Dear Parishioners, Jesus is God. He can do all things. Does he need the help of the seventy-two he sends out two by two in today’s Gospel? No, and yes. No, because he saves the world all by himself. Yes, however, because he wants humanity to assist him in building the kingdom and bringing salva-tion to all humankind. He is setting in motion the building up of the Church that will take up the reins of leadership after he has ascended into heaven. Jesus sends these men out to heal the sick,

forgive sins, cast out demons and announce the kingdom of God. The harvest is plenty, the laborers are few. By chapter ten of Luke, which we heard from today, Jesus has already begun his final journey to Jeru-salem – and to Calvary. Jesus knows his days are numbered, but the whole world must be touched by his message. The chosen ones are told to travel lightly. All they can carry with them besides the clothing on their back is total trust in the providence of God to meet their needs. Hospitality would be the measure by which they would gauge the success or failure of their mission. Where God’s word was welcomed, people would also welcome those who preached it. Likewise, where the Gospel was rejected, these disciples would shake the dust from their feet and move on to other towns. History shows ac-ceptance and rejection from Jewish and Gentile communities alike. The underlying truth of these instructions, it seems, is this: Whether peo-ple want to listen or not, regardless of whether they come to believe it or not, the Kingdom of God is [in fact] at hand. And this fact re-quires something of everyone – repentance and faith. Jesus has given the disciples power over serpents and scorpions – they have nothing to fear if they trust in the Lord. The same is true for all who believe. Remember that Jesus said, the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few. The laborers are you and me. They are not some “other people.” So let’s start the work of the kingdom today by traveling lightly, shedding the excess baggage of sin and worry, and depending on God to complete the great work he has begun in us. Isaiah said, The Lord’s power shall be known to his servants. This explains the unparalleled success of the early Church’s first missionary excursion. From Jerusalem to the ends of the earth, all will experience the comfort and love of a merciful God thanks to the preaching of a cho-sen few.

Fr Tad.

LOVE AND TRUST Little love; little trust. —English proverb

Padre J Guadalupe Vazquez Gonzalez

Sunday Children’s Program “Finding God”

Continuous Faith Formation Program Faith Formation is more than a subject to be taught,

it is an invitation to a way of life” Joe Paprocki. Registration Information for 2019-2020

All baptized children 6 to 12 years old who are attending public schools may register for our program. Parents are encouraged to enroll their children every year in our ongoing Faith Formation classes to help them to increase their knowledge and love of Jesus and the Catho-lic Church. Receiving the sacrament of Eucharist for the first time is not the end of faith formation; but a milestone of a life-long journey called discipleship. For those who want to prepare to receive the First Com-munion, children will receive the sacrament in the second year in our program. Registration Forms are available at the entrances to the Church and in the Parish Office. All new registrations must provide a Certificate of Baptism even if baptized at Saint Clare’s. In order to serve you better and prepare all the re-sources we need we are asking you to register your child before July 31st. when the regular registration period ends. Completed registration forms can be turned into the Parish Office, or mailed to:

Saint Clare Parish 725 Washington Street Santa Clara, CA 95050 Attention: Paty Rascon, Faith Formation.

Also, you can put it into the Collection basket on Sun-days, just make sure you write on the envelope “Finding God Catechetical Program” Attention: Paty Rascon. Keep God first in your heart and in your life. Make Reli-gious Education for your children a priority. The Catechetical office is closed some weeks during the summer. During that time inquiries can be directed to the Parish Office at 408-248-7786. We will be contacting you with information regarding your child’s registration sta-tus as soon as possible upon our return. Paty Rascon, Catechetical Office 408.248.7786 X 102 [email protected]

GOD’S PROVIDENCE

Today’s readings celebrate God’s providence. No matter how wonderful (or heartbreaking) our relationships are, God always provides for us. No one cares for us the way God does. Isaiah delights us with a deeply intimate image of God caring for us “as a mother comforts her child.” The prophet describes us not as the usual “children of God,” but as “babies.” We should not resist this image, but rejoice in it. Trusting in God’s care, we can all let down our guard and rest like infants in the lap of our mother. Saint Paul’s trust in God allows him to be at peace like this. He boldly declares that no one can “make troubles” for him, because he has given himself completely to Je-sus. And when Jesus sends his disciples out to preach and heal, he challenges them not to provide for themselves, but to let faith be their guide. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s high summer now, school is out, the pace of work slows, and some people drift away. There are visi-tors in the churches every summer, and familiar faces are “among the missing.” Some find the summer’s call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing a Sunday, and so they make their way to Mass in unfamiliar places, watching the locals for clues as to when to sit or stand, where the Communion stations are. In answering the call, they keep the “sabbatical” rhythm of the Christian life: every seventh day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship. For centuries, there was no obligation to Sunday Mass in the sense of a written law, but Christians have always yearned to be together on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, during a persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping to-gether on Sundays. They responded, “Then take our lives, for without the Sunday we cannot live.” By a curi-ous coincidence, the appointed readings today center us on thoughts of peace. On our Independence Day, the experience of worship situated us in community, and evoked a commitment from us to be advocates of peace in all aspects of our society’s life.

— Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
