mass times & information

I pray that during these challenging times you have experienced the presence of Jesus and that you have been able to be his pres-ence to others. We are truly blessed here at St. James with the number of blessings that have been experienced by so many generous hearts. In addition to so many folks taking the time to assist us with contributions both in food and monetary contri-butions for our brothers and sisters in need. This week we received a tremendous amount of food from the Frog Force Novi High School Robotics Team organized by Megan Douglas. Other blessings include emails of support and concern sent to me and other staff members on a regular basis, neighbors taking care of neighbors, families growing closer to-gether. These are just a few of the many caring ways that show the presence of Jesus. Thank you! Thank you for

being a blessing!

I also want to thank you for your patience, understand-ing as well as your coop-eration during these chal-lenging times. As we begin the movement to gather together as a community of faith, we need to continue in that same spirit. Please check the website for further developments. The most re-cent procedures can also be found in our online bulletin.

We are working on a proce-dure for bringing communion to the homebound. Initially, Communion will be allowed to be taken by a family mem-ber to other family members that they are caring for. If someone requests the Eu-charist for one of their family members, the Eucharist will only be available after the 11:30 Sunday a.m. Mass. The Eucharist will not be placed in the pyx during commu-nion time.

God's PeaceWe will continue to evaluate the procedures we have in place. It’s a work in progress. It is important that every consideration be given for the health and well being of all of you, as well as finding creative ways to meet your spiritual needs.

I want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to enable you, our parishioners, to attend Mass and other liturgical functions safely while doing the best we can to create an envi-ronment of reverence and welcome. What is currently in place is temporary. Take heart and live with hope, that each week, each day, we are closer to coming back as a faith community around the table of the Lord. In the words of Blessed Solanus Casey; “Let us thank God ahead of time.”!

Love you all! God’s peace!

Fr. Ed Z.

From Your Parish NurseTAKE CARE OF YOUR KIDNEYS AND THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU

Your Kidneys May Not Work Well If You Have Diabetes. Diabetes can cause kidney disease, also known as chronic kidney disease (CKD). The good news is that there is a lot you can do to prevent kidney problems, including keeping your blood sugar and blood pressure under control. Having kidney disease increases the chances of having heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes. Keeping your kidneys healthy will help take care of your heart. What is the Best Way to Keep Your Kidneys Healthy? Keep your blood pressure below 140/90, or ask your doctor what the best blood pressure target is for you. Stay in your target cholesterol range. Eat foods lower in salt. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Stay active. Take your medications as directed. Who is More Likely to Develop Kidney Disease? Approximately 1 of 3 adults with diabetes and 1 of 5 adults with high blood pressure may have CKD. In addition

to diabetes and high blood pressure, other problems that put you at greater chance of kidney disease include: heart disease, obesity (being overweight), and a family history of CKD. Kidney infections and a physical injury can also cause kidney disease.

Eating healthy with kidney disease: it is a balancing act Your kidneys help keep the right balance of nutrients and minerals in your body. People with chronic kidney disease may need to avoid or limit some foods to protect their kidneys since they can no longer do their job correctly. A special meal plan limited in protein, sodium, potassium, phosphorus and fluid may be prescribed by their doctor. Protein is important to build and repair cells in our bodies. Eating too much protein can cause waste to build up in your blood. Sources of protein are beans (kidney, pinto, navy, etc.), eggs, fish, meat, poultry, and nuts. Too much sodium can raise your blood pressure, cause you to retain extra fluid and put a big strain on your heart. Foods high in sodium include salt, breads, pizza, restaurant foods and processed foods such as cold cuts or soup. Potassium helps keep your muscles and nerves working correctly. Levels of potassium in the blood can rise when your kidneys do not work well. When potassium is not filtered out of the blood it can cause a dangerous condition that affects your heart rhythm. Bananas, oranges, tomatoes,

whole grains, milk and many other foods contain a lot of potassium. Phosphorus keeps your bones and other parts of your body healthy. Damaged kidneys do not remove phosphorus from your blood very well and this can damage your blood vessels, eyes, heart and weaken bones. High phosphorus foods include dark colored soda, beans, whole grains, milk and some dairy foods, meat and nuts. If the phosphorus level in your blood is too high this can decrease the amount of calcium available for your bones. As kidney disease gets worse some people need to limit the amount of fluid they drink. Reading the nutrition facts panel on foods is an important tool to learn more about what nutrients and minerals are in foods you eat. Always talk to your doctor before taking any vitamins or herbal supplements since they may make your kidney disease worse.

Deciding what you should eat when you have kidney disease can be complicated. If you have kidney disease it is important to work with a registered dietitian (RD) that is knowledgeable about meal planning for kidney disease. An RD can simplify meal planning and help you meet your individual needs while considering your food preferences and lifestyle.

sacrament updates

Beginning Pentecost weekend 5/30, we can return to weekend mass at 25% capacity with all attendants wearing masks. Father Ed and I will be closely monitoring the situation to determine when and how we can safely and reverently reschedule the celebration of the sacrament. Please watch the flocknotes, bulletin and website for information.

The current AOD directive is that confirmations are suspended until further notice. Please let me know if there are any extenuating circumstances that may affect the sacrament for the candidate.

The Bishops confer the sacrament of Confirmation, so the Archdiocese will reschedule all of the missed confirmations. Gathering size, state regulations, and Bishop availability will all be determining factors. I will let you know as soon as I hear anything. Please watch the flocknotes, bulletin and website for information.

The Ascension of the Lord

One thing that has brought me joy during this time of confinement is my birdfeeder. I love to watch the finches, nuthatches, cardinals and many I cannot name, take food from the feeder and bring it to a nearby tree or shrub to eat it. Just before a storm the feeder is crowded with birds as they prepare to shelter in their nests. As they huddle together to ride out the storm I can imagine the mama bird telling her chicks, “Stay right here! I will be back with food. Don’t move!” Why? Because the mother cares for her young. It is in her nature to protect and nurture them.

In the same way we are huddled in our homes, waiting out the pandemic storm, doing all we can to keep our families safe, happy and fed. We clean and sanitize surfaces and anything that comes in from outdoors because we want to protect those we love. It is in our nature as loving parents. Like the birds, we must occasionally venture out for food for our families. “Stay here. I will be right back!”

Today we hear the story of Jesus’ “Stay here. I’ll be right back” moment. He has nurtured the faith of His friends for three years. He has suffered, died and risen from the dead. He has appeared to them to show that He has conquered death and has not abandoned them. Now He must ascend to the Father but He will come back. It is in His nature to care for His people. He will come back in Spirit, the Holy Spirit, to guide and be present to His disciples in a way that was not possible before.

In the same way, He cannot and will not abandon us. It is His nature to

watch over us, nurture us and protect us. He knows our hearts, how much we yearn to gather at Mass and receive the Eucharist. He understands our need to gather as a community with family and friends. Let us continue to pour out our hearts to Him who loves us as a parent loves a child. For His Spirit is with always, lovingly guiding and protecting us, even to the end of the age.

May God bless and strengthen your family and keep you well!
