Dear Parishioners, We are all familiar with that moment when we walk into a wedding reception wondering where we will be seat-ed. Unless we are part of the actual wedding party, most of us would never dream of sitting at the main table, instead we tend to stay close to the door, looking for the table map or hoping that someone will call out “over here, you’re at this table.” Today’s Gospel makes use of this familiar scene, allowing Jesus to teach us about humility and its role in the kingdom. From the beginning of his ministry, Jesus made it clear

that the kingdom of God is pure gift, never earned or achieved by what we do. There is no special status or honor for those who come first, or those born into any particular race or family. Simply to be at the ban-quet is honor enough. And where we sit at this great feast is not for us to decide, but for the one who has invited us. It is clear that the Pharisees have invited Jesus not to engage him in dia-logue, but to observe him carefully and perhaps even to catch him out. Here Luke uses the Greek verb paratereo (to watch insidiously) to sug-gest this hostile intent, a verb he will use again when they try to test him on the issue of taxes to Caesar (20:20). Clearly, this was never meant to be a relaxed encounter. But as usual, it is Jesus who gets the upper hand, teaching them a lesson in humility. Observing how they chose the best seats for themselves, Jesus was able to perceive their priorities – to be seen, to be honored, to be important! But these are not the priorities of the kingdom, nor are they the criteria for deciding who will be invited to its banquet. In words that are radical and countercultural, even today, Jesus explains that the kingdom is for those who truly know their need of God and who live in the knowledge of their inability to repay him. Of course, in moments of difficulty knowing that need is a little easier, so the real test comes in the ordinary events of daily life. Humility comes in ordering our priorities, and how our faith informs our lives as married peo-ple, parents, single people, teenagers and children. Through baptism, we have been given a role in the building of the kingdom. As we gather today, there is no place of honor, except for the Lord who is our host. Today we come as we are: a people in need of God’s mercy – a people who need to experience his love and joy. We come not because it is a reward for what we have done, but in order to be changed. Christ is the one who invites us to share in God’s mer-cy and love. It is in his power that we are sent out to live what we have celebrated, and to invite others to share with us in the kingdom.

Queridos feligreses, Todos estamos familiarizados con ese momento cuando entramos a la recepción de una boda pregun-tándonos dónde nos vamos a sen-tar. A menos que formemos parte de la corte de la boda, la mayoría de nosotros nunca pensaríamos

en sentarnos en la mesa principal, sino que tendemos a permanecer cerca de la puerta, buscando el diagrama con las asignaciones de las mesas o esperando que alguien llame diciendo "aquí, tú estás en esta mesa”. El Evangelio de hoy hace uso de esta conocida escena, permitiendo que Jesús nos enseñe sobre la humildad y su papel en el reino.

Desde el comienzo de su ministerio, Jesús dejó en claro que el reino de Dios es puro regalo, nunca ganado o logrado por lo que hacemos. No hay un estatus u ho-nor especial para aquellos que vienen primero, o aquellos nacidos en una raza o familia en particular. Simplemente estar en el banquete es honor suficiente. Y dónde nos sen-tamos en esta gran fiesta no lo decidimos nosotros, sino quien nos ha invitado.

Está claro que los fariseos han invitado a Jesús no para entablar un diálogo con él, sino para observarlo cuidadosa-mente y quizás incluso para atraparlo. Aquí Lucas usa el verbo griego paratereo (observar atentamente) para su-gerir esta intención hostil, un verbo que él usará nueva-mente cuando intentan ponerlo a prueba sobre el tema de los impuestos al César (20:20). Claramente, esto nunca fue pensado para ser un encuentro tranquilo. Pero como de costumbre, es Jesús quien toma la delantera, ense-ñándoles una lección de humildad.

Al observar cómo ellos eligieron los mejores asientos para sí mismos, Jesús pudo percibir sus prioridades: ¡ser vistos, honrados, ser importantes! Pero estas no son las prio-ridades del reino, ni son los criterios para decidir quién será invitado a su banquete. En palabras que son radicales y contraculturales, incluso hoy, Jesús explica que el reino es para aquellos que realmente conocen su necesidad de Dios y que viven en el conocimiento de su incapaci-dad para pagarle.

Por supuesto que, en momentos de dificultad, saber que se tiene esa necesidad es un poco más fácil, por lo que la verdadera prueba viene en los eventos ordinarios de la vida diaria. La humildad viene al ordenar nuestras priorida-des y cómo nuestra fe construye nuestras vidas como per-sonas casadas, como padres, como personas solteras, como adolescentes y como niños.

A través del bautismo, se nos ha dado un papel en la construcción del reino. Al reunirnos hoy, no hay un lugar de honor, excepto el del Señor, que es nuestro anfi-trión. Hoy llegamos tal como somos: un pueblo que necesi-ta la misericordia de Dios, un pueblo que necesita ex-perimentar su amor y alegría. Venimos no porque sea una recompensa por lo que hemos hecho, sino para ser cambiados. Cristo es quien nos invita a compartir la misericordia y el amor de Dios. Está en su poder que se nos envíe a vivir lo que hemos celebrado, e invitar a otros a compartir con nosotros en el reino

This past week, we concluded our STAR assessments so that teachers can use the data to inform instruction that is respon-sive to student needs. For students in kindergarten through third grade, the early literacy assessment gives our teachers a number of ways to address learning gaps through differentia-tion and individualized instruction. We acknowledge that not everyone learns in the same way, but that all students can learn.

