Prepared.
