Several years ago, a friend shared with me the good news that he and his wife were expecting their first child. I congratulated him, and then I asked if they were going to tell other people right away, or wait for a couple of months. I knew that there was an old standard that one did not announce a pregnancy until the third month, just in case the mother lost the baby. My friend said although his grandmother had urged him to wait, as was done back in her day, he and his wife decided to tell all of their friends right away. Instead of waiting to see if the baby was healthy, he said, they wanted their friends to start praying that the baby would be healthy. In short, they wanted a lot of people praying for a very long time. The importance of praying a lot and for a long time is Jesus’ message to us in today’s gospel reading. persistence teaches us patience; persistence tests our faith, something that God does all the time, to help us grow and remind us that we are dependent upon him, and not upon ourselves. Pastor’s Announcements: 1. His Holiness, Pope Francis, announced today at the Vatican that Archbishop Blase J. Cupich is a cardinal-designate and will be among the 17 new cardinals to be created at the consistory November 19, 2016, at the Basilica of St. Peter in Vatican City. “The news this morning that Pope Francis has named me to the College of Cardinals is both humbling and encouraging,” said Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago. “I offer my best wishes to the other Cardinals-elect, especially Kevin Farrell and Joseph Tobin, and I look forward to joining with them and the other cardinals as we work together with the Holy Father for the good of the Church… The role of Cardinal brings new responsibilities, but with your prayers and help, we will continue the task we have begun of renewing the Church in the archdiocese and preparing it to thrive in the decades ahead.” 2. Archbishop Blaise J Cupich, will celebrate a Mass to End Domestic Violence on Saturday, October 29th, at 5:15pm at the Holy Name Cathedral. Everyone is invited. He will preach on our need to reach out to victims of domestic violence and their children and work to build healthy relationships in our families. A reception in the parish hall will follow after the Mass. Fr. Kris

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING AT ST. CHRISTOPHER IN THE WEEK AHEAD:

"Notes" from Phil & Amy Be Thankful and Pray Without Becoming

Weary Jesus tells Us Persistence is a Virtue.

Today's Entrance Antiphon: To you I call; for you will surely heed me, O God; turn

your ear to me; hear my words. Guard me as the apple of your eye; in the shadow of your wings protect me. Our First Reading from Exodus: When Moses raised his arms to God in prayer, the battle went well. So Aaron and Hur supported his arms, lest the attackers defeat Israel. When they got tired, they used a rock to keep his arms up. By sunset, Israel won the fight. The Responsorial Psalm 121: Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Our Second Reading from 2 Timothy: Paul urged Timothy to remain faithful to sacred Scripture because God inspired it. God's inspired work, the source of wisdom in Christ, helps people learn goodness and holiness. The Gospel Acclamation: The word of God is living and effective, discerning reflections and thoughts of the heart. Our Gospel from Luke: Jesus taught a lesson about the power of persistent prayer by telling the story of a persistent widow who wore down a corrupt judge by continually demanding her rights. The judge issued a settlement in her favor, lest she do him in. Today's Communion Antiphon: Behold, the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, who hope in his merciful love, to rescue their souls from death, to keep them alive in famine. In a 5K run being persistent is so very often needed especially if you're trying to make your body do something it's not used to doing. At some point fatigue and weariness kick in and your mind has to take over on persistency. For me I think often of Australian Matthew Kelly saying "you want to be the very best version of yourself you can be." We all strive for that. We often don't know how or when hard work and persistence will come together and pay off but we none the less strive for that goal. What a great demonstration this past Tuesday for the Cubs to go into the 9th inning being down 5-2 and everyone already talking about a final game 5 match-up yet persistence of a team goal surprised all of them in unity and lo and behold they manufactured, bit by bit, an amazing 6-5 victory stunning themselves and everyone else. They wore something down at the very end and broke through to let their 2016 story continue to be scripted toward the next series and all that lies ahead. Jesus wants us to do the same in our life of prayer; be persistent not growing weary. With and through this incessant prayer, we open ourselves more fully to understanding God's will. Through faith in the power of prayer we experience God's love and assistance. The Christian Life, our Catholic Faith is nourished by the scriptures we read and by our received tradition (our most powerful prayer is the Mass). Prayers of praise, supplication, gratitude, and glorification, as taught in the Lord's prayer will bring you ever-closer to God. The "Our Father" is a beautiful recap of our Eucharistic Prayers we pray together at Mass. We can elaborate on types of prayer like the "Lord's Prayer" in our communication with God. Silent prayer may be without conscious thoughts, a simple being with God, loving Him, listening to Him. Let the Spirit Come Down, that's what psalms and music offer at Mass and more. Today a good song to reflect on would be Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up". That's another title of being "The Best Version of Yourself" that you can

“Notes” from Phil & Amy continued… be. Mass unites the Divine with earth. This lets you know that you can "Look for the good in people" as a form of prayer. Prayer can be cultivating a peaceful lifestyle so you have time to think about God. You'll be amazed at how you can pray even if you have the very busiest of life-styles. Whether structure or unstructured prayer, dwelling in God's Love is another way of praying always. Do you Glorify God with your life? Are you striving for being the best person you can be? Dedicate your activities to Him. Doris Day sings "Secret Love". Today we learn that the whole of life is prayer and the secret is love for the Lord. The Heart that is joined unto the Lord is One Spirit. We are trying to gather a group together to pilgrimage to the Holy Door at Holy Name Cathedral Sunday afternoon, Nov. 6th. $59 is suggested for the bus and food. In this winding down of the Jubilee Year of Mercy these doors will not simply allow us to enter a church, but allow us to enter into a new way of living in the mercy of God just as our Mercy Sundays have offered to us. We hope you can join us. Next week we'll share what one can do to receive a special Plenary Indulgence. God's Love, Phil & Amy P.S. Thank you Tom & Sharon for your "grand parenting" ministry which has allowed us to do our music ministry through these past many years. Peace be with you Tom.
