About the Cover – Pictured on the bulletin cover is the sanctuary lamp of St. Patrick’s Church. It burns as an indication of the Lord’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament reserved within the tabernacle. In every Catholic church or chapel, in which the Blessed Sacrament is kept in the tabernacle, a light burns to indicate Christ’s presence. Our sanctuary lamp was a gift of Thomas R. and Charles Brennan in 1910 at the cost of $100.00. Photographs indicate that it was in use until the mid-1950s. After that, its whereabouts remain somewhat of a mystery. One story is that it was given to parishioners to use in their home but were unable to do so. Another parishioner, Joe Londergan, who frequented local auctions kept track of the lamp’s movements. In the 2004 renovations of the church, Fr. Sill, pastor, asked that items from its earlier days might be returned for possible re-use. At that time, the sanctuary lamp came home to find that its chain and counterweight were awaiting its return still in place in the ceiling. After an initial cleaning, the sanctuary lamp was re-hung. A few years ago, Fr. Ghiloni had it re-plated along with some minor repairs. Its value in today’s dollars is significantly more than its purchase price! Over the course of time as an outgrowth of our 2016’s 150th anniversary year, we hope to feature other artistic and devotional works within the church that give us a foretaste of heaven.
Parish Safety Committee – Recently, the diocese held a safety meeting that included recommendations that doors that are not monitored during Mass should be locked. Father Hinterschied has asked ushers to lock the Parish Center doors after the first reading begins. The main doors and side entrance door will remain open. If parishioners are running late, they will need to enter through the main door or side door.
The Red Cross Blood Drive – February 21st drive is at St. Patrick Church from 2:30-7:00 p.m. Sign up at redcrossblood.org, sponsor code Stpat. Donors can also call 1-800-Red Cross. SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 16, 2020
Message from Father Hinterschied
The Church devotes February to the Holy Family and today after each of the Holy Masses, we will honor and rejoice in the gift of the Sacrament of Matrimony. There are four pillars of the Catholic family: fidelity, indissolubility, children, and selfless charity.
Fidelity is the obligation that the husband and wife took before God on their wedding day to remain faithful to each other.
Indissolubility is one truth that parents must teach their children. The Church will survive only where Christ's difficult doctrine on marital indissolubility is believed and practiced.
Children are the fruit of marriage. One of the heaviest sacrifices that childless couples have to make is to accept God's will in their lives and learn the secret of spiritual parenthood. But where the husband and wife can have offspring, their generosity in procreating is the single most effective way of propagating the faith. Catholicism will be lost on deaf ears unless people see couples living what they profess to believe.
Selfless Charity is the Catholic philosophy of life. A father, mother and children are not a mere group of individuals who co-habit with one another. In the mind of Christ, a family is to be a loving community. This implies there is someone in authority who patiently makes decisions and there is mutual trust among its members. They share with one another and are sure that their confidence will not be betrayed.
It implies that the members truly live together. They are in each other's company, not grudgingly but willingly, and together form an unmistakable unity. At Pentecost, St. Luke tells us the first Christians began to form a community beginning with each family. What unified these first families was their common faith. They were united by their common allegiance "to the teachings of the Apostles" (Acts 2:42).
-Rev. Fr. Michael Hinterschied, Pastor, St. Patrick Church
February Sacrament of Marriage Month – St. Patrick is celebrating World Marriage Month. One aspect of our celebration is a photo display in the Parish Hall featuring YOUR wedding photos! We invite all married couples to drop off one framed wedding photo to the parish office. Please put your last name, phone number, and wedding date (including the year) on the front of the photo. After February, your photos can be picked up from the parish office. There will be a blessing of Married Couples on February 15th and 16th after Masses in the Parish Hall. We will have a time to share with one another what has made your marriage joyful! Light refreshments will be served, and breakfast will be served after 7:30 a.m. Mass. The gift of your commitment to each other is a beautiful witness to our parish family!