This coming week, teachers are preparing to welcome parents back to school. It’s the yearly opportunity for teachers to share the goals for the year with parents and for parents to clarify expectations. JOG-A-THON | Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019 | Bellomy Field at Santa Clara University The St. Clare School Jog-A-Thon is the highest grossing fund-raiser for the school. Santa Clara University, along with local vendors and business and individuals in our surrounding com-munity, partner with the school to put on this highly successful event that helps our school fund special projects. Last year, proceeds from the event allowed us to update our phone sys-tems, our wireless access network and our public address system. This year, we hope the Jog-A-Thon will help us pro-cure security camera systems and an integrated bell system. We are continuing to make sure our campus is safe for our students and our teachers. HUMILITY Humility is a virtue we don’t see much in our times. It seems that bragging, swaggering, and arrogance dominate our fashion for everything and our Internet conversations. Who hasn’t been irritated by the “trolls” who try (usually with bad grammar and poor spelling) to start an online fight with those whose opinions do not align with theirs? Our stores, catalogs, and online shopping sites are full of use-less items geared in use and price to the very rich, as ordi-nary, useful things seem to fade off the sales scene. As the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the middle class is fading away. What is the antidote to this? Humility is a good place to start. Devotion to God is worth more than riches. “The father of orphans and the defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. God gives a home to the forsak-en; [God] leads forth prisoners to prosperity.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The readings today center on mindfulness, awareness of where we stand in God’s plan. The mountain of Sinai carries a message of the majesty and distance of God, while Jesus’ presence as host of the banquet speaks of intimacy and mystery. September’s shadow calls us all to mindfulness as we prepare to return to life out-side of summer. The Christian life holds these two places of knowledge of God in careful balance. Even in the accounts of the Passion we see the table of the upper room in balance with the Mount of Olives. Altar means “high place,” yet it is also a table. The former liturgy of the Latin Rite began with the priest bowing at the foot of the altar’s three steps, chanting In-troibo ad altare Dei, or “I will go to the altar of God,” followed by the altar servers’ response, “The God who gives joy to my youth.” Many parishioners can recall and recite this scene by heart. As with so many things in liturgy, there are layers of

meaning in our worship. The altar table evokes memories of the high places once reserved for encounter with the ho-ly, and the intimacy of the table where hospitality draws us to share food and drink.—James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe Por esta época recordamos la natividad de María, madre de Jesús. María es muy popular entre muchos pueblos y en especial en los pueblos latinos. Al principio del mes de septiembre dos naciones toman la fiesta de su nacimiento para recordarla bajo el título de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre en Cuba y de Nuestra Señora de Coromoto en Ve-nezuela. La Virgen del Cobre fue descubierta en el siglo XVI por dos indígenas y un niño africano llamados los tres Juanes, cuando estos fueron al mar en busca de sal. Después de una fuerte tempestad ellos encontraron flotando sobre las olas una pequeña imagen de María con el Niño Dios en brazos. La imagen flotaba sobre una tabla que decía yo soy la Virgen de la Caridad. Milagrosamente la imagen es-taba seca. También en el siglo XVI la Virgen se le apareció al cacique de los indígenas Coromoto en Venezuela. Estos se resis-tían a la evangelización y ella se apareció sobre las aguas invitándolos al bautizo cristiano. Santa Teresa de Jesus assim o disse: “A humildade é a verdade”. Falava essa grande Santa da igreja para definir a importância da humildade no caracter de cada cristão. A humildade que a Primeira Leitura do Livro de Ben Sirá nos refere, é a que se define em todo aquele que reconhece e sente no seu coração, que tudo o que é e possui é pertença de Deus. Tudo vem de Deus e tudo para Deus vai. Voltemos os nossos pensamentos quando o próprio Jesus Se apresenta como “manso e humilde”. Nossa Senhora, glorificando as maravilhas de Deus, recorda que Ele “dispersou os soberbos e exaltou os humildes” ; tal como recitamos no “Magnificat”. Sendo Jesus manso e humilde não significa que era um “simplório” um coitadinho porque na Sua humildade Jesus expulsou os vendilhões do templo, denunciou os poderosos das injustiças perpetradas contra os pobres e as viúvas, chamou de hipócritas os escribas e fariseus. Ser humilde não é o ignorar, não é o ficar calado e imune ás injustiças, desiguldades sociais, não é o vangloriar-se do que tem e que é, mas é o ser imitador de Jesus e ou Maria nossa Mãe que na sua humildade glorificava Deus, acatando e obedecendo em tudo que lhe fora pedido; “Faça-se em mim segundo a Vossa vontade”. Ser humilde é reconhecer que sem Deus nada somos. A grandeza das pessoas mede-se pela sua capacidade de ser simples e serviçal, discreto e humilde, pois é esta a atitude radical de Deus que se fez um de nós em Jesus Cristo. Em complemento na segunda parábola do Evangelho a humildade redefina-se no dar sem espar nada em troca. A bondade de coração quando de parceria com a humildade aproxima-nos muito intimamente de Deus. Quando assim é; já conhecemos Deus e do que Este espera de nós. Não esperando nada do que se dá por amor é demais compensado por Deus.

Piquenique da Comunidade Portuguesa: O CPP leva a efeito no Domingo dia 29 deste mês o piquenique anual da nossa comunidade. Sendo este evento a actividade que mais reune divisas que são estas investidas nas actividades da nossa comunidade nesta paróquia; requer que todos e cada um de nós participe e contribua para este evento. O modo mais eficaz de tornar este evento bem sucedido: primeiro; participando e comprando os bilhetes para a comida que tem por ementa a mesma dos anos anteriores a este. Segundo; contribuindo com ofertas: sejam estas para o bazar, para o leilão ou para a rifa ou ainda donativos monetários que vão ao encontro de minimizar os custos que este evento implica.
